A second chance Regency Romance
“I didn’t really understand what love was. I didn’t know what it meant, that I should’ve fought harder for it.”
Banished from home by her angry father, Julie Devon travels to Bath to fulfill her role as family spinster by assisting her cousins, Lady Macon, in caring for her dying husband.
Nathaniel Hastings’s life runs in a predictable pattern, until a routine visit to one of his ailing patients brings him face to face with Julia, the woman who broke his heart five years before in London.
Julia and Nathaniel find themselves unlikely allies as they work together to tend to the family’s needs, fend off Lady Macon’s scheming brother-in-law, and avoid confronting the pain of their shared past. But could this accidental meeting be their second chance at love?
My Review:
published in 2018
Sometimes a reader just needs to lose herself in everything that is wonderful in a Regency Romance and when that mood hits, Sally Britton is definitely the author to reach for. In fact, she’s on my short list of authors I want to catch up with in 2023 so expect to see more of her books here in the future.
And this one is sheer perfection. Starting with — squuueeeeaaaaaallll — the second chance romance trope, which is done so well. My heart felt every ache and tug and the way the author develops the reacquainting of Julia and Nathaniel is absolutely divine. I felt the shock of their first meeting, the scattered thoughts, the battered equilibrium as they come to grips with not only seeing each other after five years, but having to work together for the greater good of a grieving family.
I was on delicious romantical tenterhooks all the way through! From the stilted conversations that slowly grow warmer as time passes to the barest hint of an eye twinkle and the wrenching sighs of pent up longing. Well, it is best to indulge in this read while reclining on your fainting couch and devouring chocolate bonbons (the better for keeping your strength up to deal with these broken hearts.)
No worries though, despite the more serious tone of this romance, there are light-hearted moments as well. And some truly comedic ones when poor Nathaniel receives love life advice from best his friend.
This is the second book in the Branches of Love series but can readily be enjoyed as a standalone novel. It’s definitely a series I intend to be reading more from very soon.

Kav, your reading tastes are very similar to mine. Do you want to move to my neighborhood or should I start looking for houses in yours? LOL Thanks for the review and the reminder about this book. I was going to enter the drawing, but I checked and it’s in my backlist on Kindle! I won’t tell you how many books I have stored on the Kindle cloud. It’s quite embarrassing.

Yikes! Wouldn’t that be neat? Our reading possibilities would be endless. Kinda glad I don’t have a kindle because I can just imagine how out of control mine would be. Having enough anxiety over the plethora of audible plus books I’ve added to my library! π Happy Reading, Winnie!

I already have this book, so am not entering the giveaway. Just letting people know that Sally is republishing this series with new covers and new series title. It’s called Devoted Hearts series. The covers that match the giveaway will no longer be available in the upcoming months. If you want to read the series, you will need to look under the Devoted Hearts title.

Thanks for that update, Sylvia. I see this book is still on Amazon as available in paperback. Phew! Must check and see what the new covers look like. Have to say that, as an avid reade,r I find repackaging books somewhat frustrating. I get excited because I think the author has a new book out only to discover that I’ve read it already. Or, worse, I auto buy it only discover I own it already. lol And it’s even more confusing when the change titles too. I’m trying to read all of Sally Britton’s books this year so it’s good to have this info ahead of the change.

Ha! So glad you noticed. I’m pretty proud of that. It was dumb luck finding it and I have no idea how to change the colour but I’ve successfully used it a couple of times so I think I’ve nailed it. (though I might just have jinxed myself.)
