The Christmas Heirloom + Giveaway

Perfect for the Christmas season, four beloved authors bring their bestselling, award-winning talents to a multigenerational collection of romantic holiday novellas. In stories ranging from 1820s Regency England to present-day Washington state, readers will be treated to Christmas tales of an heirloom brooch passed from mother to daughter for almost two hundred years. Will the family legend claiming the brooch brings love to its recipient hold true for these women separated by the years but bonded together by the ties of family?

In Kristi Ann Hunter’s “Legacy of Love,” Sarah Gooding never suspected returning a brooch to an elderly woman would lead to a job . . . and introduce her to the woman’s grandson. While he may be far above her station, she can’t help but notice that his desire to make this Christmas special for his grandmother matches her own.

In Karen Witemeyer’s “Gift of the Heart,” widow Ruth Albright uses the family brooch as collateral for a loan from the local banker. But the more she comes to know the man behind the stern businessman, the more she hopes for a second chance at love as the holidays draw near.

In Sarah Loudin Thomas’s “A Shot at Love,” Fleeta Brady’s rough-and-tumble childhood means she prefers hunting to more feminine activities. She never expected her mother’s brooch might be how a fellow hunter turns her attention from competition to romance one December.

In Becky Wade’s “Because of You,” Maddie Winslow has spent years in love with a man whose heart was already spoken for. When a church Christmas project brings them together and she stumbles upon an old family brooch, might it finally be her turn for love?

My Review:

published in 2018

I don’t read a ton of novellas but I’m fond of Christmas collections and these stories do justice to that beautiful cover. I love the heirloom brooch connection to all four stories and the way we get to follow it through the generations.

Loved the opportunity to time travel with four of my favourite authors, savoring spectacular love stories that span centuries. Each one reads like a full length novel with all the complexities of character and plot. Think toe-curls and swoons times four! Leaves a romantical reader kinda breathless! And you can’t beat four happily-ever-after Christmas themed love stories to get you in the holiday spirit! A perfect pre-Christmas gift for any avid reader on your list (including you!)

Uneasy Street + Giveaway

Once upon a time Max Cirillo and Sloane Madison were close friends and business partners. But when their business relationship imploded, so did the friendship.

Now, four years later, Max is a rich CEO. Sloane’s a not-so-rich etiquette expert who returns to Maine to serve as her niece’s temporary guardian and help the girl search for her birth father. Sloane and her niece move into a darling garage apartment but Sloane’s joy in their accommodations soon turns to horror when she realizes their apartment belongs to Max. Thanks to an unbreakable lease, she’s stuck living right next door to him.

Max pulled strings to bring Sloane into his orbit because he needs closure on what went wrong between them. Quickly, though, his scheming comes back to bite him. The world might view him as a cold-hearted rake, but this one woman has dangerous power over his emotions.

They’ll have no choice but to confront their history—and the undeniable spark between them—while living side by side on uneasy street.

Discover witty humor, rich emotion, banter, and charm within the pages of this sweet enemies-to-lovers romance!

My Review:

Becky Wade’s books are always a treat and this last book in her ‘Sons of Scandal’ series is exceptional. A lovely mix of angst and humour with a gentle, but oh so profound, faith thread woven throughout.

While ‘Uneasy Street’ could work well as a standalone, I think reading the books in order will enrich your enjoyment so much more. This crazy, complicated family, the brothers and their personal love stories, all build to this grande finale featuring outcast Max.

Excuse me while I swoon, but Max is so…Max! Infuriating at times, yes, but, oh my, once he makes his mind up about Sloane…well, it’s all toe-curls and smelling salts. But oh what a journey! Wade kept me on tenterhooks right to the end with this unique friends to enemies to wary friends to more trope.

Sloane is such an interesting mix of fiery spunkiness and controlled etiquette expert. Love her profession! The way she leans into the structure in the rules of conduct like they are a security blanket. It’s funny and sad all wrapped up together. And makes a great contrast to Max’s laid back, easy going manner.

And, oh my, the banter between these two! Max knows just how to goad Sloane and no matter how outrageous he was, I couldn’t stop falling for him. I was definitely Team Max from the start, impatiently waiting for Sloane to catch up. So. Much. Fun.

And if all that romantical deliciousness wasn’t enough, the author also gives us two family mysteries to sort out and Max is in the middle of both of them. ‘Uneasy Street’ is the kind of emotionally compelling story you don’t want to come to an end. I could have done with a dozen more epilogues but even then, I’d be left wanting more.

I listened to the audio book and thrilled over the dual narration provided by Reba Buhr and Ryan Hudson. Brilliant performances that captured the essence of these beloved characters making this an emotionally satisfying listening experience. The combination of storytelling and acting talent ensures that ‘Uneasy Street’ will end up on my re-listen play list.

My thanks to the author and Net Galley for providing me with an audio edition of this book.

Rocky Road + Giveaway

Christy Award Hall of Fame Author

FBI Agent Jude Camden handles every aspect of his job with by-the-book professionalism. There’s no reason why his latest assignment—which calls for him to pose as the boyfriend of perfumer Gemma Clare—should be any different.

Except Gemma is different. She’s creative, bold, and feisty. And as soon as she meets Jude, she wants to loosen him up, wrinkle his perfect shirts, and test every ounce of his towering self-control.

The FBI has an iron-clad rule against romances between those working together on operations. Jude’s never met a rule he didn’t respect. But adhering to this one is going to be tough because, as time goes by, he finds Gemma more and more irresistible.

Buckle up! It’s going to be a rocky road.

Escape to Maine for this swoon-worthy “fake romance”! Banter, humor, perfume, and a mystery from the past intertwine in this sweet Sons of Scandal love story.

My Review:

Bwahahaha! That Meet-Cute!!!! Snicker inducing and so much fun! Sets the tone for this relationship of contrasts. Because you can’t get more opposite attracts than Gemma and Jude! She’s Miss Impulsive Spontaneity and he’s Mr Cool and Collected and she loves messing with that. (That scene involving a shirt – hilarious!) So many ‘Cheshire grin’ opportunities played out to perfection. 🙂

But, while I’d classify this as a rom/com — it’s also much more! There’s family drama and complicated back stories and deep faith discussions…the messy, real life stuff that we all have to deal with to some degree. And the way the author pulls it all together is sheer brilliance. As emotionally satisfying as it is fun to read.

While mainly told from Gemma and Jude’s POVs, we are also treated to the occasional personal reflections of Jude’s mother. Her story is a bit of a carry over from the first book and will continue on into the third and I’m really looking forward to that. (Side Note: I think this ‘Sons of Scandal’ series would be best read in order. It will make sense if you jump in here but certain things will make more of an impact if you read ‘Memory Lane’ first. )

Becky Wade’s storytelling is sweet perfection. Word choice, descriptions, banter (!!!!), snappy one-liners, soul-stirring reflections…she delivers it all with such grace and hope…and humour.

And that sweet little epilogue! There should have been a warning posted! Luckily my fainting couch was perfectly situated to catch me mid toe-curling swoon!

I listened to the audible edition of ‘Rocky Road’ and thoroughly enjoyed the dual narration performed by Reba Buhr and Ryan Hudson.

Memory Lane + Giveaway

After surviving a trauma several years back, Remy Reed relocated to a cottage on one of Maine’s most remote islands. She’s arranged her life just the way she wants it, spending her time working on her wood sculptures and soaking in the beauty of nature. It’s quite and solitary — until the day she spots something bobbing in the ocean.

Her binoculars reveal the ‘something’ to be a man, and he’s struggling to keep his head above water. She races out to save him and brings him into her home. He’s injured, which doesn’t detract from his handsomeness nor make him any easier to bear. He acts like a duke who’s misplaced his dukedom…expensive tastes, lazy charm, bossy ideas.

Remy would love nothing more than to return him to his people, but he has no recollection of his life prior to the moment she rescued him. Though she’s not interested in relationships other than the safe ones she’s already established, she begins to realize that he’s coming to depend on her.

Who is he? What happened that landed him in the Atlantic Ocean? And why is she drawn to him more and more as time goes by?

There’s no way to discover those answers except to walk beside him down memory lane.

My Review:

“God has a soft spot for those of us who feel like we we’ve been thrown onto the garage sale pile….He’s never closer to us then when we are beaten up, unloved, betrayed.”

My brain is fried, my heart is short-circuited and I’m drifting on a cloud of bibliophile euphoria right now so excuse me if this review doesn’t make any sense. 🙂

Seriously not what I expected…at all. I love Becky Wade’s storytelling and have read all of her novels, but I have to say that this first book in her new ‘Sons of Scandal‘ series is off the charts phenomenal in every way imaginable! I listened to the audible edition and highly recommend it if you love audio books. Narrators Heather Masters and Ryan Hunter do an incredible job of bringing Remy and her ‘Jonah’ to life. I was spellbound all the way through.

This is the kind of read that you can’t wait to get through because there is so much you need to know, but you also want slow down and savour every scene. Besides, what on earth will you do once it’s all over?! (Except impatiently wait until next year when the second book comes out.)

And I guess here is as good a place as any to point out that the amnesia trope is one of my least favourites. Read too many, seen it way overdone, cliched to death etc etc. But two words convinced me to give this one a try: Becky. Wade. And (is anyone surprised?) Best Amnesia story EVER!!!!! Seriously believable and anxiety inducing and so intriguing. This isn’t the ‘bam on the head one week later and your memory comes back’ kind of deal. This is agonizingly slow and soul searching and really delves into the uncertainty and complications of walking around without any concrete memories.

It’s no wonder ‘Jonah’ connects to Remy — she’s all he really knows at first. But she’s not a fan. Their romance starts out in a very humorous enemies to more kind of way. My, but that woman can hold a grudge and drag her heels and get her back up over ever little thing! (She has her reasons which are slowly revealed through the course of the story.) But ‘Jonah’ gets a kick out of her fiery attitude so it doesn’t deter him at all.

Their romance is…no words here. Complicated. Heart-rending. Toe-curling to the point of not being able to stand upright for the swoonability of some scenes.

And there’s even a mystery to add to the unputdownableness of it all!
