Conversations With Kav – a few catch-ups and the End of the Year Book Tag + Giveaway

First the Catch Up:

Just a reminder that we are closing in on the last day to get Bingo entries in. The closing date is Thursday November 27 – American Thanksgiving (sorry, I said Friday in previous posts but your Thanksgiving is always Thursday, for some strange reason. Can someone explain why? It would make more sense to have it on the Friday so you’d get a long weekend.)

We already have 8 Bingo Blackouts and lots more that are pretty close so woohoo, lots of great reading this autumn! And I’m getting lots of great books to add to my TBR because it clearly wasn’t long enough before! 🙂

Remember that interesting discussion we had about AI and the publishing industry a few months ago? Well, I’ve recently noticed a new disclaimer being added at the end of my audio books now. It says something to the effect of: “No part of this audio book may be used or reproduced for training artificial intelligence technologies or systems.” And I’ve also heard the phrase ‘text data-mining’ which I think refers to using an author’s work to train a AI to write books! Ack! This whole topic gets my dander up and I’m inwardly fuming that publishers need to add this kind of disclaimer at the end of any creative work. It should be obvious – don’t steal anyone’s intellectual property! Gah! But I guess these disclaimers make it easier to pursue legal action if necessary.

Price of ebooks: I was listening to an author chat (cozy mystery) about a month ago. Apparently bestseller lists are only compiled from sales of physical books in brick and mortar stores. So the theory is that publishers match the ebook price to the paperback price for the first few weeks in order to encourage people to buy the print book so that sale can be counted for the bestseller lists. They were talking about how that criteria needs to change and that ebook sales should also be counted but that’s not happening yet. I’d say audiobooks should be counted as well. A sale is a sale no matter the format, right? Anyway, that explains why the ebook price will go down after a couple of weeks to where it should be.

End of the Year Book Tag

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

This is the book I am reading with a church non-fiction group. We cover a chapter every two weeks so I’m not sure if I’ll finish by the end of the year. But this is the only book unfinished at this time from my TBR. I choose a book, read it all the way through or DNF it and move on. No fictional malingering for me!

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

This is the second book in the Hometown Hardware Mystery series which has an autumn setting. I keep pushing it aside for Christmas reads but I really need to read this one because the author has just released #3 which is a Christmas book!

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Eeeeppp!!! I have this one on preorder and I’m anxiously awaiting the call from the bookstore to say it’s finally arrived! Just a couple of weeks to go.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Argh! I have way more than three but here we go…these ones are on my TBR right now:

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become a favourite of the year?

This one grabbed my attention the second Cindy mentioned it on our Hello November day. Thankfully it came out in paperback closer to the release date and I might have ordered it right away. The tagline is: “Blizzard Outside. Banter Inside. Sparks Inevitable.” Blizzard. City girl with a pampered pet in force proximity with a brooding cowboy. I have high hopes for this one!

Now it’s your turn. Feel like answering one or more of these questions? If so, share in a comment, along with the title and author, of one of the Christian Fiction books you would like to end the year with (that you don’t already have.) If your name is drawn, that is the book you will win! Easy Peasy!

Draw will be held and winner announced on Saturday November 15 2025

  1. Hi Kav,

please send me an email so I can send those Bingo entries. You know, because my email program won’t take your Canada email address. Thanks!

  2. While I have way more than three books I want to read before the end of the year, I’ll only list the four that are sitting on my desk now waiting to be read ASAP.

UNDERCOVER IN AMISH COUNTRY by Lenora Worth – always very much enjoy this author’s books.

AN UNEXPECTED TEXAS REUNION by Heidi main – also love this author’s books AND it’s a K-9 story.  Need I say more!

DETECTING DEADLY THREATS by Carol J. Post – again K-9 and a search and rescue to boot!

SCENT OF SABOTAGE by Dana Mentink – fabulous author whose books are a must read for me.  While it may not say the wording K-9 on the cover, there is a bloodhouse in a working vest on the cover.

May our TBR list always continue to grow and be more than the book we have in hand. 😊

High on my list of wanting to read is the book THE CHRISTMAS RING by Karen Kingsbury.  While it’s already been released, it still remains on my TBR and sits there with my great desire to read.  I just feel in my bones that it may just be that favorite book of the year.

Thank you for the chance to win a copy of a book we desire to read, which for me is THE CHRISTMAS RING!

  3. That’s so interesting about the price of ebooks and how they keep the price up to encourage paperback sales. I have however noticed a lot of the books retailing at 18.99 are dropping to 12.99 before release date now, like they used to do. Case in point, Hearts in Circulation, Belle of Chatham L Frantz, Taming Lady Temperance K Witmeyer and just this morning Last to Fall L Blackburn. Also interesting these are all Revell and Bethany books, so maybe they see if they want preorder sales they have to come down. I have preordered all four to let the publishers know that I will preorder at 30% off but not full retail. I assume someone collects that data somewhere along the line.

Three books I want to read before the end of the year are Heart’s in Circulation, which I will be jumping on as soon as it comes out on Tuesday. The second book is The Royal Artisan which I have been holding onto until just the right changeup from contemp. to historical. The third is Beyond the Clouds by Elizabeth Camden I have for Net Galley review, also waiting for the right moment. I am such a mood reader!

Just a sidenote: I’ve read the first 2 stories in Something Borrowed I won here and can see why all three were up for the Christy Award for short story. Both were so good, but S Finkbeiner’s story, A Daffodil in the Dress won and I look forward to reading that this afternoon. Great collection!

I have been flying through Christmas books on KU. I even bought a Lacy Williams collection with 11 Christmas stories in it for .99, Christmas with the Cowboy Next Door. I plan to leisurely work my way through that in Dec. after getting all the “stuff” done. I may not make it all the way through, 1278 pages total! I do like reading the shorter novellas when time is at a premium. At roughly 116 pages per book that’s an easy read per day 🙂

A book I’d like to read in December is The Bridge by Shanna Hatfield. It’s a new release Christmas book but also listed as a mystery/suspense. “On a bridge suspended above the Willamette river, five lives collide…” I want to know whar happens!

Thanks for the fun, as always, I love Convos with Kav! tracey14567 atgmaildotcom

    1. That’s interesting about the Bethany House / Revell ebook prices going down earlier. I’m wondering if that’s because they offer those discounts (30-40% off) for print preorders plus free shipping on their website – Baker Book House? Doesn’t make sense to offer the discount on one edition and not another.

I’m still gobsmacked over Hearts in Circulation. I don’t have words and I need to have a review up by tomorrow! Ack! Something Borrowed is such a great collection. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an entire novella collection make Christy finalists before!

Love that you are getting into the Christmas reading mood too. I might be going overboard with the Christmas reading right now. 🙂 The Bridge does sound intriguing. Good luck, Tracey!

  6. Good morning, Kav! I’ve noticed some of Thomas Nelson ebooks have come down on release day. Prowl is $9.99 & Denise Hunter’s new ebooks have been as low as $7.99 – $8.99. I agree a sale is a sale and audiobooks should be included as well.

I need to get started on Julie Klassen’s new book, Whispers at Painswick Court bc it releases Dec 2. For some reason I thought it came out around Christmas. I do have the pprbk, but requested it on NetGalley as well bc our lighting isn’t great at night. Especially now that it gets dark at 5:30! IDK if Bethany House will approve it tho. Also want to read Enigma by Christy Barritt by the end of the yr & need to finish up Meet Me at the Christmas Cottage by Christen Krumm. It’s SO good & everything Christmassy!

A book I’d love to read before the year is up is: The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter bc she has a new one releasing in the Spring! Thanks for the opportunity to win it!

    1. Interesting — I wonder if enough people started questioning the authors and publishers about the ebook costs? That’s great news. One of the rotten(ish) things cozy mystery publishers are doing is cutting out the mass market paperback editions and only publishing trade paperback and hardcover editions which is a huge jump in cost for print readers. Not quite sure why that is…you think they would sell more books at the mass market paperback costs so that would improve their chance of hitting the bestseller lists. Personally, I do like the size of the trade paperback (same as our Christian Fiction) but it’s literally twice the price. The authors are worried about reduced sales. They still publish them in ebook, of course, but that doesn’t help me. However, the odd thing I’ve noticed lately is that the price of audible books are coming down. Often lower than the price of the print which boggles my mind. Who can figure out all the shifting logistics of the publishing industry?!

Ack! If I don’t quickly catch up with Julie Klassen I’ll be three books behind by the beginning of December! Love your reading line up — Meet me at the Christmas Cottage does sound (and looks) really good! Sigh, so many books, so little time! Good luck, Diane!

      1. I’m sure there’s been plenty of buzz about the prices of books & surely the publishing companies have gotten wind of it! Especially when they see their sales going down because of it. Wow! That stinks about the mass market paperbacks! They’ve been around forever. All these changes definitely boggles the mind.

Now thanks to you I just added Hearts in Circulation to my TBR. LOL! Like I really needed another one on there! It’s gotta be an incurable disease! Bibliophritis or TBRitis . . . something to that effect! 🙄

  7. Good Morning! I somehow keep adding more books to my TBR list and that list just gets longer and longer. Three recently published books I’m planning to read before year end are Love in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell, on the Edge of Trust by Patricia Bradley, and my PICK for the giveaway, Hearts in Circulation. Also reading a number of Christmas books! Thanks. Sandyavery at comcast dot net

    1. Bwahahaha! Funny how our TBRs keep growing when we aren’t looking! 🙂 I’m eager to read Love in the Castle Library too but it doesn’t release in audio until January! Sob! But I listened to the first one and I like to read series in the same format…strange of me, but,,,,And now you’ve gone and made me add Edge of Trust to my audible cart – snicker, yes, I’m blaming you and not my impulse book buying tendency. Hearts in Circulation is exceptionally, incredibly, impossible to describe fantabulous! Everyone should read it before the end of the year! Good luck, Sandy!

  8. A book releasing very early December which I am looking forward to is Julie Klassen’s Whispers at Painswick Court. I have several new books I have purchased recently which will be upcoming reads – a mix of Regency and western historical fiction. I am not sure in years past if publishers offer more sales during Black Friday week. Any thoughts? Also, I had no idea only print books counted for the bestseller lists!

    1. It’s been ages since I’ve read western historical fiction and I know Mary Connealy has a new series I haven’t dived into yet. hmmm…ohhh, just checked and my library has them. Thanks for the inspiration, CC, even though my TBR pile is rather excessive at the moment. 🙂 I’m not sure about publishers offering Black Friday sales but vendors and bookstores do. Christianbook does — they’re very good about sales. I just have to figure out if it’s worth the shipping to Canada. And, Of course, Baker Book House is great about preorder and new release sale prices all year round. I’m still digging around for more info on the bookseller lists. The concept started way back before ebooks and online stores so it was a nationwide marketing strategy for independent booksellers and, I guess, now, it’s a way to stand up to the big online stores like Amazon. Amazon, of course, has it’s own bestseller lists that do figure in ebook sales as well. It’s all so confusing. Anyway, Whispers at Painswick Court makes a nice end of the year read. I think I might make that one my Jolabokaflod read this year! Good luck, CC!

  9. Three books that I want to read before the end of the year: The Bell Tolls at Traeger Hall by Jaime Jo Wright, Whispers at Painswick Court by Julie Klassen, and a new one I just heard about: Those Who Trespass by Sydney F Grey, an Indie romantic suspense about a Regency-era sea captain who finds a woman abandoned on a tropical island.

Those Who Trespass would be my pick–I’m really intrigued by the premise (and the gorgeous cover doesn’t hurt). Thanks for the giveaway!

  10. I had no idea ebook sales weren’t counted toward the bestseller lists! It seems they should be. Although I suspect some books get a lot of downloads only when they are on sale for free, so I could see how that might mess things up.

I’m still working on my holiday bingo! My reading pace has been a bit slow the last few months, but it’s coming along.

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? Yes, a nonfiction read, With God in Every Breath by Whitney R. Simpson.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year? Through Each Tomorrow by Gabrielle Meyer, To Begin Again by Emily Conrad, and Matchmaking the Cowboy by Emily Conrad!

As for the giveaway, I’d choose The Bitter End Birding Society by Amanda Cox. I’ve heard lots of good things about it. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! Jolene – iwant2save34 at gmail dot com

    1. Ohhh, very good point about the number of downloads on free and very low priced ebooks. That might just be why they aren’t included in the lists – it would definitely skew the results.

Another non-fiction book that isn’t quite finished yet! Glad I’m not the only one. Non-fiction books are the only ones that take me weeks to work my way through. I just read them slowly, a few pages at a time. Fiction I devour in a day or two. Love your end of the year line up! Good luck, Jolene!

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

I haven’t started any books that I haven’t finished, but I have started a few book series that I would like to finish. I’m not sure I’ll find enough time to do that though.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

I think the next book I’ve preordered comes out next year.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Two are to finish a series I started earlier this year: Counterfeit Hope and Counterfeit Faith by Crystal Caudill and the last one is Secrets of the Revolution by Megan Soja. I enjoyed the first book in the series and want to make sure I read the second before the third comes out next year.

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become a favourite of the year?

I’m not really sure, I’ve read some pretty great books so far, but I guess you never know until you read it! 🙂

For the giveaway, I would say A Very English Christmas by Carrie Turansky, Marguerite Gray, & Carole Lehr Johnson

  16. *** I just copied and pasted another entry and changed the answers, so I extend my thanks to the commenter.

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
I have some non-fiction on pause but no CF on pause. Well, I was reading a Kindle version of In His Steps by Charles Sheldon but I couldn’t finish. There was a warning from Amazon about it getting a lot of complaints. It was put together by a group of people and it’s much shorter than the 900-something other versions out there. I just couldn’t finish so I DNF’d it.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
Ashley Clark’s Christmas romcom is out on Nov. 20. I pre-ordered it.

I’m also awaiting Hooked by Stephanie Sanders on Dec. 02nd. It’s her debut. Pre-ordering hasn’t come up yet.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
I have three challenge prompts left out of the many challenges I did. A classic CF, a CF set in Eastern Europe, and a CF set during any holiday (the Ashley Clark one.) I haven’t decided on the other two yet.

I may read Gabrielle Meyer’s new Timeless book before year’s end. I have the paperback because I like series to all be in the same format also. I get most books on Kindle or audio.

I enjoyed the Sarah Monzon audiobook ARC. It wasn’t five stars for me but I did think it was better than the first book in the series. I read the e-ARC for Prowl but that series isn’t a fav of mine where Colleen Coble is concerned.

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become a favourite of the year?
I don’t think so but you never know. I did give a lot of 5 stars and 5+ stars this year and I don’t give them easily. I can’t even pick one favourite from all of those!!

The pricing on Amazon Canada baffles me. Some Kindle books are almost $20 and very close to paperback prices. Some PBs are creeping close to $30, sometimes more. I’ve been buying a lot less and checking Everand, Net Galley, Libby, etc more.

As for a book I would like to read, I’ve become more and more intrigued with Something Borrowed, esp because of Susie Finkbeiner, whose writing I’m a big fan of.

  17. lol — isn’t copy and paste grand?! I use it all the time for the giveaway options but I have to remember to change the book titles and the giveaway draw date. 🙂

You’re just like me — non-fiction books take longer to read but I devour the fiction books or dnf them quickly.

Eeeeepppp! Love that you mentioned Hooked by Stephanie Sanders — I just found out about it because her uncle contacted me about featuring it on the blog. Doesn’t it sound fabulous? Stay tuned…it will be cropping up here soon.

Oh, interesting, I preferred Hearts in Circulation a wee bit more than the first book because of Levi. Happy sigh. I’m about to start Prowl – the audio book. I like the unusual setting for this series.

Yes, trying to figure out Amazon pricing is crazy. It’s to the point that I can actually order a book through my local independent bookstore for a cheaper price. Great way to support local, but it used to be Amazon prices were always the cheapest way to go. And yes, the price of books on the Canadian site has gotten ridiculous, but not always, which is so strange. And it changes frequently which makes it even more frustrating. But I’ve also noticed that there are many more new release audible books at cheaper prices than before. Which makes absolutely no sense to me!

    Good luck, Tammy!

  19. Thank you for the reminder about the Holiday Bingo!  I’ve read so few books since mid October to now, I doubt that I’ll have many entries.  There is also no thanks to Goodreads for dumping out reviews that I’ve done and unlisting most of my Kindle books!  Who knows how much book tracking I’ve lost there?

I’m not loving the whole AI concept and I know it can hurt authors.  I just make sure to make purchases from legit booksellers.  I think that’s all I can do?

I have noticed the high price of e-books (especially since I finally bought a Kindle).  Thanks for the advice of going back in a few weeks to check the e-book prices.  I know that for The Christmas Book Flood by  Roseanna M. White that didn’t seem to happen, it’s still $10 for a novella. Those really SHOULD be lower since it’s an electronic format without printing or mailing anything.   Print books have gone up a lot, too.

Lingering on my TBR list is Through Each Tomorrow by Gabrielle Meyer only because I’m behind on the Timeless series and am just finishing up Every Hour Until Then.  It will be slow going though because I treat myself to a paperback to read along with the audio copy.

I have Ashley Clark’s Snowed Inn novella on preorder for a (somewhat) autumnal book transition.  It arrives on the 20th.  I’m going to count that as a new release that I’m waiting for too, because I do like Ashley Clark.  Maybe that will help me with Bingo!

Three books that I want to read by the end of the year:

Through Each Tomorrow by Gabrielle Meyer

The Atlas of Untold Stories by Sara Brunsvold

A Sea View Christmas by Julie Klassen

I also want to keep up on a daily basis with the Christmas For the Heart devotional by Cheryl Barker

(I also have way more than 3 on my TBR list!)

I think The Atlas of Untold Stories by Sara Brunsvold might just shock me and become this year’s favorite.  I’ve tried to read it once, but failed.  Right now The Bell Tolls at Traeger Hall by Jaime Jo Wright holds that spot as this year’s favorite.

Now for the one that got away for the drawing:

The Bitter End Birding Society by Amanda Cox

    (Sorry about my formatting!)

    1. Yikes! That’s awful about Good Reads. I track all my reading in journals so even if the digital info is lost I still have a hard copy. I’m kinda old-fashioned, I guess. Plus I have this blog, though I don’t review every book I read here.

Re AI – yes, it’s a case of buyer beware but also aware and put your money to legitimate authors’ works and narrators. If we don’t fall for the AI products it won’t be profitable for them but it’s getting trickier to spot the counterfeits for sure.

The interesting thing about The Christmas Book Flood is that it only released in kindle and audiobook — no print copy! And the audio copy was only $5 more than the Kindle. I’m thinking the costs reflect the whole behind the scenes production — editing, formatting, the techie stuff – so $10 is pretty reasonable for an ebook — way better than the new release costs of $18.99 we see with other books.

Interesting – you read and listen to a book at the same time? I’ve heard other readers say they enjoy that. I think it would drive me crazy. I’d always be jumping ahead with the book instead of reading at the same pace as the narration. I just can’t help myself, especially when I get to the exciting parts!

Snowed Inn sounds really good — and I do so love a stranded plot in a wintery setting! I have two of your want to read by the end of the year books on my TBR right now – we’ll see if I manage to get to them once my Christmas fiction compulsion eases off.

And yes, I’m definitely doing Christmas For the Heart too. It will be a lovely way to start the days in December.I just put a library hold on The Bitter End Birding Society so I’ll likely get that one in January or February. There’s quite the hold backup. Good luck, Perrianne!

  21. I’ve had fun doing the Bingo, and have enjoyed each prompt. I did stumble on a book set in autumn (who knew it would be hard!) – but I’ve found one to read now. 🙂

Three books I’m hoping to read before the the end of the year are: “Of Silver and Secrets” by Michelle Griep, and two Christmas books “Christmas in Mistletoe Square” by Pepper Basham, Cara Putman, Janine Rosche & Teresa Tysinger & “We Three Kings” by Crystal Caudill, Cara Putman & Angela Ruth Strong — If I don’t succeed, I do enjoy reading Christmas books in January, too!

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become a favourite of the year? Their Burden to Bear by Heather Tabers – the storyline intrigues me, and I love that it has a historical event I really don’t know much about. This is also the one I would pick for the giveaway. 🙂

  25. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

I never finished Loyally Luke by Pepper Basham because at the time I started reading it I only had the netgalley version the formatting was SO bad I had to pause. I need to read it in print. I now have it in print, but I want to backtrack and read the two books before it, before reading that one…. so it will have to wait.

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

I have The Wrong Kind of Falling by Whitney Amazeen as a TBR book in my plans for sometime before the end of the year. I just read book one in that series. So, I am all set for book 2 now.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Chasing Kensie: a novel by Drew Taylor

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Perilous Tides by Elizabeth Goddard: I need to be ready for book three’s release next year.

Never Forgotten by Hannah Linder: I have this on Net Galley AND print, so it just makes sense to get that netgalley percentage up, and read it off my shelf.

The Novel Adventures of Natalie Daughtry by Susan L. Tuttle: this one was recommended a bunch when it released, and I grabbed it back when it came out and I still have not read it.

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become a favourite of the year?

I still haven’t read Reverie by Drew Taylor, I have it in print and ebook… I have a feeling that when I do get around to reading it… that it WILL be a top read that I will wonder WHY I waited SO long to read it.

The Giveaway: one of the Christian Fiction books you would like to end the year with (that you don’t already have.) Alliance Bride by Jaye L. Knight email: blessedmommy3x AT gmail DOT com

I have to mention… The Maid of Sherwood Forest was so good, and Not exactly Mr. Darcy was a unique read, I can’t wait for book 2 in that series now! I think I saw Prowl on Netgalley for Read Now the last time I checked… but I could be wrong.

    Thanks for the chance!

    1. I’ve heard other people talk about bad formatting on Net Galley. That’s so strange. You’d think they’d want to make it as accessible as possible to encourage good reviews. You’ve reminded me that I have a Hannah Linder novel on my TBR and she’s an author I want to read to zero this year so I best get at it! Good luck, Jo Ruth!
