First off — what exactly are the Carol Awards?

They are awards given out by American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) in recognition of outstanding Christian fiction in the previous calendar year. So these 2024 finalists are books published in 2023. You might have read them already, you might not. I’ll include links to books I’ve read and reviewed.

Carol Award Winners will be announced on September 7 2024 at the ACFW Gala in New Orleans, Louisiana (wouldn’t you love to be there?!)

How does this giveaway work?

You select which of the Carol Award finalists 2024 —Romantic Suspense Category you would like to receive. Mention the title in your comment (or an email if you’re entering that way) and if you win, that’s the book that will be sent to you. Easy Peasy.

Romantic Suspense Finalists

Expired Hope by Megan Besing and Lisa Phillips — Sunrise Publications — Editors: Lisa Phillips and Susan May Warren — Winner’s Choice of paperback or ebook (or audible in Canada)

What will it cost him to save her from the flames?

Veteran and therapist Natalie Atkinson is all about facing fears and surviving. After all, she’s been there, done that, and she’s ready for a new future in Last Chance County. Even if it includes helping the incoming Fire Chief confront his own issues to lead his fractured team.

Fire Chief Macon James has finally come home to do the job he’s always longed for, and he doesn’t need a therapist interfering with the running of his crew. More, she’s put them in jeopardy by insisting she “train with them”—a liability that might just get them killed. The way he sees it, she’s just another counsellor, interfering in ways that destroy lives.

When an explosion destroys her car it seems Natalie is a magnet for trouble. Is she the target of a stalker? Macon has no choice but to stick around and find out. But getting close to Natalie means discovering her secrets…and risking the chance she’ll discover his.

But her so-called stalker isn’t giving up. And when his worst fears ignite, with Natalie right in the middle, Macon will have to become the leader the team so desperately needs if they hope to save her life.

The second breathtaking book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series!

Under Fire by Lynn H. Blackburn – Revell — Editors: Amy Ballor and Kelsey Brown — winner’s choice of paperback or ebook ( or audible in Canada)

USSS Special Agent Zane Thacker has landed his dream assignment protecting the president of the United States. When the president plans a fundraiser at the exclusive estate of a political supporter in Raleigh, Zane is thrilled to be working again with Special Agent Tessa Reed, his best friend–and the woman he desperately wishes could be more.

Though Tessa almost lost everything, she battled her demons and came out on the other side healthy and healed. But when her role as the liaison between the Raleigh office and the president’s protective detail wrenches her past back into the present, her greatest failure threatens to come to light.

Zane refuses to let Tessa go through this alone. But can he stand by the woman he loves and protect the president from a mounting threat at the same time?

Sparks fly as award-winning romantic suspense writer Lynn H. Blackburn closes out her Defend and Protect series with this explosive tale of secrets kept, lies exposed, and relationships restored.

Critical Threat by Lynette Eason – Revell — Editors: Barb Barnes and Andrea Doering — Winner’s Choice of paperback or ebook (or audible in Canada)

FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley tracks serial killers, using her skills as a psychiatrist and behavioral analyst to get dangerous people off the street and safely behind bars. But prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a killer is incarcerated doesn’t mean they’re not a threat. His own father, Peter, is a serial killer–in prison but certainly not out of Sam’s life, as much as he wishes he was.

When bodies start showing up with Peter’s MO, Sam and Grace are both called in to consult. They’ve met before–and though Grace thought they’d made a real connection, Sam ghosted her. They’ll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to solve this case–especially because it’s about to get personal.

  3. I haven’t read her first 2 books in this series but it seems Lynn H. Blackburn’s book Under Fire can be read as a standalone. So I’ll go with that one.

  4. I’ve read the books by Megan Besing and Lynn Blackburn, both very good! Lynette Eason scares me with all the serial killers, eek!

    1. I’m not a huge serial killer fan either. In fact, I usually run the other way screaming rather than read one. 🙂 But I love Lynette Eason’s writing and her characters and team dynamics etc so I was brave on this one. It did creep me out in places and not one I’ll likely ever re-read. Glad that she doesn’t exclusively do serial killers like some suspense authors.

  5. Oooo, I do love a good suspense from Lisa Phillips! It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by her, so my choice is:

    Expired Hope

*I always get confused who writes these…so maybe Megan Besing is the actual author. Either way, if Lisa Phillips is involved in it somehow, I know it’s gonna be good 😉💖. And meeting a new-to-me writer is an extra special bonus!*

    1. Yes, Megan Besing is the actual author. Lisa Phillips comes into it because the book is based on the world she created in an earlier series. At least that’s how the others are. And I guess she mentors the author? But the actually writing, storyline, plot etc is all Megan Besing. I wish Sunrise Publishing made that clearer for both authors and readers. Good luck, Trixi!

  6. I can’t believe that I haven’t read any of these yet, and I love romantic suspense! So I will choose Under Fire by Lynn H. Blackburn because I know it will read well as a stand alone. Plus, I recently finished Never Fall Again and it was incredibly good! I’m loving her new Gossamer Falls series.

    Thank you, Kav!

    1. Yes!!! Never Fall Again was fantastic — that’s going to be a great series. I need to catch up on — I’m not into Secret Service protecting the president trope so I haven’t made this one a priority read. Someday though…maybe. Good luck, Perrianne!
