Uncovering Explosive Secrets

A killer wants revenge.
A K-9 team stands in his way.

FBI Agent Austin Drake is ambushed at a fall fair moments before a bomb detonates. For Austin, this is no random act—it’s a personal message, especially since the attacks mirror the work of a criminal he put away years ago. Detective Melody Rust and her K-9 partner are on the scene to help, but it quickly becomes clear this is just the beginning of a targeted assault. With a toddler son to protect, Austin must work with Melody to unmask an enemy with a lethal agenda, before everyone becomes collateral damage.

My Review:

A blockbuster, action-packed opening scene sets the tone for this exhilarating read. I enjoyed the fall setting too – the story takes place in October – and it’s always fun to have your fictional friends enjoying the same season you are!

Austin and Melody come together at the crucial time in an exhaustive investigation into a villainous baby selling ring. Only something doesn’t jive at their first explosive meeting and they soon begin to suspect that another criminal has them on his radar which complicates things no end.

The suspense unique to this 7th Colorado K-9 Unit book is full of twists and nail-biting scenarios as well as expertly woven into the series suspense plot which is rapidly coming to a grand finale in book 8 — eep, I can’t wait! As with all the books in this series, ‘Uncovering Explosive Secrets’ can be read as a standalone. Black does an excellent job of bringing new readers up to speed with the nearly year long investigation details without burdening Austin and Melody’s story in any way.

Loved the way their romance developed – hesitant, wary, both with reasons to resist their attraction. I especially appreciated Austin’s personal struggles. The author shines a light on the immense emotional toll fighting crime can take on dedicated law enforcement personnel.

I listened to the audio edition of this book and enjoyed Angie Hickman’s narration. She did a great job balancing the emotion and tension in the story. It’s amazing how much a narrator’s performance plays into creating an atmosphere that matches the author’s storytelling style.

My thanks to Harlequin Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

Cold Case Peril + Giveaway

When someone tries to run dog trainer Micah Landon off the road, Officer Lucy Lopez and her K-9 partner, Piper, show up just in time to make a rescue. Someone wants Micah dead — but why? Is this connected to Lucy’s weapons smuggling case, in which she’s investigating Micah’s younger half brother? Or was Micah attacked because he started looking into the cold case murder of his stepmother? As threats against Micah escalate and secrets are revealed, it’s clear someone will stop at nothing to keep an unsolved murder buried. Can they uncover the truth before it costs them their lives?

My Review:

Woot! Puppies galore! Not only do we have an incredible K-9 centerstage, we also have an eclectic mix of therapy/guide dogs in various stages of training courtesy of our dog trainer hero. Absolute bookish heaven for this dog loving reader.

The tense opening scene starts off a sequence of nail-biting events that leave Micah stymied and Lucy suspicious. Are they case related or something more personal? Love the balance between suspense and slow-burn romance along with a healthy dose of canine shenanigans thrown in.

Once again the Dakota K-9 team pool their resources to sort through fact from fiction. Lucy’s in the lead as she develops a special rapport with Micah but the team always has her back. This is the fourth book in this multi-authored continuity series but reads well as a standalone. The over-arcing suspense plot is beginning to take shape and I’m excited to see where new leads take the team but I also enjoyed getting full resolution to the suspense unique to this book as well as a delightful happily ever after.

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of ‘Cold Case Peril’ narrated by Patrick Zeller. So happy to see more of the Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense lines available in audio format.

My thanks to Harlequin Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio edition of this book.

With the clock ticking, can they identify who’s terrorizing her…before the cold-blooded killer’s long-awaited revenge is complete?

My Review:

Canadian author. Canadian setting. What’s not to love? Always excited to find a story set on my home turf.

Oh my goodness — the tension! Black skillfully builds it up to an explosive conclusion and I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. Perfectly paced, action and danger bookend the romance and it all increased my anxiety!

Love that Darcy and Lucas have a muddled history, it adds a delicious knot of strain to their situation. Gotta love a complicated romance that seems doomed from the start…even though both hero and heroine can’t shake a resurgence of feelings that seem impossible to fulfill. Especially with Darcy being targeted by an unknown assailant. The perfect setup for a stellar romantic suspense.

‘Dangerous Arson Trail’ is the third book in ‘Unsolved Case Files’ series but can easily be read as a standalone novel. I enjoyed meeting up with this cold case team again. The author does a great job of creating a cohesive team of eclectic characters and I’m eager to learn more of their stories as the series progresses.

I listened to the audio edition of this book courtesy of Harlequin Audio and Net Galley and really enjoyed Noni Alley’s narration. She conveyed all the edgy emotion realistically which really helped me connect to the characters and situations they were dealing with. A compulsive non-stop listening experience for me.

Christmas Cold Case + Giveaway

Snowed in with a killer on the loose— and a baby to protect…

K-9 officer Ethan Finnick’s investigation into a cold case disappearance takes a dangerous turn when the missing man’s wife is attacked—and an abandoned baby is found on her property. Now Ethan must team up with Casey Thompson to safeguard the infant from kidnappers and find out the truth about her presumed-dead husband. But as the danger escalates, they realize that a hidden killer lurks in Casey’s small town, ready to protect deadly secrets at any cost…

My Review:

Eeeeeeppp!!! I’m so excited about this series and one of the reasons is that I love cold case stories. So much history and mystery and Maggie K. Black has done a marvellous job with this holiday romantic suspense. She even found a way to make the bad guy festively creepy. Bwahahaha!

Loved the snowed in angle — and double eeeeeepppp — the Canadian setting on Manitoulin Island is refreshingly different. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful part of northern Ontario (google images to catch a glimpse of God’s magnificent handiwork.)

Ethan is heading up a new cold case investigation team and he’s back on the island looking into a decade’s old case surrounding a missing husband, now presumed dead. He and his K-9 cadaver dog did the initial search when they were both young rookies and Ethan is anxious to bring closure to man’s wife.

So, great set up introduced in a gripping white knuckle opening scene and then the twists and turns start piling up. Lots of danger and action and K-9 heroics (even if Nippi, short for Nipissing, is getting a bit white around the muzzle now.)

Black still manages to bring a cozy ambience through the small, close-knit community with plenty of Christmas-y touches that leave a reader in no doubt as to the season. Love, love, love a holiday romantic suspense that delivers the promised yuletide touches. There’s a significant inspirational thread focused on prayer which adds yet another layer to this compulsive read.

I listened to the audible edition, narrated by Patrick Zeller. He really amped up the tension in the action scenes. Amazing what a skilled voice actor can add to an already thrilling story.

My Review:

Eeeep — we’re getting closer to the grande finale of this continuity series! In fact, two of the secondary over-arcing mysteries find resolution in this seventh book so this might not be the place to start in on the series. Though it would read perfectly fine as a standalone — it just contains spoilers for two side mysteries. So, if you don’t intend on playing catch up jumping in here is totally fine.

And — woohoo – we have a forced proximity romance between a hero and heroine going undercover as a married couple! Definitely one of my favourite tropes because it provides all kinds of relationship building opportunities. So we get some fun banter mixed in with poignant moments as both Asher and Peyton wrestle with some personal stuff. Plus we have a spiffy springer spaniel K-9 officer and some ornery villains to catch — and all of that makes this one riveting read.

Well, listen for me, since this is another Love Inspired Suspense novel I was thrilled to find in audio format! I enjoyed Abby Craden’s narration and hoping for more Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense novels to be made available in this format.
