National Little Free Library Day! + Giveaway

Did you know that May 17th is National Little Free Library Day? I just found out and knew this would make a great Conversations With Kav topic…especially since it falls on the actual day. Woohoo, how fun is that?!

I made a collage of Little Free Libraries in my area – these images were captured from the official Little Free Library website. They have a map of all the registered Little Free Libraries so you can check out if there are any in your area. According to their stats there are LFLs in all 50 states plus 120 countries and over 300 million books have been shared worldwide! How cool is that? (Plus there are loads more that aren’t registered – 3 are in my immediate neighbourhood – so that means even more books shared!)

Important sidenote: the Little Free Library in the bottom left hand corner of the collage is at a church I’ll likely attend after I move. Eeeeepppp, they look like my kind of people!

Here’s a little blurb from the official website that explains the concept of Little Free Libraries:

“Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Our mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book-exchange boxes.

Our vision is a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader. We believe all people are empowered when the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read is not limited by time, space, or privilege.

Sounds like it was originally organized for the benefit of young readers but I know all the Little Free Libraries in my area do a rip-roaring adult business as well. I’ve donated some of my gently read books and I’m always tickled to find them gone when I check in at the Little Free Library days later. My subtle way of getting Christian Fiction out into the world one book at a time 🙂

So, I have questions (of course I do!) Are you a regular Little Free Library visitor? Or, eeeeppp, are you a steward of your very own Little Free Library?

And here’s the all important GIVEAWAY question:

What is the title of a book (Christian Fiction/ Closed Door) you would love to spy in a Little Free Library you frequent? The kind of book that would turn you giddy and set you to happy dancing in the street out of sheer bibliophile glee?! Share the title and author in a comment and if your name is drawn, that is the book you will win. Best Reads will become a virtual Little Free Library for the day! Awesomesauce!

Draw will be held and winner announced on Saturday May 23 2026.

  1. Another fun conversation post! I have a Little Free Library just down the street from where I live, although my mom and I have toyed with the idea of starting one, too. I like jamming what I can in there (it gets pretty full, by times), and some people have also started putting other goodies inside. Last time I did a drop off, I scored a little bag with smore themed sticky notes, a smore themed pen, and a little silicon mushroom.

Totally agree with you about the desire to slide some Christian books in!

For the giveaway question (and what a neat question it is), I’m going with The Disappearing Seat, book two in the fantastic Elita Brown series! I actually reviewed this title and had a copy but, sadly, don’t know where it got off to. I hope you have the chance to read this excellent middle grade series some time, Kav!

    1. I have a Little Free Library just a couple of houses down from me. It became super popular during COVID and has had a dedicated following since then. so much fun to watch the books come and go and to see the variety of books on offer. The Elite Brown series sounds interesting and I love the covers. Good luck, Stephanie!

  2. There is one right down the street from family members in a very “liberal” neighborhood. But I have found Christian fiction books in it! So I know there’s a fellow Christian reader somewhere around. I asked my husband if we could put one up in our yard and he said no because he doesn’t want any creeps in our yard. I told him to consider the type of people interested haha. I just finished reading CrossBones by C.C. Warrens which released yesterday on kindle unlimited. It was so good, but I would love to find it in print so my Holly paperback collection is complete. I think I need to remember to donate some of my books next time I’m in the area. Have a good Sunday!

    1. I totally agree with you. Little Free Libraries invite the bestest of humanity – readers! 🙂 We only get creepy if we are denied reading material. Bwahahahaha! You must complete your Holly paperback collection for sure. Good luck, Rebecca. I’m gearing up the nerve to dive into Imperfect Justice – I so want to be done with Collin! Good luck, Rebecca!

  3. I wait till I have a small stack of books than visit the little free libraries in my neighborhood. Also happy too when the adult books are gone. I have put a few newer children books in them too and happy to see them gone as well.

  4. I love the Little Free Libraries! I have one right outside my YMCA door I go by 3 times a week on my way in for water exercise. I’ve enjoyed getting books there and have left dozens of CF books when I do my annual shelf cleanout. I feel by leaving books there I’m doing my own small part to promote Christian fiction, and we never know how a book will impact a life. The same way it does any of us.

A book I would love to find in my LFL would be To Kiss a Knight that came out last year. The cover just drew me in, and I’ve had it on my “maybe I’ll get to it someday” list ever since. I’ve also never read anything by Grace Hitchcock so that’s a plus to add to the new and undiscovered author goal list I make every year.

Have a great Sunday everyone, and Kav I hope all is going well in the moving prep category. Every time I think about it for myself, I think you are so brave and adventurous! Thanks for the giveaway! tracey14567 atgmail.com

    1. Gah, my comment got eaten. 😦 As I was saying…I love the location of your LFL — must be well used for sure. Wouldn’t it be neat if more community spaces put them up? And it’s so much fun to share our love of CF this way, isn’t it?

To Kiss a Knight sounds really good. I mean, who can resist a Regency fake relationship trope? I haven’t read anything by Grace Hitchcock either. I have heard of her, of course, but, wow, does she ever have a lot of books published. I don’t know how I haven’t picked one up yet! Good luck, Tracey!

PS: moving is going really well. I’m pacing myself and getting a lot down, ticking things off on my mile long to-do list. I’ve even boxed up almost all my books – just have half a shelf to go. Not telling you how many boxes of books will be moving with me or where I’m going to put them when we get there. 🙂 That’s a problem for another day.

  5. I don’t have any little free libraries that I pass on a regular basis. I do have an acquaintance who put one in her front yard a couple years back. When I was clearing my shelves, not long after that I took her some CF to add to it. I have not been by it recently to see if she’s kept up with it, or what is in it now.

Being South Carolina I would love to see South of Somewhere by T. I. Lowe in it!

    1. I just picked up South of Somewhere from the library yesterday. Not sure if I’ll manage to read it before I move though. Such a conundrum when your hold comes in at an inopportune time. 🙂 Good luck, Patty!

  6. Good morning, Kav! I’ve never seen any little free libraries in SC, so I looked it up. We have one in our town & judging by the looks of the house in the background it can’t be too far away. I’d love to find it & drop off some of mine! When I get all better from that nasty “S” word. I can’t even bear to say it any more.

Anyway, thanks for bringing our attention to the LFL or I wouldn’t have known about the one close by. Hope moving day is going more smoothly, but does it ever? Bless your heart! I hope to never move again!!

A book I’d love to see in my LFL is a women’s fiction from an author I’ve enjoyed which releases Tues:

The Deep End of Love by Christina Suzann Nelson

    1. Ugh to the condition that shall not be named! I’m sorry you are having such a rough go of it! I hope you do get to go on a Little Free Library hunt in your town. There are lots that aren’t registered as well, so there are likely more in your area than you think there are. The three within walking distance of me aren’t listed on the website.

My moving prep is going well…it’s scary how organized I am…but scarier too when I think of one more thing that I need to do before moving. Address change notifications seem daunting, trying to remember them all.

The Deep End of Love sounds like a great women’s fiction selection. I’ve read a couple of Christina Suzann Nelson’s books and they are amazing! Good luck, Diane!

      1. The ‘S’ from Hades. Some are in a sensitive 7″ area & taking time to heal. The rest have healed so nicely so why does the 7″ area consume me, my sleep, everything! Ugh. Anyway, hubby said he’d search some free libraries in our area. He works in other ppl’s homes every day. I’d love to donate some of my books.

I forgot about change of address since I haven’t had to do that in 23 yrs. Yikes! You’re so organized, though, you’ll do fine.

      2. Grrr to the dreaded ‘S’. Weird how one area just didn’t heal up. That’s not playing fair! Love that you’re sending your hubby on a Little Free Library hunt! That’s true love, right there. 🙂

  8. I didn’t actually realize what these little boxes were! I’ve seen them pop up around my area, but have never gotten a close up look, I only see them as we drive by. I looked them up online for my area to see some of them. My favorite I came across was one that had an actual chicken coop underneath! 😂There is another in a nearby town known for its marble that is either painted to look like marble or is made of marble. Clever! 😄

As far as the giveaway goes, I would say The Letter by Edwina Kiernan

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Eeeeppp, you’re going to have to due a Little Free Library tour and check them out in person. Some folks have really gotten creative with their concepts. In England they have a few in disused telephone booths — you know, those iconic red ones? They are outfitted with shelves and perfect for keeping the books out of the rain. The Letter sounds awesome — new to me author too, so that’s a bonus. Good luck, Bridget.

  9. When I lived in ND they had several little free libraries all over town

Here in my new town where we moved last fall after we bought our house, I found they don’t have any. I have considered starting one myself. We are less than a block away from a church and the school so I’m sure it would be well used! Just haven’t gotten around to building it. Not sure I trust our carpentry skills😂 my hubby is more a mechanic than good with wood.

Id jump and dance with great glee if I could find The Lost Story of Via Belle by Melanie Dobson!! I’m so sad that my library doesn’t have this book yet and so I haven’t read it yet. Thanks Kav!

I think I emailed you about my win yesterday. Lol I was so busy though I can’t remember if I sent it😅

    1. I always wanted to make a LFL too, but I have no carpentry skills at all. Plus, you have to make sure they are sturdy and the post is secure ’cause you don’t want to have your LFL topple over onto some unsuspecting reader! lol They do sell actual LFLs on their website…didn’t check their prices though, but that’s definitely an option for those of us who aren’t builders. The Lost Story of Via Belle is high on my list as well. Good luck, Sarah! And, yes, I got your email yesterday. I’ll get your book in the post early this week.

  10. Witness Protection by Robert Whitlow in E form is the book I would love to read. Thanks, Kav. jacsmi75 at gmail dot com

I have not seen any free libraries close to me in Alabama. However, in my community apartments, we have a small library which operates on donated books, and my daughter has given over 30 free books. The tenants love them as well as some patients in the next door nursing home. Best Readers alert….I will be happy to give you my addy and place any donations you have in the library. Thanks!!!

  11. We have a number of Little Free Libraries around town, including one in the entryway of the grocery store! And there’s one just a little over a block away from my house that I frequently walk by in the mornings (though the books in it have rarely been anything I’m interested in). I’d love to find The Bell Tolls at Traeger Hall by Jaime Jo Wright in one of them!

    1. A grocery store is another great community space for a LFL! And that nudged my memory – we have a bank that has a version of LFL — a kind of take a book, donate a book – table inside the lobby of each of it’s branches. They’ve been doing that for years. Traeger Hall is awesomesauce, great choice, Rachael. Good luck!

  13. I WAS a free little library steward until we moved from NC to Ohio 3 years ago. I have not been able to convince my husband that I need to do it again! However, I am an avid user, and like you, I am always donating gently used Christian Fiction books to free libraries near me. A book I would love to see in a little free library is Head over Wheels by B.R. Goodwin, with a marriage of convenience trope…need I say more, LOL?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ooohhh, you’re reminding me that I need to read more B.R. Goodwin books. I’ve only read one but I loved it! And yay, you’re the first person I know who has been a steward. How cool is that?! Too bad you couldn’t move the wee little library with you to Ohio! Good luck, Cindy!

    1. Yes, wouldn’t it be great if every church had a Little Free Library? Think of the books we could share and a great community service too. It’s such a brilliant concept, I’m thrilled that it has caught on world wide. Just imagine that little group of people in Minnesota starting there’s up without any concept of how quickly the idea would spread? They must be thrilled to pieces! Good luck, Cheryl!

  17. We are a very small town – less than 2400 and we are the county seat, but we do have a little free library located on the courthouse square. It is the busiest April – November when we have a great influx of people to town. We are a tourist town and during those months there is a festival or event about every 3-4 weeks. It’s not very active during the off months, but a few of us try to keep something in it.

I would be beyond thrilled to find a copy of SCENT OF HOPE by Susan May Warren in our free library or any other one I was to come across!

Have a sensational Sunday evening and an amazing upcoming week! We are praying the forecast of rain mid-week holds true. Corn has been side dressed and in need of water as well as the rest of the garden areas, the grass and the critters. We all need some moisture!

  19. Yes! My family and I LOVE visiting the little free libraries in our area!😁 We always stop to take a peek inside when we come across one. We had a fun “little library day” with the daycare kids one summer where we loaded up kids and books into the van and made a day out of driving to as many as we could locate and swapping books. All of the kids had a blast and, after lunch at the park, were able to go home that evening with new books😉

  20. We do have little free libraries around the city (not sure they’re registered as LFL’s or not).  I’ve never seen any CF in a LFL, but I also wish there were some within walking distance.  I feel strange driving up to these, but I have done so to help a neighbor clean out her fantasy shelf (not my genre & not CF).  The idea of a church LFL is awesome!

I’d love to see A Fierce Devotion by Laura Frantz in a LFL (her indie that the library won’t purchase).

LOL There is one that looks like a LFL near my sister’s house, but it’s for puzzles–a nice twist for those who enjoy puzzles. I’d love to find a copy of A Chance for Kallie Mae by Ann H. Gabhart.
