Winning the Gentleman + Giveaway

Aaron Whitworth hasn’t had control over most aspects of his life, but he’s always taken pride in being an honorable businessman and better-than-average horseman. When both of those claims are threatened, he makes the desperate decision to hire the horse trainer of a traveling circus as a temporary jockey for his racehorses.

Sophia Fitzroy knows that most horsemen don’t take her seriously because she’s a woman, but she can’t pass up the opportunity to get away from the tumultuous world of travel and performing. As she fights for the right to do the work she was hired for, she learns the fight for Aaron’s guarded heart might be an even more worthwhile challenge.

As secrets come to light and past vulnerabilities are confronted, will Aaron and Sophia sacrifice their former dreams and forge a new on together?

My Review:

published in 2020

Let it be known that after reading the first Hearts on the Heath novel I was chomping at the bit to get my hands on this second book. No surprise then to note that Winning the Gentleman didn’t have to jockey for position on my TBR pile…it never made it that far. That’s because I had difficulty reining in my excitement and raced right into reading…er listening…the second I woke up on release day. Alas, I galloped through with unbridled enthusiasm and it was over all too soon. Therefore, I suggest you approach your reading using a different tack by pacing yourself so the thrill lasts longer. 🙂

Ahem, I shall put aside me long buried horse-mad tweenish self and attempt to come up with a proper review. Excuse me if intermittent squeals burst forth because…well, why don’t I get the biblio-theatrics out of the way right from the start?

Sqqquuuuueeeealllllllll!!!!! (sorry for any pierced eardrums)

THUD! (no worries, fainting couch on hand)

and repeat, multiple times during the course of this read.

Because…

Aaron!!!! And not only Aaron but a bevy of previous Hunter heroes manage to gather on multiple occasions causing my delicate reader’s heart to race in giddy euphoria. The banter and smirking and honorary brothers backing brothers when the chips are down! I’m still grinning.

And, of course, their heroines make appearances too, which is a little overwhelming for poor Sophia because that sisterhood is a force to be reckoned with. More banter and laughter along with gentle kindness and passionate support for the scandalous horsewoman. Honestly, just these friendly bonding scenes make this book a worthwhile read. But when Hunter puts Aaron and Sophia on the same page…more swooning and squealing and general fangirling ensues.

These two have chemistry! But they are in an impossible situation (a lot of which is their own doing Stringing words into sentences has the power to clarify issues, just sayin’.) But Sophia and Aaron are both battling feelings of inferiority for different reasons and finding a place for themselves within the strict confines of England’s rigid class system makes it that much harder.

The plot is delightfully complicated with enough twists and turns to keep me on high alert until the very end. Hunter deals with very real, raw emotions with grace and humour…and faith! This is truly an inspiring read and there’s no doubt about Winning the Gentleman being Christian Fiction. But that doesn’t mean it’s preachy or stilted. Faith flows naturally and brings added depth to an already richly layered story.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Ann Marie Gideon and I enjoyed every delectable second.

Oh — and no worries if you haven’t read the first book in this series, Vying for the Viscount, or any other books by Kristi Ann Hunter (though I am worried over how much you are missing out on!) Winning the Gentleman reads beautifully as a standalone novel as well.

They’ve waited their whole lives for their papa to return, for tomorrow to come—but now that it has, will they be able to see through to the truth and end this whirlwind of a nightmare before it costs one of their lives?

My Review:

I’m all kinds of addlepated after finishing this amazing Regency Romance with a definite air of mystery. I read Hannah Linder’s debut novel earlier this year and was gobsmacked and this is me once again, mouth agape in stunned bibliophile astonishment. Soooooooooooooooo very good!

Great Expectations meets Mary Stewart/Victoria Holt, creating all kinds of Gothic vibes that ricochet right through the story. I’m still experiencing afterglow goose bumping! And it all starts with the very Dickens-esque, heart wrenching opening scene.

The author lays the foundational work with the harrowing account of Nan and Heath’s childhood living on the London streets through to the agonizing moment they are separated. And I do mean agonizing. I cried. We get both points of view as Nan and Heath struggle to find peace with the direction the split has taken them. I don’t want to say more but I was a blubbering basket case as I lived through every excruciating moment with each of them. I’d say a good quarter — maybe even a third — of the book covers the sibling’s childhood and adolescence.

And then — wow — the story just builds from there. With tons of unexpected twists, moral dilemmas and a looming mystery that threatens all they’ve come to hold dear. On top of that we get two romances! Eeeepppp! Let’s just say the romantic tension sizzling around the Gothic undertones gave me heart palpitations so, fainting couches and smelling salts advised.

This stirring redemptive tale is made all the stronger for the wonderful faith elements woven seamlessly throughout which makes this a sweet perfection of a read.

I listened to the audible edition, narrated by Natasha Soudek and enjoyed every mesmerizing second.

Vying for the Viscount + Giveaway

For Hudson, the newly titled Viscount Stildon, moving to England from India where he was born and raised was already an arduous enough endeavor. When he learns the fate of the racing empire he inherited along with his title depends upon him getting in the good graces of another stable owner, he’s even more at a loss.

The stable at the neighboring estate has been Miss Bianca Snowley’s refuge for years, and when a strange man appears to be stealing the horses, she jumps to their protection without a second thought. Upon learning Hudson is actually the new owner, she can’t help but be intrigued by the area’s newest eligible bachelor.

Any thought of romance is quickly set aside, however, when Hudson proposes they work together to secure suitable spouses for each other. As their friendship grows, Hudson and Bianca begin to reconsider what they truly want in life. But will societal expectations and the weight of their responsibilities keep them from pursuing their true desires?

My Review:

published in 2020 (another re-read courtesy of Audible!)

Oh, my heart!!! I’m a sweet dithering mess of swoonalicious goo! Gather all your Regency accoutrements (fainting couch, smelling salts, fans) because you’re going to need them! What a rapturous start to a new Kristi Ann Hunter series.

I love her Regency world building. I feel like I’ve fallen into an Austen novel only the heroines are a bit more…spunky? (No booing from the Austen crowd!) and the secondary characters are just as alluring as her main characters. In fact, there are a couple of gentlemen that better star in their own stories (pointed hint to the author.) I’ll expire if she doesn’t! Cue a graceful swoon onto my fainting couch.

Ohhhhh — and speaking of swooning!!!! Hudson!!!!!!! He is so out of his element when he arrives in England. He’s lived in India his whole life, but always preparing for the time he would take his place among the English aristocracy. He’s had tutors aplenty and constant instruction from his father but there are holes in his education and that leaves him floundering.

Cue the horse-mad girl next door. Bianca has had free reign of the Stildon stables in the absence of a Viscount. Her first encounter with Hudson is hysterical!!! And really showcases their personalities. Sheer brilliance! So these two set up a friendship of sorts and agree to help each other source out suitable spouses…and you know how that’s going to go, right?

Into drawing rooms and ballrooms and early morning rides chock full of cutting dialogue. Oh, my, how this author knows how to wield a witty turn of phrase!  Makes for a delicious read.

There’s even a bit of danger — and an evil (well, almost evil) stepmother to contend with. And a lot of soul searching to do as Hudson and Bianca struggle to find their own personal version of a happily-ever-after. I love the way Hunter has included a gentle, but significant faith thread as both hero and heroine discover the joys — and fears — that come with sacrificing their will in favor of seeking out God’s plan for their lives.

I listened to the audible edition of this book narrated by Anne Marie Gideon who did a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. I’m still grinning madly and might just have to give this one a relisten — especially since book two, Winning the Gentleman (yay, one of my hero requests!) doesn’t release until April 2021!!!!!!!!

Oh…oh…ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh….I forgot to mention that there are a bunch of exciting cameos from characters of previous Hunter books in this one. It was so much fun to spot them…I might have squealed a time or two. Love fun bonuses like that.

Letters for Phoebe + Giveaway

When Phoebe starts receiving anonymous letters, she never once thinks the most irresponsible man in London is her correspondent. Or that she will fall in love with him.

Phoebe Kimball grew up believing in love, but after failing to find a gentleman capable of capturing her heart, she has turned more practical than romantic. She is determined to find a husband in London this Season. If only the annoying Mr. Fenwick would stop appearing every time she sets her cap at someone! When an anonymous letter arrives warning her that her current target is unsuitable marital material, Phoebe begins a relationship with the letter writer that promises something more than a practical alliance.

Griffin Fenwick does not usually care for women on the hunt for a husband, but Miss Kimball’s quick wit and refusal to admit she enjoys his company intrigues him. When he realizes the gentlemen on her list of eligible bachelors is full with scoundrels, he warns her the only way he can – through a letter. As he comes to know Phoebe better, he soon realizes he wishes to put his own name on her list. If only she liked Griffin as much as she liked her anonymous correspondent.

When Phoebe realizes its been Griffin writing her all along, will she put aside practicality for love, or spurn Griffin for even trying to woo her?

Letters for Phoebe is the first in a series of books about five friends. The next four novellas will be written by authors Joanna Barker, Megan Walker, Heidi Kimball, and Arlem Hawks.

My Review:

published in 2020

Short, sweet, and full of flirtation and banter and some word dueling! Griffin and Phoebe are a contrast in character and outlook and poor Griff does not make a good first impression. Or second. Or third. Or…well, let’s just say it takes a while for Phoebe to warm up to him. Which is absolutely fine because it means more delightful misunderstandings to wade through.

The first book in a multi-authored Regency series — Promise of Forever After — where certain young ladies face challenges during their quest at finding true love. A cute prelude introduces the pact they make at the end of their finishing school days and Phoebe makes for a splendid start to the series.

Promised + Giveaway

Margaret Brinton keeps her promises, and the one she is most determined to keep is the promise to protect her heart.

Worwickshire, England, 1812

Fooled by love once before, Margaret vows never to be played the fool again. To keep her vow, she attends a notorious matchmaking party intent on securing the perfect marital match: a union of convenience to someone who could never affect her heart. She discovers a man who exceeds all her hopes in the handsome and obliging rake Mr. Northam.

There’s only one problem. His meddling cousin, Lord Williams, won’t leave Margaret alone. Condescending and high-handed, Lord Williams lectures and insults her. When she refuses to give heed to his counsel, he single-handedly ruins Margaret’s chances for making a good match — to his cousin or anyone else. With no reason to remain at the party, Margaret returns home to discover her father has promised her hand in marriage — to Lord Williams.

Under no condition will Margaret consent to marrying such an odious man. Yet as Lord Williams inserts himself into her everyday life, interrupting her family games and following her on morning walks, winning the good opinion of her siblings and proving himself intelligent and even kind. Margaret is forced to realize that Lord Williams is exactly the type of man she’d hoped to marry before she’d learned how much love hurt. When paths diverge and her time with Lord Williams ends, Margaret is faced with her ultimate choice: keep the promises that protect her or break free of them for one more chance at love. Either way, she fears her heart will lose.

My Review:

This one gives me all kinds of Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth vibes and I loved every second. The banter, the misunderstandings, the deliberate verbal barbs….sigh, I was in bibliophile euphoria. And the cast of secondary characters are just as strong as the hero and heroine, which made for some lively interactions. And lots of humour too.

Another Grumpy/Sunshine trope only in reverse with the heroine being the grump, which was all kinds of fun too, though sometimes I wanted to shake some sense into Margaret. But she is bound by the societal norms of the day so I guess I can understand some of her reasoning…but how she held off from falling for Lord Williams for so long….honestly, I have no idea. I was a goner pretty early on. And then the ‘plot twist’ happened and I was ‘whhhhaaaatttttt????’

Another Regency triumph and a new-to-me author to pursue!

I listened to the audio edition which was narrated by Justine Eyre. She’s an amazing performer and one of my favourites to listen to so I was all kinds of happy with both the story and the delivery.

The Art of Victory + Giveaway

Diana Donovan was raised aboard a naval ship on a steady diet of war strategy, so when her orphaned friend, Lucy, is denied a perfectly respectable love match by her controlling guardian, Diana sees an opportunity to put her battle knowledge to use in service of a deserving friend.

But Marmaduke Russell is not the middle-aged curmudgeon Diana is expecting. He is a maddeningly cool, unmarried gentleman who seems uniquely able to parry her tactics — and infuse her with even more determination to win. As battle ensues, though, it becomes clear that there may be more hearts in the balance than just Lucy’s.

My Review:

I’m a tad shy of giddy over discovering a new-to-me author writing in one of my favourite genres! And this is the first book in a new series, so what an opportune time to jump onto the Martha Keyes bandwagon! I’ll be singing her praises with gusto forevermore, because this book is that good.

An enemies to more trope written in spectacular fashion. It’s a brilliant battle of wills that is only exceeded by a battle of wits — and the two combined make for such a fun read! If I wasn’t laughing hysterically, I was furiously fanning myself and then, when things really heated up, it was all swoon and repeat until the very end. My fainting couch got a real workout so I suggest you dust yours off and check the springs before starting in on The Art of Victory. (Such a clever title too!)

So, I just checked the author’s webpage and she not only writes Regency Romances — she writes Scottish (Historical) ones too. Eeeeeepppppp!!!! I’ll be happily playing catch up for awhile.

Lord Farleigh and Miss Frost + Giveaway

An Irish miss and a duke’s son have little in common, but Christmas at the castle has a way of bringing the most unlikely people together.

Isleen Frost wishes her family had stayed in Dublin for Christmas but understands it would have been folly to decline an invitation to the Duke of Montfort’s Christmastide house party. Isleen refuses to allow the opulent castle and powerful duke to impress her. But the duke’s eldest son, Lord Farleigh, is another matter entirely.

Raised as the heir to a duke, Simon Dinard, Lord Farleigh, has learned to project a calm self-assurance despite an inner fear he will never be as confident a leader as his father. When a friendly wager and a spirited Irish lady challenge all his unspoken thoughts, he determines to prove her wrong — and ignore the growing attraction between them.

Christmas celebrations at the castle are always full of surprises, but Isleen and Simon are not at all prepared for the feelings the season inspires between them. An Irish miss and a duke’s son have no business falling involve. But the magic of sleigh rides, snow-covered hills, and mistletoe might change their minds…

This novel is a sweet Regency romance and can be read as a stand-alone, though readers of the previous books will enjoy seeing old friends again.

My Read:

It’s official: I’m so smitten with Sally Britton that I read a Christmas book way out of season. 🙂 However…I did read it around St. Patrick’s Day and the heroine is Irish so I’m somewhat seasonal. Love all the historical details in the Christmas celebrations — including both Irish and English customs. So, this would make a fabulous Christmas read…if you can wait that long to enjoy it!

And, oh my, the banter! It’s that much more fun with some Irish sass added in! Love the way the romance develops between Simon and Isleen. She has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about the British aristocracy (and with good reason, I might add…says the Irish reader!) and Simon’s serious nature makes him appear standoffish which she misinterprets…and that’s the beginning of a whole lot of fun!

This is the fourth book in the Castle Clairvoir Romances but can absolutely be read as a standalone. However, the whole gang has gathered together for Christmas so there’s fun shenanigans with all the previous heroes and heroines too which was all kinds of fun. (I’ve read book two and three, still need to read book one.)

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of Lord Farleigh and Miss Frost, expertly narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd. Love the accents (!) and the zest she brings to the story in her performance.

A Companion for the Count + Giveaway

Miss Emma Arlen’s position as a companion never included distracting her mistress’s suitors, but when a handsome Italian ambassador arrives determined to find an English bride, Emma happily takes up the cause.

Emma Arlen has spent a decade as a member of the duke’s family, in the position of companion to his daughter and ward to the duke himself. She would do anything to show her support to the ducal family for their love and kindness. When Lady Josephine begs Emma to distract a most determined Sicilian suitor, she agrees at once. How hard can it be to keep one man entertained for a few weeks?

Luca, the Conte di Atella, left his home in the newly formed Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under the direct orders of King Ferdinand I. Luca’s duty as ambassador to England includes everything from negotiating better trade agreements to strengthening the bonds between the two nations. If possible, by marrying a lady of high birth. When he optimistically sets his sights on Lady Josephine, Miss Arlen consistently disrupts his plans. The more time that passes, the more he realizes he does not mind at all.

Continually in the conte’s company, Emma recognizes in him a spirit of adventure and nobility like she has never witnessed before. When the time comes for him to go, will she be able to part with him and keep her heart intact?

As the second stand-alone novel in a new series by author Sally Britton, this story continues the Clairvoir Castle romances. This is a light-hearted, romantic series set in the Regency period.

My Review:

Sooooo romantical!!!!!! I mean, Luca!!!! I dare you not to swoon when he makes an appearance. (Cue the fainting couch alert…and grab the smelling salts while you’re at it.) He’s so earnest and determined to bring honour to his country so he’s a bit…unyielding…solemn…sometimes intense?…in his approach to wooing the duke’s daughter. He even makes a list which is all kinds of fun! But no worries, this is in no way a love triangle kind of romance. Josie wants nothing to do with courting and matrimony and enlists Emma’s aid in thwarting the Count’s dogged attempts.

Watching Emma and Luca slowly fall for each other was all kinds of delicious! Sweetly tender one moment and then laugh inducing the next. The banter shines in this novel (one of my favourite things in a Regency) and it’s made even better by the occasional language misstep that adds a whole other dimension to the bantering. So witty and clever!

This is the second Clairvoir Castle romance but easily reads as a standalone. The duke’s family and their large estate feature in each novel, creating the backdrop for true love to finds its way in each story. The secondary characters are written in such a way that they easily feel familiar no matter if you’ve met them in the first book, or one of the later ones. And they are so much fun! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

I listened to the audible book narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd who did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life (including the count’s dreamy accent.) I thoroughly enjoyed my listening experience.

Beneath His Silence + Giveaway

Will seeking justice lead to her own demise?

A Gothic Style Regency Romance from a promising young author

Second daughter of a baron — and a little on the mischievous side — Ella Pemberton is no governess. But the pretence is a necessity if she ever wishes to get inside of Wychkhorn Manor and attain the truth. Exposing the man who killed her sister is all that matters.

Lord Sedgewick knows there’s blood on his hands. Lies have been conceived, then more lies but the price of truth would be too great. All he has left now is his son — and his hatred. Yet as the charming governess invades his home, his safe cocoon of bitterness begins to tear away.

Could Ella, despite the lingering questions of his guilt, fall in love with such a man? Or is she falling prey to him — just as her dead sister?

My Review:

Well, I’m gobsmacked by this debut novel! Very Jane Eyre-esque with Gothic undertones. Lots of emotional angst and high drama that peaks by the end. And so much character growth! Which is a good thing because Ella’s obsession with seeking vengeance over her sister’s death was a bit hard to take in the beginning. She is full of self-righteous indignation and preconceived assumptions based on her late father’s consuming hatred. And now she feels compelled to carry on his crusade to destroy Lord Sedgewick.

If you like brooding heroes you will definitely be drawn to poor Henry. He fits the Mr. Rochester archetype — with one major difference. Henry constantly leans into his faith. Imperfectly, maybe, because he still struggles with bitterness and unforgiveness but he never turns away from God. Very realistic and relatable.

So, Ella arrives at Wychkhorn Manor under false pretences, intent on exposing the dark truth about Lord Sedgewick. She isn’t prepared to fall in love with her young charge — the nephew she’s never met before (gah, and I wanted to know why — the family had no contact with the older sister, didn’t even attend the wedding and that was never explained. My mind is working overtime thinking up credible possibilities.) Of course, Ella is about as ungovernessy a governess as they come. She’s also opinionated and impulsive which makes for some interesting cutting-edge banter. And I do so love great banter in my Regencies!

Very much an enemies to more trope and I love the way the author developed the relationship that grows between Henry and Ella. It’s all two steps forward, one step back and full of self-doubts and erroneous assumptions. You never met two more reluctant would-be-lovers! And I enjoyed every second!

And the Manor had a character all its own. Steeped in tragedy and hiding so many secrets! I was on tenterhooks the whole read trying to piece everything together. From the closed mouth servants to Ella’s feelings of being watched, to…well, I can’t say any more without posting spoilers…but, eeeeppp, deliciously mysterious.

I listened to the audible edition of Beneath His Silence and enjoyed Anna Flosnik’s narration. Her performance enhanced the Gothic vibes and kept me riveted.

Sir Andrew and the Authoress + Giveaway

Lady Josephine, the duke’s eldest daughter, has a secret. When her brother’s horrid best friend discovers what she’s been hiding up in the castle tower, she has no choice to take him into her confidence.

As the daughter of a duke, Lady Josephine has a long list of responsibilities, and an even longer list of things she must never do to dishonour the family name. Josephine knows exactly which side becoming an author falls upon, but she’s determined to try her hand at it anyway. For months she has worked on her novel in secret, writing chapter after chapter of intrigue and romance. Unfortunately for Josephine, her sworn enemy stumbles upon her secret.

Sir Andrew Wycomb’s close relationship to the Duke of Montfort’s family and heir gives him more than one advantage in life. His loyalty to the family is absolute, even if he finds at least one of its members an annoyance. He and Lady Josephine have never seen eye-to-eye. But when he discovers that she’s written a novel upon a subject she knows nothing about, he cannot help but sympathize with her dream. This creates an unlikely ceasefire between them.

But things at the castle are always changing, and when a determined suitor arrives to court Josephine, Andrew has to decide which secrets he’s going to keep. Especially when he discovers the one he’s kept even from himself — that perhaps he doesn’t find Josephine an annoyance at all. In fact, she is quite charming. The more time they spend together, the more he hopes she will realize they aren’t enemies, and they could be so much more.

As the third stand-alone novel in this series by author Sally Britton, this story continues the Claivoir Castle romances. This is a light-hearted, sweet romance series set during the Regency era in England.

My Review:

D-e-l-i-g-h-t-f-u-l!!! I’m still in post-read giddy euphoria. And isn’t that cover glorious? (And opportune because I’m trying to read green covers throughout March, my nod to St. Patrick’s Day.) Believe me, the story inside is just as alluring!

While the third book in Britton’s Claivoir Castle romances, it definitely reads well as a standalone. This is my introduction to the series and I think the connection between books lies in the duke’s estate as a location where true loves meet. Which is all kinds of wonderful! I’m already attached to a few gentlemen I’m hoping will get their own romances in future books. So, great job hooking this reader.

This is an enemies to more romance which is drawn out to Cheshire grinning perfection. Hmm, maybe I should say frenemies to more because Andrew and Josie really enjoy their taunting and teasing. Bantering at its finest with all kinds of undercurrents. Me thinks he protests too much and she is too easily riled…could it be there is something more than annoyance fueling their repartee? Something like…love?! Gasp! Fainting couch and smelling salts alert! Along with many laugh-out-loud warnings (in case you read or listen in public places, like I do.)

I listened to the expertly narrated edition and Jessica Elisa Boyd’s wonderful performance just added to my overall enjoyment of this Regency Romance. Must read more Sally Britton. Now!!!
