Secondary Target + Giveaway

After the brutal murder of her mother and brother twelve years ago, Corina Roberts built a new life in Kentucky. But then strange things begin to happen, and she is thrust into a perilous game of life and death. With nowhere else to turn, her best hope of survival depends on her ex, army veteran Bryce Jessup.

Recently returned from service, Bryce has every intention of staying away from Corina, but when threats close in around her, he isn’t willing to leave her safety to chance. As their search for answers uncovers lethal secrets her detective father kept hidden, Bryce and Corina must untangle the mystery of the merciless killer intent on terrorizing and eliminating Corina’s family before it’s too late.

Debut author Angela Carlisle will leave you breathless with this bone-chilling story of a ruthless murderer, a deadly secret, and an unbreakable love.

My Review:

Whoa!!!! I can’t even…’cause I’m still discombobulated from…well, all of it so excuse my muddled thoughts spewed out in random fashion.

Stunning debut!

Unputdownable. I mean, really riveting stuff. Sometimes creepy but not over the top, just that nice stalker vibe that keeps a reader’s adrenaline rush on standby. 🙂

Two flawed characters making the best of an impossible situation. And it’s oh so complicated because Corina and Bryce were very close five years ago. So — yay — Second Chance Romance. But, goodness, their backstories!

And the way the author builds tension in the suspense is powerful! We get fleeting glimpses from the villains POV occasionally and let me tell you — jaw-dropping revelations by the end!

Great secondary characters create additional layers to the story and I’m anxious to see who is featured in the next book.

Thought-provoking inspirational thread centred around the age-old question of why God allows bad stuff to happen. I appreciated the raw honesty and brokenness — especially in Corina who really struggles with her faith.

I’m really excited to read more from Angela Carlisle. This is a fantastic thrill-of-a-read Debut!

  1. Not entering the contest because I’ve already read the book. Wasn’t it totally AMAZING! Boy, I can’t wait for another book by this author that’s for sure. Can’t recommend it enough. If you want a book that has it all – this is it!

  2. You got me with your review. Not that was all really. Love reading books by new authors just starting up. This one does sound like a winner already.

    1. Honest question would love to know how other readers handle books by a new author for them that they just can’t get into? Been a while since a started a book and skipped through to the end.

      1. Finding a new-to-me author is exhilarating and a wee bit scary all at the same time. I have a three chapters rule for whatever book I pick up. If I’m not engaged by the end of the third chapter or if I find offensive language or something like that then I DNF (Do Not Finish) doesn’t matter if it’s a known or unknown author. I have so many books I want to read and I want to spend my time reading books I love.

For new-to-me authors — I will usually be a bit more cautious about purchasing that first book. I’ll either find a copy at the library or I’ll do some research and check reviews, see what bookish friends have to say and what endorsing authors have to say before I buy a book by an unknown (to me) author. I’m rarely disappointed that way.

      2. The book I’m referring to was actually an older author whose books I hadn’t tried yet. Two of them were part of the “free” Christian books that I picked up a while ago. I realized very quickly in the first chapter that she was a long winded rambling writer but I do want to give this book a chance. But I ended up just getting rid of them. Nothing offensive I just did not like her writing style I guess and could get into the story it seemed.

  3. So, leaving my comfort zone a little bit more lately and reading more suspense genre books. This one is fantastic!! It wasn’t too scary for me, just edge of your seat with a wonderful romance too. Not entering the giveaway, just agreeing with your great review! And definitely planning on reading book two in this series. Sandy

  4. I don’t pick up a suspense often these days, but I do love discovering debut authors & reading second chance/ reunion love stories. This one sounds good! I’ve seen very positive reviews for Secondary Target. 😊

  7. I really love a fantastic debut novel, and judging by your review, I’m in for a treat. I also think I need to take your advice and kick a book over to the DNF state after three chapters. There is soooooo much really good Christian Fiction out there that I really should not punish myself with something that I’m really not enjoying. I think this one is right up my alley, though!

    1. Yessss….DNFing is a reader’s friend. You can always try a book again another time, it might be a mood thing, but no sense in making an escape read seem like work! Good luck, Perrianne!

  8. I’ve never been a huge suspense reader, but have been dipping my toe in the water, so to speak a little bit more lately.
    Sounds like a great debut!
