When country music star Oaken Fox joins survivalist Mike Grizz’s new adventure show in the Alaskan wilderness, he just wants to boost his fan base. But when tragedy strikes and Air One Rescue must save them, Oaken wants to quit. Too bad his producer has other plans–signing him on with Air One Rescue as a recruit and making a reality show.
EMT Boo Kingston did not join Air One Rescue to train a celebrity. But she’s a rookie to the team, so yes, she’ll train Oaken and keep him alive and not for a minute pay attention to his charm.
And then five women go missing from a resort during a bachelorette weekend gone wrong. Now, Air One and the rescue team will have to use all their skills and manpower–including Oaken–to find them before a blizzard settles in. But can they work together before tragedy strikes?
My Review:
So…I am not a fan of celebrity heroes or reality shows in general and the heroine was even featured in a Survivor type show in the past. Yikes, what was I doing reaching for ‘One Last Shot’? Well…Susan May Warren is the author so that’s saying something and a lot of my Good Reads friends gave it high praise so I bravely stepped out of my comfort zone and was amazed!
Mercy, but this is one tense, edge-of-your-seat action read! Phenomenal descriptive writing makes a reader feel like she’s right there hanging out of a helicopter or balancing on the edge of a precipice.
And if those action scenes don’t draw you in, the complex emotional layers of drama and angst sure will! Oaken and Boo are thrown together in a series of heart-stopping situations that make for an interesting way to develop a relationship. Especially since Boo is dead set against opening up to anyone, never mind a country music heartthrob! Phew, I-n-t-e-n-s-e! And I love the way the author seamlessly weaves in a solid faith thread throughout. Everyone needs a Moose in their life, just sayin’.
A page-turning frenzy of a read…or, in my case, a compulsive listen. Narrators Adam Gold and Cynthia Ferrell are amazing! The way they carried the banter and tension among the team as well as Oaken and Boo. And I really enjoyed the sound effects used for the dialogue from the helicopter headsets. A simple addition to the production but really made me feel like I was right there with them! Excellent audio recording!

ONE LAST SHOT was placed on my TBR list because of who of the author, but the more I hear about it (including your great review), I can’t wait to read it. Definitely sounds like an adrenaline pumping, can’t put down story. One needs that kind of story to break up the swoon worth Regency, the light crime cozy and the immediately drawn romance stories.
Thank you for the fabulous chance to win a copy!

Great review! I don’t care for the celebrity angle in books either, but since it was Susan Warren, I didn’t even pause to think about it. She is a classic example for me of never-say-never because she can always change my mind on what I ‘think” I’ll like.
SMW has always hooked me with the strongest spiritual threads and the best quotes. She’s my top read author and I’m looking forward to her next book in the Minnesota Kingston’s. Steinbeck is the last book and grand finale in 5 book series. Whew, then here we go again with a, wait for it…pop singer and ex-cop in the new Call of the Wild series. Sorry, but I get excited about all the new books coming in January and beyond. Already plotting my course, lol.
Btw, I was flipping through my notebook and came across the bingo summer game and was curious how that turned out. Inquiring minds and all that 🙂

Bwahaha! Inquiring minds indeed. I better go check the rules I gave…but I’m pretty sure I said the winner would be posted Sept 6 – which is the usual giveaway winner day. Yikes, I better double check! Anyway, that’s the announcement day now. 🙂 Great participation and quite a few black out bingo cards. I am impressed!
I think that whole celebrity thing is why I tend to hesitate with SMW books — she uses that a lot and I have to brace myself every time but I always LOVE the books when I finally read them. It’s just an instinctive recoil I have when it comes to celebrity characters. Sounds like there will be lots of angsty, adventurous reading in store. for us. Just curious — are you caught up with all Susan’s books? I tried several years ago but then I got behind and now….well, there’s lots of catching up to do.
Happy Reading, Tracey!

Instinctive recoil is the perfect phrase, I have that too but I tend to trust my favorite authors and give it a chance.
I have been reading SMW since 2003 when I first came across her book Happily Ever After at my local Christian bookstore. Read the 3 books in that series and then in 2005 I read the Team Hope series and was hooked. I’ve read that series 3 times over the years. I don’t think she really hit her stride until the Christiansen series came out in 2013, she’s shot off like a rocket since then.
I haven’t read everything she’s written but I’m closing in on the tbr list. I read her books as they come out now. Tomorrow when Steinbeck comes out that will be my 90th book in 22 years. I still have another dozen or so to backtrack. I doubt I’ll ever get to the “read to zero” goal with her but my goal is to hit 100 with an author for the first time.
Happy reading Kav! I’m looking forward to some good cozy fall reading.

I know, right? Reality TV show, country music star, heroine with social media fame…not any of the things I look for in a book but I really enjoyed this one! Never say never as Tracey is fond of saying. Good luck, Lucy!
