Anchor Cove + Giveaway

A lonely single mom
Simone Avery has been doing life on her own for the past sixteen years. The last thing she needs is to fall for her next-door neighbor who’s only in town for the summer. Love’s not in the cards for her. It wasn’t in the past, not now, and not in the future. She’s easily forgettable.

A man looking for his next steps
Derrick Benjamin just retired from the United States Air Force at God’s bidding and has no clue what’s next. The last thing he expected to find on his summer vacation is a woman he can’t forget and a town that makes him want more from life.

God’s plan in the works
Will Derrick and Simone find an ever after that lasts beyond the summer? Or will heartache anchor their futures?

My Review:

This is the summer read that got away from me this year. I’m blaming it on my move. But I couldn’t wait a whole year before reading a new release from Toni Shiloh so I got to bask in the sunshiny summer weather in Anchor Cove on a cold and stormy autumn afternoon. Made for a lovely escape read.

Derrick is fresh out of a twenty year stint in the army and trying to figure out what’s next. I really appreciated this perspective and his honest struggle to find his footing as a civilian. Shiloh explores the difficult transition with compassion and even humour as well as a healthy dose of faith. Love the way Derrick seeks God in his plans. Also love that he spends a lot of time wrestling with God’s silence but he never gives up. And oh my, are there some inspirational gems to be found in this novel.

“He never stays silent. Sometimes His silence is a way to get our attention to make sure that when He speaks – because He will – that we’re ready to listen.” (p 58)

So Derrick moves into a a beach house right next door to Simone and her fifteen year old son and, well the sparks don’t immediately fly, but they do simmer as he gets to know his feisty neighbour. Loved the tenderness in their romance, the insecurities and wariness as well as the yearning. And the humour! Shiloh delivers a heartwarming inspirational romance that left me in a happy bibliophile swoon by the last page.

  1. I’m ready for something beside suspense reading. Seems like lately all the books I’m picking up and yes I’ve become a title and cover of a book type reader. Ever since I got my first e-reader. So I’d love to pick this one up and read it now.

    1. I’ve been on a real suspense kick too so this made for a lovely change of pace. And sometimes a reader just has to snuggle up with a book ‘book’ — they smell so much better than ereaders! 🙂 Good luck, Becky!

      1. I can’t get out much yet bc still suffering terrible post shingles nerve pain in the spot where it took shingles blisters 4-5 mths to close up, but I told my sis long distance I seldom get bored. How can you get bored taking trips all over the country and the entire world?! 😉

      2. Ugh to the nerve pain lasting so long! Such a nasty side effect. You’re reminding me to check with my doctor to see if the shingles vaccine I got is good forever or needs to be updated every so often. I’m thinking it’s a one and done deal (well, two jabs a few months apart) but I’m definitely going to confirm that! So sorry you are still feeling that pain.

      3. Thanks Kav! I’ve really suffered with this nerve pain but thank God for books to distract us & His Word to give us hope. I wish I’d have gotten the vaccine but my dr never said anything about it. I assumed I would never get them. So much for assuming. You’re good on your vaccines, you don’t need to get any more. After all this time Spring through Fall I’m an expert on shingles by now. Ugh!

  2. I’ve recently discovered Toni’s writing and really enjoy her books, especially the refreshing faith thread she includes. This one sounds just as good! Count me in 😉

  3. Love Toni’s books and ANCHOR COVE definitely sounds like another one I will thoroughly enjoy reading. Plus, as an old Army brat, I have a fondness for people in uniform, present and past. Absolutely LOVE the quote! Can’t wait for the opportunity to dive into Derrick and Simone’s story.

Thank you so much for the chance to win a copy!

  4. I’m way behind on Toni’s books (along with a bunch of my other favorite authors)! Thanks for the review and chance to win a copy!

      1. She always seems to always have book contracts (or even a few), so I guess I didn’t realize that she did much in the indie world. That shows a lot of versatility on her part. I do love her work and am always hoping for another princess novel!

      2. I was thinking about this and I realized there was lots of hype in the summer about her upcoming Christmas novella that released September 1 – that is traditionally published so this indie got lost in the wake of that, I guess. Toni Shiloh started out as an indie author and broke into traditional publishing with her princess series so I guess now she’s doing both?

      3. I had no idea that Toni Shiloh started out as an indie author, as I made the move to CF in 2017 (probably a year or two before the princess novels). We learn stuff here! I think they call it hybrid. I believe I know of a couple of authors that do that: Joanna Davidson Politano and maybe Tara Johnson. I’m sure there are more than I realize. My library typically will not order an indie book, so that’s always a clue for me.

      4. Hybrid author — yes, that’s the term. And there are a lot of them now. Gabrielle Meyer comes to mind and Jody Hedlund and Elizabeth Camden…they get the best of both worlds. My library has been the same way about indie books but they just ordered all of Gabrielle Meyer’s indie books which totally surprised me. Her Timeless series has been so popular I guess they are now buying everything she publishes. Oh – Jody Hedlund too. They have ordered in her indie cowboy series.

      5. More than I thought! My library rarely purchases those, but they did get a couple of Gabrielle’s indies and some of her LIS titles. Of course the Timeless series too (except maybe the last one). Love that series but I’m behind on it!
