Dying Cry

A killer lurks in Colorado’s snowy high country in Dying Cry, the tenth thrilling installment of award-winning author Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K-9 mystery series.

Newlyweds Mattie and Cole Walker are teaching Cole’s daughters how to snowshoe in a remote canyon when a shattering scream pierces the air. They know that somewhere ahead, someone has been injured or worse. Cole takes the girls while Mattie and Robo go deeper into the canyon to search for the source of the scream. 

From a distance, Mattie and Robo see a shadowy figure at the base of a cliff, but a rockslide buries the person under layers of stone and shale before they can provide help. Desperate to uncover the individual in case they’re still alive under the rock, their efforts are in vain. The victim is already dead. When they investigate the canyon rim from which the person fell, they discover evidence that indicates the fall was no accident. To make matters worse, the victim was one of Cole’s friends. 

The Timber Creek County investigative team springs into action, uncovering a trail of greed that leads to a killer who threatens Mattie’s cherished new family and tests her with the most difficult task she’s faced in her duty as a K-9 handler. 

My Review:

This is my favourite K-9 mystery series. It’s grittier than a cozy but not quite a thriller and probably about as edgy as I’m willing to go ’cause I’m a scaredy cat. It’s definitely best to read the books in order because of the phenomenal character growth – and not just with Mattie and Cole but a host of secondary characters as well. It is worth taking the time to watch them all evolve over the course of the series, including the romance (eeeeppp!)

Robo, the wonder dog, is a huge draw for me too and I love the extra bits of K-9 training and logistics that the author includes. I haven’t read another book with such a comprehensive approach to the K-9 aspect. Informative without taking away from the action of the story. In fact, it actually adds to the tension and suspense. I get as revved up as Robo trailing a scent!

‘Dying Cry’ is part police procedural, part wilderness adventure and chockfull of emotion since this murder hits close to home for Mattie. Newly married and trying to find her footing as stepmother to Cole’s precocious daughters, she struggles to find a balance between family life and working a gruesome investigation.

Love the role reversal of Mattie being the deputy facing danger every day while Cole is ‘safely’ ensconced at his veterinary practice. And the way the suspense plays out kept me on edge all the way to the end. Mercy, that climax – completely riveting with plenty of gasp out loud moments!

I listened to the audio book and Nancy Wu’s narration is a perfect match for Margaret Mizushima’s storytelling style. She’s been the Timber Creek K-9 voice from the very beginning and I really appreciate that continuity. Highly recommend the audio books to discerning listeners everywhere!

I have bookish friend Diane to thank for my introduction to new-to-me author Urcelia Teixeira. Friend recommendations are the best, aren’t they? Now here I am at the start of some epic reading because ‘Jacob’s Well’ is the first book in a gripping suspense series and now that I’ve started, I’ve gotta read them all!

The series centres around Angus Reid, who has just accepted a Sheriff position in a town known for its corruption. In fact, the previous Sheriff was crooked. So Angus has a lot of suspicious open cases to work his way through and it seems like half the town is harbouring secrets.

Like young Jake. We meet the teen in the opening chapter and follow him through an overwhelming web of treacherous secrets. Oh, the folly of youth! And then there’s his mother, desperate to do whatever she must to save her boy which involves even more secrets. And that leaves Angus trying to blindly put the pieces together all while under the pressure of searching for two missing teens.

Phew! This was a page turner! I read it in one sitting because there just wasn’t any other choice if I wanted to keep my sanity! I appreciate the way the multiple points of view offered different perspectives and amped up the suspense. As a reader, it was intriguing to know things Angus didn’t. But there were other times that I was just as much in the dark as the Sheriff which added to the drama and intrigue.

The author has a canny way of incorporating faith into the lives of these characters. It’s seamlessly done, never preachy, but sometimes pointed and very thought provoking.

I really enjoyed my first visit to Weyport and am anxious to get back there soon and see what’s in store for Angus next. Plus, there are some secondary characters that I think will be playing an important part in the good Sheriff’s life as he acclimatizes to his new position and the town in general. I can’t wait of find out more!

Whoa! I’m stunned and my head is still spinning over that twisty-turny nosedive at the end. This might just be Nancy Mehl’s best book to date which is saying something because I adore her stories! But this one is…definitely on a whole other level.

A psychological thriller of a mystery with some of the elements of a Criminal Minds episode but without the TV series’ over-the-top ghoul factor. 🙂 For cautious suspense readers I can honestly say I can’t watch Criminal Minds without getting nightmares but I gobbled up Mind Games for all it’s deliciously shivery suspensey goodness. Fascinating police procedural with one of the most complex heroines I’ve ever met within the pages of a book!

Kaely’s backstory is so complex and intriguing. Her coping mechanisms — her profiling techniques — the brilliance that masks a touching vulnerability. And most surprising of all — her deep and abiding faith. Something that fellow agent Noah can’t understand but Kaely doesn’t shy away from sharing.

“I have a lot of issues leftover from my past. God has never condemned me for them. He just keeps leading me slowly but surely out of the dark, at the pace I need.” (p 165)

Engaging in mind games with a serial killer is the first case Noah and Kaely share but it won’t be their last. Love the way their relationship develops over the course of this book. He’s wary, she’s reserved and learning to trust each other is central to their moving forward both professionally and personally. This isn’t a romance, but I have the feeling that one is going to develop over the course of the series.

Intense, clever, exceptionally paced — Mind Games is the epitome of a page-turner! I guarantee you won’t be able to put this one down until you’ve reached the mind-blowing conclusion.

The Lies We Believe

It’s a frantic hunt as Tucker and his team race to save thirteen children, including Sadie. But when Sadie’s mother comes to him with credible evidence on who is behind the girls’ disappearances, the situation quickly spirals out of control with a final twist that has Tucker questioning everything he knows to be true.

Whoa! Intense and riveting! I was totally sucked in from the very first sentence: “There are seventy-two unbroken white tiles on the floor of the intake lobby of the psychiatric hospital.” Major thriller vibes all the way through as Riley is faced with a tsunami of impossible situations. Has she lost touch with reality or is someone trying to make it look that way? Super suspenseful. I non-stopped listened to the entire book. Just couldn’t tear myself away. And while some things are sorted in this first ‘Shadow Stalkers’ novel it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger which makes me think this is going to be a continuous sort of series featuring Riley every step of the way. Eeeep. Can’t wait for more.

Guilty Until Innocent

When an old case is reopened, two lawyers work to prove a man’s innocence despite the odds stacked against them.

After being fired from his last two jobs, Ryan Clark lands an associate position with a law firm run by his distant cousin, Tom, in a small North Carolina town. Over twenty-five years earlier, Tom represented local man Joe Moore when he was convicted of murder in the deaths of a prominent young couple. Even though the evidence was circumstantial, Joe was high on drugs and doesn’t remember the details of the crime. He never seriously questioned his own guilt, even when he was originally accused. Not only has he adapted to life in prison but he’s become a different person there and has a significant ministry to fellow inmates.

But Joe’s family remains unconvinced of his guilt, and they hire Ryan and Tom to file a motion to obtain Joe’s release. The resulting investigation uncovers layers of dark secrets in the local community. It will result either in Joe’s vindication–or expand the number of people who should join him behind bars.

My Review:

A character driven story that slowly builds in suspense and, mercy, but the faith elements in this novel are phenomenal.

The book’s strength is in the character growth. It is told from multiple points of view with varied perspectives that blend into a cohesive whole by the end. There’s Joe, twenty + years into a lifetime prison sentence for double homicide; Ryan, an up and coming young lawyer and his wife, Paige. I enjoyed the time I spent with each character and loved the way their faith journeys intersected, shining a spotlight on how God can work good out of any situation.

I went into this book expecting a legal thriller/suspense but I found the plot takes more of a meandering pace towards the action packed conclusion. Definitely more of a redemptive type of story with a side of suspense. I figured out the whodunnit aspect very early on, but it was still fun (and frustrating) to watch Ryan take his sweet time reaching the same conclusion…when it’s almost too late!

I listened to the audio edition of ‘Guilty Until Innocent’ and found it to be an easy listen. I don’t usually enjoy male narrators because their female voices often feel like caricatures, but Jason Keller’s performance worked well for this story. I liked the way he brought distinctive voices to the characters…along with some Southern twang!

The Night Woods

The sixth Mercy Carr Mystery in which Mercy and Elvis must prove the innocence of a new friend accused of murder.

Record snow and sleet and rain are pummeling Vermont and a wild boar has escaped from an exclusive hunting club nearby―but that won’t stop a very pregnant and very bored Mercy Carr from hiking her beloved woods with her loyal dog Elvis. She’s supposed to be decorating the nursery and helping her mother plan the baby shower, but she’d much rather be playing Scrabble with Homer Grant, a word-loving, shotgun-toting hermit living deep in the forest. But when she and Elvis drop by Homer’s cabin for their weekly game, they arrive to find an unknown dead man―and no sign of Homer.

As they search the woods, Mercy discovers a patch of devastation that could only be left behind by wild boar. She’s relieved when Elvis tracks Homer, injured but alive. But Homer’s troubles are far from over, as he’s still the number one suspect and he remembers nothing of the attack. When another corpse with a link to Homer is found, Mercy is determined to help her friend, an effort complicated by the unexpected arrival of her young cousin Tandie, sent by Mercy’s mother to keep an eye on her until the baby is born.

As the floods worsen, Troy and Susie Bear are called out with all the other first responders, and Mercy finds herself alone at Grackle Tree Farm with a concussed Homer, Tandie, and Elvis. As waters rise and the wild boar rampages, Mercy realizes that the murderer is out there ready to strike again, this time much closer to home.

My Review:

This is such a stupendous series! I particularly love the deep characterization that builds from book to book – and not just in Mercy but other characters as well. In fact, by this sixth book, she has accumulated a wonderful group of misfits who have become the best kind of found family.

I recommend reading this series in order to get the most out of character back stories and growth in relationships. Both Mercy and her dog, Elvis, are former military, have struggled to varying degrees with PTSD and are still adjusting to civilian life. Mercy has also made some significant life changes over the course of the series which makes me appreciate her all the more in ‘The Night Woods.’

And, mercy! (pun intended), what an incredible addition to the series. In a word; unputdownable! This mystery hits very close to home at a time when Mercy is most vulnerable. My heart was in my throat the entire read. A complex, twisty-turny plot kept me on edge right to very end. But it’s not all high-octane intensity because Munier brilliantly mixes action and suspense with more heartwarming scenes with family and friends which made for some very sweet (and sometimes funny) interludes.

A very satisfying and immersive ‘read’.

Well, ‘listen’ actually because I enjoyed the audio edition expertly narrated by Kathleen McInerney who gave Mercy just the right kind of edge and grit while creating distinctive voices for a multitude of secondary characters.. McInerney is one of my favourite voice actors, her name attached to a fave author’s screams ‘buy me’ and I usually do.

Of note: contains some mild language.

This was a new-to-me-author and an out of comfort zone read for me and I’m gobsmacked over how much I enjoyed ‘Trial and Error.’ It quickly became a read in one sitting extravaganza because I was hooked on the very first page.

Heartbreaking subject matter — missing/kidnapped children — but Whitlow does it justice. He brings compassion and hope in the midst of such darkness. And I found that his writing style complimented the topic. Crisp, matter-of-fact, almost brusque at times, and written in such a way that I understood the gist of the legal stuff even though that isn’t my forte and my country’s system is different.

I loved Buddy — his heart for justice and yearning to find the daughter he hasn’t seen since she was a baby. His quest to find her is a central part of the story but we follow two other missing children cases as well. And the way the author weaves all the details together into one cohesive whole is thrilling!

And, oh my, the faith thread(s)! So powerful and uplifting and goosebumping! What a testimony for finding God in the hard places and appreciating His timing even when we can’t always understand the why of waiting.

My first Robert Whitlow book but it won’t be my last!

My Review:

Well now, here I am, again, gobsmacked by D. L. Wood and sputtering for words to describe how truly compelling this story was. I mean…again, so much to say, but I can’t without spoilers. This author excels at ramping up tension and thwarting would-be armchair sleuths at every turn. I was on the edge all the way through! It’s emotional and hair-raising and intriguing and absolutely unputdownable!

And Dani, our plucky heroine with a loyal heart and the kind of staying power that won’t allow her to give up, has stirred up a cauldron of seething secrets the second she’s back home. Love the small town Alabama setting, her friend group that has stood the test of time, and the way her familiarity with people and places makes it easier (and sometimes harder!) to look into a ten year old closed case that she thinks should be a cold one.

And I really can’t say anything else because there aren’t just plot twists — there are hairpin turns that kept me discombobulated all the way through. This is only my second book by this author, but she’s just moved up on my ‘Author Catch Up Reading List ‘for 2024. Truly, suspense at it’s finest.

Cold Pursuit + Giveaway

My Review:

‘Page-turning thrills’ about sums up this suspense for sure. From that chilling prologue to the inclusion of a disturbing ‘unsub’ POV, this one kept me on edge the whole read through. It definitely had more ‘Criminal Minds’ vibes than I am comfortable with, though the descriptions in the book don’t go nearly as far as that series did, so, phew, for that. I’d consider ‘Cold Pursuit’ on the thriller side of suspense so definitely out of my comfort zone.

I did get the feeling that this series is a spin-off of another series? So, I felt like there were things I should have known about River and Tony already. They are friends with a work history who shared a trauma and that’s given them an even stronger bond. They’ve left their jobs with the FBI to start up a new Private Investigation firm and their first case is a doozy!

This is an emotionally layered suspense with a nice balance between character-driven and suspenseful plots. Lots of moving pieces to sort through and I really like how the investigation developed, bringing truth to light and, ultimately peace to a grieving mother. There’s also a secondary plot — both in suspense and romance (I’m guessing) — that will continue on through the series.

‘Cold Pursuit’ features a suspense trope that leaves me a tad uncomfortable. I don’t want to say what it is, because it’s not stated in the synopsis, but it’s quickly evident early on in the story. Does that have you intigued? 🙂 If I’d known that would be the focus of the story, I likely would have given this one a pass. But the story is well-written and riveting – just not for the faint of heart. I need to dive into a rom/com to bring my blood pressure down.

My Review:

This was a nano-second mood-read decision. I saw a brief review on instagram that intrigued me enough to check it out, discovered the book on audible for a decent price and bought it, downloaded it and started listening all in under five minutes! My intention was to schedule this review for sometime in late Fall, since it has a Christmas theme too, except I’m beside myself with excited enthusiasm and I can’t bear to wait months to share this awesome biblio-find! So, ta-da, here we are with Christmas in July.

Only…this is a novella. A stunning, cleverly crafted, edge-of-your-seat, what-is-happening kind of suspense but, because of the shorter word count, I can’t really say anything without giving stuff away. I am so tempted to tease you with hints, but I’m worried even that would ruin the reading experience for you. But I sooooo want to talk to somebody about that….and the scene where…and…and….and…but I’ll restrain myself and say only this:

Listened to it in one go — excellent narration by Lisa Bozek — finished it gobsmacked. Now I’m on the hunt for more books by D L Wood. (Hooray for new-to-me author finds, especially when they come from reader recommends.)
