The Second Story Bookshop + Giveaway

Shelby Thatcher adores working in the charming small-town bookshop her grandmother opened years ago. As the adversaries are forced to work together, Gram’s beyond-the-grave scheme is working–Shelby’s old feelings for Gray begin to resurface. But the problems that destroyed their relationship before still remain, and a new one surfaces–one that threatens Gram’s beloved bookshop. Is their love doomed to fail again, or will they find a way to make it work this time around?

My Review:

A Second Chance Romance set in a bookish backdrop? Yes please! Even though Shelby and Gray’s love story includes a…gasp…dreaded love triangle! I almost gave up before the story really started but it’s Denise Hunter and if I can’t trust her with my fragile LT resistant heart, who can I trust? And truly, as far as love triangles go this one wasn’t as angsty as it could have been. I could explain why but then I’d be sharing spoilers so…guess you’ll have to trust me just the way I had to trust the author.

Poignant and tender and steeped in emotion, this novel brought on all the feels, from fuming to swooning and everything in between. Kept me invested right through to the end. A high school romance gone terribly wrong and Shelby’s been nursing some significant resentment ever since. Meanwhile, Gray has been trapped in his regrets. Their coming together once again results in an explosion of mixed emotions and the opportunity to finally come to terms with the past.

Hunter explores the complex issue of bullying – both then and now – with stomach churning precision. Gah! I felt for Gray and everything he had to endure. I appreciated the snippets of storytelling from their past that set the stage for the present. It explained so much and helped me feel sympathetic to both hero and heroine. And I love the way Gram’s gentle support reaches out to both of them after her death. Such a wonderful legacy of love!

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of ‘The Second Story Bookshop’ narrated by Kim Churchill. I felt like she had a good grasp of the characters’ personalities which carried over into her performance, making me appreciate them, and their story, all the more.

The Summer of You and Me + Giveaway

The event rattles Maggie, stirs up impossible questions, and sends Josh and her on a quest to discover the man’s true identity. But their search ends up raising more questions than answers–and soon Maggie isn’t sure she wants those answers at all.

My Review:

Angst-riddled and full of surprises. In some ways this contemporary romance plays out as I thought it would…until it doesn’t. Love the way Hunter kept me balancing on an emotional tightrope all the way through. I’m still dizzy from the nosebleed heights and the occasional free fall! Brilliantly executed. Compelling read. BUT, make sure to have some (or a lot) of comfort chocolate on hand.

Loved the way the story unfolds. It’s almost lazy at times occasionally punctuated by a sense of urgency that set my pulse rate soaring. The friendship-to-more developing relationship is both precarious and hopeful. So. Many. Complications!!! Not the least of which is Josh being Maggie’s deceased husband’s brother. Yikes! Honestly, it’s my faith in Denise Hunter’s storytelling that convinced me to pick up this book despite that unusual situation!

Of course she deals with that particular issue brilliantly and weaves a captivating story full of raw emotion and soaring hope…as well as that longed for happily ever after. (Phew!)

I enjoyed listening to Kim Churchill’s narration of ‘The Summer of You and Me’. She has become a familiar voice in my audio reads and I love the way she builds upon the author’s words in order to deliver a satisfying and memorable listening experience.

Before We Were Us + Giveaway

She can’t remember. He can’t forget.

Seven months ago, after graduating with a hospitality degree, city girl Lauren Wentworth travelled to rural New Hampshire to become temporary manager of Pinehaven Lodges, a rustic family-owned resort. What started as just a springboard to her dream job became so much more when she fell in love with the owner’s son Jonah, the Landry family, and her simple but rewarding position at the resort. When Lauren wakes up in the hospital, she only recalls her first couple months at the resort. However, according to everyone around her, she’s now madly love with Jonah and has forfeited the dream job awaiting her in Boston. It seems impossible to believe she could’ve made such drastic changes in a matter of months!

Jonah is heartbroken at her memory loss and determined to help Lauren remember the deep feelings they’ve developed for one another. But Lauren isn’t sure she wants to remember falling in love with someone she doesn’t even like or giving up her dream career for a rustic resort in Podunk, New Hampshire.

Especially when Dr. Carson is now available. . .

My Review:

What an interesting approach to a romance! I’ve never read anything like it and, wow, just upped the angst factor so much and had my emotions tied up in knots so that I was completely invested in the outcome. I mean, I knew there had to be a happily ever after, but what was that going to look like?! Rabid reading (well, listening in my case) ensued in order to find out!

So, the very first chapter reads like the happily ever after epilogue of a traditional romance. Jonah and Lauren are crazy in love and soooooo sweet together, I was already swooning. Then…bam! (and I mean that quite literally) Lauren falls from a ladder, conks her head, and loses several months worth of her memories. Like the falling in love with Jonah months!

She wakes up in the hospital thinking it’s April when it’s actually Labor Day weekend. And back in April, Jonah was the enemy. I mean she really didn’t like Jonah and with good reason because he was quite the brooding grump. And, oh my heart hurt, because, of course Jonah is still madly in love with Lauren, only she can’t stand him! So, an enemy-to-more/second chance romance! I think Denise Hunter invented a new trope!

And this is a bit of a dual timeline novel too, because Hunter takes us back to the falling-in-love-the-first-time moments through Jonah’s memories. All, while he is trying to win Lauren’s heart for a second time! Oh. My. Stars! This was soooooo good. Beautifully written, incredibly crafted. And that ending! Unexpected!

Kim Churchill did a fantastic job narrating Lauren and Jonah’s story. She captured their personalities and emotions perfectly. I really enjoyed my listening time and would definitely recommend the audio edition of ‘Before We Were Us.’

P.S. If you are as love triangle phobic as I am, have no fear, that tease in the synopsis really doesn’t have any bite. You can read easy on that angst score…though there are plenty of other tumultuous dilemmas you can stew over.

My Review:

Well now, I’m throughly charmed and in a post-read tizzy after finishing this delicious contemporary romance. If ever a book screamed ‘beach read’ this one does — from the pretty cover right through to the very last page.

And, oh my! Two of my favourite tropes — enemies to more and fake dating — written to sweet (and angsty) perfection. With liberal doses of humour mixed in. Such a fun read, though some deeper topics are covered as well which keep things realistically messy and just a bit desperate at times.

I’m not usually one for a movie star hero. The whole Hollywood scene isn’t something I care about at all. Or the social media hype that goes along with the rich and famous so, normally I would have passed over this novel BUT Denise Hunter is the author so….I decided to be brave. 🙂

And, wonders of wonders, I actually enjoyed the movie aspects of this novel. Hunter adds just enough details to feel authentic without the ‘Hollywood’ aspects overwhelming the story. Of course, the whole PR scheme screams ‘Hollywood’ but it plays out brilliantly with lots of lovely ‘getting to know you’ kind of scenes to smile and swoon over. And then, when things really heat up — clear your fainting couch and keep your smelling salts handy because it’s not just the summer temps rising…until…well, let’s just say the author doesn’t make it too easy for Liam and Chloe to achieve their happily-ever-after.

I listened to the audio edition of Love, Unscripted (brilliant title tie-in by the way) narrated by Kathleen McInerney who amped up my ‘reading’ enjoyment all the more. She is a talented storyteller who brings characters to life in such a compelling way. Superb listening experience.

Wildflower Falls + Giveaway

Meanwhile, an abused horse tugs at his heart, Charlotte’s brother becomes a loyal friend, and the town of Riverbend Gap is getting some kind of strange hold over him. He’s always run from connections before, but this time leaving seems harder than ever before.

Both Charlotte and Gunner will have to be honest with others and themselves if they have any hope of the future they’re both starting to long for.

My Review:

I am a huge fan of an animal loving hero and horse whisperer Gunner Dawson ticks all the boxes…except for one: he’s commitment phobic. Thankfully Charlotte (and Denise Hunter) work on that so, while it’s a rocky ride, we do eventually reach a happily ever after!

While this is fourth in the Riverbend Gap series, it reads well as a standalone (I’ve only read the second book.) It does feature characters from the previous books in a pretty significant plot thread but in such a way that you don’t have to be familiar with the other stories. You’ll still get the same emotional impact if you come into the series as a newbie.

I have to say I was almost more invested in Charlotte’s search for her biological father than the romance. In fact, there’s a little hiccup involving a mild version of my most dreaded trope that had me squirming a bit. 🙂 But, my oh my, Charlottes’s struggles over finding her father and when to reveal herself to the brothers who haven’t a clue about her real identity just sucked me in and kept me reading. All kinds of angst — realistic and heartfelt.

There’s a central theme around fear and the way we can stagnate under it’s power. Both Gunner and Charlotte have let fear and uncertainty impact important decisions and their journeys are both painful and believable…and ultimately triumphant. I felt the faith elements were quite light, though, which was a bit of a disappointment.

If you can pair ‘heartwarming’ and ‘angst-riddled’ as descriptors for a book, then that’s what this one is. A captivating escape read.
