Exiled from his beloved Acadie in Canada, Bleu Galant has little on his mind but survival as the tumultuous French and Indian War comes to a close. When his journey to Virginia’s Rivanna River settlement takes an unexpected turn, he crosses paths with Brielle Farrow–a woman whose presence stirs something in him he cannot explain nor express. Unable to forget her, his decision to help her takes them across an ocean into a lavish world he’s never known. Will their intricate tie decide not only her fate but his future?
My Review:
Laura Frantz’s storytelling has the power to lure me in even if the novel is set an era I don’t have a huge interest in. And I always come away richer for the read. As well as educated. If only we had been able to learn our high school history through incredible historical fiction like this one! Because, not only do we get an accurate accounting of time and place and customs, Frantz also delivers emotional authenticity to the era through her characters.
And oh la la, this romance is exquisitely slow burn with lots of luscious layers for a reader to lose herself in. Fainting couch and smelling salts recommended. Bleu is so….stalwart. Steadfast. Deliberate. Worlds away from Brielle’s background and life experience. Their love develops slowly in the midst of heartache and struggles. Fierce devotion indeed! What an apt title!
An absorbing novella, rich in history and characterization, this is an easy read to lose yourself in. Definitely in the ‘unputdownable’ and ‘keeper shelf’ categories!

First off, don’t you just love that cover! That alone would have me picking up this book for a second look. However, once you see who the author is, there’s no reason for a second look cause you know it’s going to be a fabulous read.
Oh, how I agree with you on what a way to teach history – through books that are fun to read. As my Granny use to say “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” (Honestly no cats ever harmed – just a southern expression.) I know I would have learned more easier this way too.
A FIERCE DEVOTION is on my TBR list and I can’t wait to read Bleu and Brielle’s amazing story. Don’t worry all supplies on hand for what I know is bound to be a read it all at once, emotion read. Thank you so much for the amazing chance to win a copy!

The cover definitely invites a reader in. I do wish history teachers would clue in to the power of historical fiction (well researched, of course.) Or, wouldn’t it be neat if a history teacher and an English teacher teamed up so that the students were reading a fiction book set in the historical time they were studying? Good luck, Kay!

You put my thoughts on learning history through fiction so eloquently! Of course we had it in school, but I was terrible at the class. I would have learned so much easier if it was in fiction form. 😊
Laura Frantz is one of those authors you automatically know you will enjoy a book by! I agree with you on it not being a favorite time period (it’s not mine either), but it makes a huge difference on who the writer is. Lovely review Kav!

Thans, Trixi! I was interested in history as a kid but largely from the novels I read and those timelines didn’t often coincide with what was in my history lessons and our texts were dreadfully boring in my opinion! 🙂 Good luck, Trixi!

I definitely want to read this! You really can’t go wring with Laura Frantz. I’ve been waiting for this to go on sale because the only copy at the library is Hoopla. Hoopla is not compatible with my Kindle.

You will love it. Didn’t realize hoopla isn’t compatible with Kindle…that kinda doesn’t make sense. I wonder what they think you’ll read your book on if not an ereader? Good luck, Perrianne!

I think it’s just the Paperwhite, but I didn’t know that when I bought it.

You saying that last week or so propelled this to the top of my TBR. It arrived early for some strange reason and I was going to wait but then….well, happy sighing endings shouldn’t be put off, right? Happy Reading, Tracey!

Laura Frantz’s books are always “must buys” for me. The cover of A Fierce Devotion is quite lovely and that loveliness continues with the story. I was so glad Bleu’s story continued in this book since he was an intriguing character in The Seamstress of Acadie. I so agree with you, Kav, about if only we could have learned high school history with the help of well-researched, beautifully written novels such as A Fierce Devotion. I only developed an interest in history when I started reading historical fiction. You don’t need to add me to your giveaway since I have a copy already.
