Resort to Murder + Giveaway

My Review:

Okay — first of all — cutest cozy cover ever!!! I feel like I can walk right in, nudge that little Yorkie over a wee bit and settle down for a sublime reading session! And that pretty package absolutely reflects all the delightfully cozy details you expect from a cozy mystery. 🙂

Retreating from personal drama, Emmy has returned to her family’s lakeside resort to regroup, only the peace and quiet and familial support she craves goes by the wayside when she finds a dead body on the property! Suddenly her quiet retreat turns into police investigating her father and the family’s livelihood in jeopardy. What’s a daughter to do but put on her deerstalker hat and go sleuthing?!

‘Resort to Murder’ is a fabulous debut novel! Annie McEwen has an engaging writer’s voice and a compelling story to tell. I love the Cooper family dynamics (such a cozy draw) and Emmy’s besties, Whitney and Marcus-with-the-mullet are a hoot! Their investigative skills aren’t quite finely honed, but what they lack in finesse, they make up with enthusiasm. And the cottagey resort setting is so appealing! (and perfect for a summer read.)

The well crafted plot kept me guessing (though I got there in the end. Yay me!) and I really like the way our amateur sleuths played nice with law enforcement. The detective on the case was a long time friend of Emmy’s dad and I liked his compassionate approach to the investigation. Of course our plucky heroine is too impatient to wait for the police to do their thing and a new literary amateur sleuth is born!

And — eeeeep — there’s a sweet romance brewing with a teen crush all grown up and that makes my romance lovin’ heart sooooo happy!

And — double eeeeeppppp!!! — the second book in the ‘Northwoods Mystery’ series is already out. ‘Dead, White and Blue’ (these titles!!!!) is definitely going to make it’s way onto my summer reading list.

My Review:

This series just keeps getting better and better! I love the way we’ve seen so much growth in Annalee over these three books. She is more sure of herself, clearer in her purpose, more resolute in her faith. And she needs to be all that and more as she faces some of the toughest situations she’s experienced since arriving in Denver.

The author incorporates historical facts with unflinching honesty. No sugar coating here as Annalee seeks justice for an unknown murder victim. Racism, violence and corruption brings danger at every turn…and from unexpected places. It’s brutal and confounding – especially as Annalee is confronted by the social bigotry within her own Black community.

This is the kind of story you feel your way through. It’s impossible to be a detached observer. I lived every heartbreaking, infuriating and gut-wrenching moment right along with Annalee and Eddie and Pastor Jack and Mrs. Mason and all the people I hold so dear. And, oh my goodness, the cameo appearance of a revered historical figure who counsels Annalee and brings such hope….I got goosebumps!!!

The mystery is complex but Annalee is relentless and has the backing of loyal friends and unexpected strangers. It’s layered in tragedy and deceit, perpetuated by legions of ‘good people’ who chose to do nothing while atrocities were committed. A mystery with history and heart — the kind of novel that changes a reader for the better by the time she reaches the end.

I listened to the excellent audible edition narrated by Zakiya Young. She brought such energy and enthusiasm to the story and enhanced my ‘reading’ pleasure that much more. She has narrated the entire series so far and these books will definitely be ones I listen to again. Keeper shelf material for sure.

Between a Flock and a Hard Place

Together, they must figure out what really happened to Mrs. Smetkamp…and what to do with all these turkeys!

My Review:

I adore Meg Langslow. I love her wild and whacky family, her quirky neighbours, the town of Caerphilly with all its Southern charm and the sheer madcap mayhem that ensues in every book. And, of course, there’s murder. I mean, really, what more can you ask from a cozy mystery? Oh — and the pun-y titles! The books are worth collecting just for those titles alone!

In fact, I am so enamoured with this series that it’s become an annual reread, well, re-listen, for me. I divide the books by 12 and read…er, listen, to 2 or 3 a month (saving all the Christmas books for last, of course.) This is my fourth year and I’m still as enchanted as the first time I met Meg and company!

I contribute some of my fascination with all things Langslow to narrator Bernadette Dunne. She has become the voice, well voices really, of this series, bringing distinctive qualities to each character that are consistent with every book! And her comedic beats are priceless. I get the feeling that she is getting just as much enjoyment out of the story as I am and that feeling is contagious…hence my compulsion to revisit each book every year. A brilliant author/narrator team!

‘Between a Flock and a Hard Place’ is #35(!) and held me gleefully spellbound all the way through. Lots of familiar characters — and I love how Grandfather is still going strong though he is well over 100 now. Spike too, he’s too ornery to die. 🙂 Absurd situations that seem downright normal for Caerphilly kick off a rollicking riot of twists and turns, high drama, and lots of laughs. And the way the town pulls together in times of adversity is inspiring! Just all kinds of feel good, heartwarming hilarity – the perfect cozy mix!

If you like the hint of a Gothic vibe (aka classic Phyllis A. Whitney) then ‘Refuge on Crescent Hill’ is the read for you. So atmospheric right from the opening page with Camden in desperate straits, heading to her childhood haven and the warmth of her grandmother’s arms. Only her grandmother is dead and the ‘home’ she remembers is a decaying mansion as broken as she feels.

And the house is either haunted or invaded by someone other than herself though no one takes her seriously. And there are so many secrets! Decades of them, all surrounding Camden’s family. And strangers eager to buy the house and the land…some for altruistic reasons, some for nefarious ones. And the town watching every move Camden makes. Sooooooooo scrumptiously mysterious. Layers of villainy to unmask and family history to uncover. Plus a light romance to swoon over. The perfect escape read.

Hammers and Homicide

My Review:

Super excited about this new cozy mystery series! All the cozy vibes are amazing — from the quirky small town to Dawna’s ‘old timey’ hardware store to her wonderful relationship with her daughter, April. Worth the read just for those elements but then a murder happens and things get even more interesting.

Dawna and April may be amateur sleuths on their first case, but they are savvy ones and I love the camaraderie they have with the police. It’s a nice balance of respect for the information they uncover and ‘don’t mess with my investigation’ with some humour thrown in.

The perfect mix of cozy and mystery with characters it’s easy to care about made ‘Hammers and Homicide’ a compulsive read for me. I can’t wait for the next ‘Hometown Hardware Mystery’ to release. Please let it be soon!!! This is definitely going to be a bingeable series!

Does one good turn deserve a murder?

Despite all her good intentions to focus on a healthy lifestyle and leave crime solving to the professionals, Andi Grace Scott has run right smack into another investigation–literally. Who’d have thought caring for stray cats and a healthy morning beach run could lead to murder?

Andi Grace has found another body and a young woman who needs help. Solving this puzzle will come with a cost. This time, catching the killer will require Andi Grace to confront her past relationships and truths about her deceased mother.

My Review:

This Low Country Dog Walker series is fabulous! Definitely should be read in order for the progression of Andi Grace’s backstory as well as relationship developments — including secondary characters. I love Andi Grace and her crew and this small island town. Feels like a beach getaway every read.

But this time there’s a body on the beach and Andi Grace is on the case. Bwahaha! She just can’t help herself. Some might call her nosy, but I like to think of her as having a curious mind. You know what they say about curiosity though…and there are some tense moments when Andi Grace is in serious danger before this mystery is solved.

Luckily she is on good terms with law enforcement in the area (more or less) and her protective boyfriend tries to keep an eye out for her (try being the operative word.) Because Andi Grace is tenacious and once she is focused on a puzzle she is relentless. I figured out parts of the mystery but not all so there was one gasp-out loud moment for me towards the end. Love when that happens.

There’s some lovely, light romance including a very swoonworthy ending that had me all twitterpated! I’m so grateful that the first three books in this series are available in audio format now. I’m really enjoying Meg Price’s narration. Hoping the rest of the series will follow — otherwise I’ll need to hunt them down in paperback ’cause I need more Andi Grace and company!

My Review:

Seriously, how did I not know there was a whole reimagined fairy-tale mystery series roaming around in bibliophile land?! Aptly titled ‘The Ever After Mysteries’ and Chautona Havig’s ‘The Last Gasp’ is the first book and my introduction to the series.

The book cover sets the tone with the campy, atmospheric ‘classic mystery’ influence which the story carries on. This reads very much like a golden age mystery. It’s set in the right era and I love the author’s use of the ‘current’ slang to add authenticity to the time and setting.

I’m not a Hollywood fan in this decade but, ironically, I had a huge fascination for the industry in it’s infancy. Did an extensive high school project on silent movies so this turned into an unexpectedly nostalgic read for me. 🙂

So, we have Hollywood glam vs poor working girl which lends itself beautifully to the Cinderella detailing…only not in a predictable way. I love how the author included all those beloved fairy tale elements in such a topsy turvy manner. They cropped up unexpectedly throughout the story and I got a bookish thrill every single time. Such fun. And so clever!

The mystery was pretty easy to solve (perhaps because of the fairy tale element) but I had a great time watching Gary and Cinda piecing together the clues. And, for an author who claims to not like romance, this one is pretty sighworthy!

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition to ‘The Last Gasp’, narrated by Christa DelSorbo.

My Review:

Intriguing characters and plot. Jonathan’s backstory in particular was — whoa — unexpected. And the historical details on the inner workings of turn of the century New York City were so interesting! A brilliant backdrop for the mystery.

True Confession: I abhor dentists. Oh, I’m sure they are lovely people when they are not wielding instruments of torture but…shudder. Visiting the dentist is at the top of my ‘procrastinate as long as possible’ list so, I was reluctant to read this book at first, the heroine being a (whimper) dentist and all. But then my library got a copy and I found myself checking it out, though I’ll admit the poor dear languished on the TBR pile for a week or two, okay, nearly three. But then I devoured it in a day and not only because I was chasing down the due date! I was riveted…

Even though the opening scene occurs in a dentist’s office with Dr. Katherine Schneider in the middle of gruesome dental procedure. But oh my, what a clever way to hint at clues that become the foundation to uncovering a lethal criminal conspiracy.

And I can’t say a whole lot more than that without posting spoilers but this is definitely the kind of story a reader can lose herself in. From the sometimes astonishing historical details (be sure to read the author’s note at the end) to the desperate search for the mastermind behind a deadly plot — well, I was hooked. With Katherine and Jonathan’s romance adding another level of angst to the plot. Camden makes them work for their happily ever after which makes it all the more satisfying when we reach the end!

‘While the City Sleeps’ is the first book in the ‘Women of Midtown’ series and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store of us in the next book! Can’t come out soon enough for me (especially since it likely won’t include any dentists as MCs Bwahahaha!)

Dog-Gone Deadly

My Review:

This cozy mystery series ticks all the boxes for me. Overcomer heroine, intriguing mystery that was difficult to figure out, awesome secondary characters (including the critters) and there’s even some romance. Oh — and I love the light touches of faith sprinkled throughout.

Like most cozy mysteries, this series would be best read in order. The first book covers some important backstory about Andi Grace and her family and gently introduces the romantic element. It’s also a great introduction to this small coastal town and Andi Grace’s dog walking business.

‘Dog-Gone Dead’ takes off where ‘Bite the Dust’ left off. It’s some months later and Andi Grace and her best friend are getting ready to launch their new business venture when a dead body shows up in the mulch (of course it does!) 🙂 And since Andi Grace’s brother becomes a suspect, she’s all in for solving the crime.

One of the wonderful things about this heroine is her fierce loyalty to her family and friends. It makes her a tenacious amateur sleuth who doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘quit.’ She’s relatively smart about her investigating though and works with the police…Well, that mostly means they get crazy frustrated by her sleuthing and read her the riot act while taking her ‘clues’ under consideration. I’ll admit, this mystery stumped me. I was waffling between three likely suspects and finally settled on the wrong one!

I listened to the audible edition of this book narrated by Meg Price and loved it! Hoping the rest of the series becomes available in audio format as well.

Eeeepppp! How did I not know about this series? It’s both a cozy mystery and Christian Fiction! And there’s even a romance! That’s my reading dream, right there. Plus the whole series just became available on audible so guess what I’ll be binge listening to?

Absolutely love the way Layton sets the stage for this series. The cozy part of this cozy mystery is sweet perfection. Vivid descriptions of the SC Low Country made me feel like I was there and Andi Grace’s dog walking profession is my dream job! I appreciate the depth in character back stories — especially Andi Grace — and her personal mystery is just as compelling as the murder mystery.

Fabulous meet cute with an enemies to more vibe and an intriguing list of suspects kept the plot moving and me riveted. Plus, there’s light touches of faith interspersed throughout. So excited to dive into book #2 of the ‘Low Country Dog Walker Mystery’ series soon!
