At Love’s Bidding + Giveaway

She sells priceless antiques. He sells livestock by the pound.

Is he really the man to make a bid for her heart?

After helping her grandfather at their Boston auction house, Miranda Wimplegate discovers she’s accidentally sold a powerful family’s prized portrait to an anonymous bidder. Desperate to appease the people who could ruin them forever, they track it to the Missouri Ozarks and makes an outlandish offer to buy the local auction house and all its holdings before the painting can move again.

Upon crossing the country, however, Miranda and her grandfather discover their new auction house doesn’t deal in fine antiques, but in livestock. And its frustratingly handsome manager, Wyatt Ballentine, is frustrated to discover his fussy new bosses don’t know a thing about the business he’s single-handedly kept afloat. Faced with more heads of cattle than they can count—but no mysterious painting—Miranda and Wyatt form an unlikely but charged partnership to try and prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

My Review:

published in 2015

Sweet swoony lighthearted bliss. Love all the exacting details in a Jennings novel right down to the clever title tie-ins and this one is brilliant. What starts out as a comedy of errors turns into a intriguing tale of subterfuge. An Ozark Mountain town full of quirky characters provides a lively backdrop to romance and mayhem as Miranda and Wyatt try to navigate their attraction to each other and the mystery dogging their heels.

And while I’d categorize At Love’s Bidding as a romantic comedy there are still some deep and thought-provoking story threads that make the read all the richer. One of those has to do with Miranda’s grandfather. He is in the early stages of what we now know as Alzheimer’s and watching Miranda struggle to come to grips with the change in her beloved grandpa made my heart ache. Jennings does an incredibly good job of portraying the honest emotions of this kind of family turmoil.

A delightful mix of comedy and drama make for a satisfying reading escape.

  1. This sounds a little bit like Jen Turano, but the author is new to me. It sounds good and my library has it, so no entry for me. Thank you for the review!

  2. You had me at Ozark Mountains, since that’s where we live. Then I kept reading and AT LOVE’S BIDDING grabbed me and said READ ME. Sound like it would be an awesome read with lots of details of things I love in a story.

Thank you so much for wonderful chance to win a copy!

We had to travel to the state north of us to visit hubby’s sister in order to see some of that moisture stuff called rain. Thankfully we dodged the bad stuff and the tornado that hit 30 miles from her home. Short stay and going back home tomorrow before the next round hits her. Hoping to drag some moisture (minus the bad stuff) down our way. Found a very nice nursey up here, which means we’ll be taking some plants home becasue we finally found the purple peony we’ve been wanting. Never have too many flowers! It’s always fun to switch out books with sis too. Hope your Thursday brings you all you with it to.

    1. Always fun to find a book with a familiar setting. Wonderful that you got to visit with your sister-in-law but scary that you were that close to tornadoes! I can’t even imagine! Love that you picked up some new plants, I totally can’t resist a well stocked nursery or plant shop – just like books, there can never be enough! We’ve had five days straight rain and more to come. I’m just happy it’s not snow! Good luck, Kay!

    1. It has been awhile since she released a book, hasn’t it? Looks like the last book she published was in 2022, Engaging Deception, the third Joplin Chronicles book. At least, that’s according to her website. Happy Reading, Pam!

  4. I’ve read a few of Regina Jennings’ books, but this is one I’ve missed. It looks like a fun one! I was on her launch team for some of her later ones.

  5. I loved this series my book twin. Shall we rope some livestock? I haven’t read anything by her for a long time. Is she still writing?

    1. I haven’t seen anything from the last few years so I’m not sure. Don’t think I’d be any good at roping livestock but I wouldn’t say no to some sashaying in a square dance. Happy book twin dancing!

  6. Thanks for this reminder of Regina’s writing. I read The Joplin Chronicles but it looks like she hasn’t written anything since then. Your review convinced me to go back to her older books. Thanks for sharing.
