My Review:

published in 2023

I have bookish friend Diane to thank for my introduction to new-to-me author Urcelia Teixeira. Friend recommendations are the best, aren’t they? Now here I am at the start of some epic reading because ‘Jacob’s Well’ is the first book in a gripping suspense series and now that I’ve started, I’ve gotta read them all!

The series centres around Angus Reid, who has just accepted a Sheriff position in a town known for its corruption. In fact, the previous Sheriff was crooked. So Angus has a lot of suspicious open cases to work his way through and it seems like half the town is harbouring secrets.

Like young Jake. We meet the teen in the opening chapter and follow him through an overwhelming web of treacherous secrets. Oh, the folly of youth! And then there’s his mother, desperate to do whatever she must to save her boy which involves even more secrets. And that leaves Angus trying to blindly put the pieces together all while under the pressure of searching for two missing teens.

Phew! This was a page turner! I read it in one sitting because there just wasn’t any other choice if I wanted to keep my sanity! I appreciate the way the multiple points of view offered different perspectives and amped up the suspense. As a reader, it was intriguing to know things Angus didn’t. But there were other times that I was just as much in the dark as the Sheriff which added to the drama and intrigue.

The author has a canny way of incorporating faith into the lives of these characters. It’s seamlessly done, never preachy, but sometimes pointed and very thought provoking.

I really enjoyed my first visit to Weyport and am anxious to get back there soon and see what’s in store for Angus next. Plus, there are some secondary characters that I think will be playing an important part in the good Sheriff’s life as he acclimatizes to his new position and the town in general. I can’t wait of find out more!

  1. WOW! This beautiful and intriguing cover alone would have me picking it up for a look-e-loo. While not a new-to-me author (I’ve been following on Facebook for a short while), I’ve not had the great privilege of reading one of her books – yet. Love it when a book “makes” you read it one sitting because it pulls you so. Think it’s amazing when an author can do that AND add an amazing thread of faith as well. JACOB’S WELL sounds AMAZING! There’s no better way to start a series than with book one.

Thank you so very much for the amazing chance to win a copy of this much desired book!

    1. The cover does convey an air of mystery, doesn’t it? I’m excited to have ‘met’ this new-to-me author. Makes me wonder at how many others I missing out on? I have so many more author and books to discover! Good luck, Kay.

  2. So glad you enjoyed this author, Kav! Wait til you read Martha’s Veil! Definitely a one sitting read! I didn’t feel like I missed anything by reading it out of sequence. Some readers don’t care for over the top graphic suspense or much romance, so this series definitely fills the bill. Males will enjoy it as much as females!

    1. I guess it’s all my cozy mystery reading — I have to read them in order because of the recurring setting and secondary characters and it just makes me happy to journey murders in order with them. Bwahahaha! So, when I saw that Martha’s Veil was #6 and the series is about Angus starting as sheriff in a town with oodles of secrets I figured I might as well get in at the beginning. Mind you, I’ve discovered that there is a kinda prequel to the series, Little Boy Lost. Sounds like it was written as a standalone thriller with Angus as a deputy but then readers wanted a series so he got a promotion (I’m guessing the crooked sheriff is exposed in the prequel.) Sigh, you’ve created a reading monster, Diane!

      1. I get it. Totally! I’m so happy Angus got that promotion! Speaking of creating reading monsters—you should’ve seen me during Summer Bingo! Ahem. Oh, that’s right. You did! Bwahahaha
