My Review:

An amazing and awe-inspiring read. Seriously good. It was so easy to lose myself in this new community of angels and humans that Kingsbury has created. The story generated goosebumps on top of goosebumps all the way through. I loved the way the reader gets a bird’s eye view of God’s miracles. How one action builds upon another, even though they are seemingly unrelated. A domino effect of blessings that testify of His love. Told from multiple viewpoints, some scenes are short, others longer but the impeccable pacing builds to a crescendo of a climax. A panoramic view of how heaven and earth combine to bring the healing power of redemption into our lives. A definite must read.

My Review:

Somehow the entire Mitford series has eluded me all these years but it just seemed so daunting to try and catch up. However, when I discovered that this eleventh book is set in Ireland featuring only two of the main characters (Father Tim and his his wife Cynthia) I figured it might be the perfect place to jump in. Plus I was looking for Irish themed reads for St. Patrick’s Day and this fit the bill.

I loved the way the author brought Ireland to life — from physical descriptions to the culture and history — I could almost hear the fire crackling and feel the moisture of a a grand soft day on my face. Definitely made me homesick.

Father Tim arrives on holiday but somehow becomes embroiled in multiple family dramas at the inn they are staying at. It must be the clerical collar. 🙂 I quite enjoyed the rambling feel of the story. Not one that I felt needed to be rushed through, but one I quietly enjoyed for a half hour or so each evening. There’s a bit of mystery complete with an old journal from the 1860s and a slew of interesting characters (which were sometimes hard to keep track of. ) Overall, an excellent introduction to the author’s storytelling style and her beloved Father Tim. I’m intrigued enough to back track and – shock! – start with the first Mitford book sometime later this year.

My Review:

What a thrill to be back in Stoney Ridge and meet up with so many beloved characters from the author’s previous series. ‘A Healing Touch’ could be read as a standalone, but I think readers familiar with some of the Stoney Ridge books, especially the ones featuring Dok, will appreciate this story so much more.

Dok was raised Amish but left the faith and her community to pursue a medical degree. Circumstances have brought her back to Stoney Ridge where her brother is the Bishop and she has an interesting mix of Amish and Englisch patients in her thriving Family Medicine practice. Dok is the kind of physician we’d all love to have – old-fashioned enough to still make house calls, caring enough (aka bossy enough) to push for the best outcomes for her patients, whether they want her to or not! And she has a creative approach to meet the needs of some of her most stubborn patients!

Mind you, Dok, knows a thing or two about stubbornness — just ask her husband! Love the insights we get into her married life (he’s the sheriff!) as they work their way through some tough situations. I might have cried at one point.

This story is told from three different women’s points of view. Dok, of course, and her busy practice and challenging home life; her receptionist, Annie, a young Amish woman who yearns for something more in her life, and Bee, Dok’s recently widowed patient who has just been given an unwelcome diagnosis.

There’s love and laughter, frustrations and tears — all woven together with the promise of divine hope and faith shared. An emotional journey realistically depicting a slice of real life.

My Review:

Classic, feel-good holiday fare.

‘The Christmas Cottage’ is all about second chances — for a storm-ravaged town as well as two world-weary souls who make their way back home after devastating circumstances leave them no choice. Dillon and Olivia haven’t seen each other in years but fate has brought them back to Miramar at just the right time.

This is as much the town’s story as it is theirs. Because Miramar is a community made up of overcomers. Good people willing to help in whatever capacity they can. And the town needs that help after weathering a bout of storms, floods and mudslides. Miramar is officially a disaster zone just days before Christmas.

Love the host of diverse secondary characters in this novel and the way they pull together in a time of adversity. When Dillon and Olivia get swept up in the cause, they both discover their unique talents are exactly what the town needs and, in serving others, they find their way to healing and second chances.

I listened to the audio edition and enjoyed Graham Winton’s portrayal of these characters. He really captured the spirit and hope in the story in his narration

My Review:

Phew! This one was a heartbreaker! I’m a bit of an emotional mess now that it’s all over. A vulnerable mix of aching and hope and everything in-between.

Kristy Cambron is known for writing complex dual timeline novels full of rich layers and important bits of history that should never be forgotten. She accomplishes that again with ‘The Italian Ballerina’ though I will admit to sometimes getting lost in the un-chronological yo-yoing in the past timeline. This might have been because I listened to the audible edition (expertly narrated by Barrie Kreinik by the way.) It probably would have helped to see the dates/places printed out every time we broke away from the present day. It’s not like there was a huge leap of decades — more like a 5-6 year span — but we’d be in 1943, then the next time in 1939 and then 1941 — and in the POV of two different characters so I was always scrambling to properly place the character and situations. I really enjoy dual timeline stories but I am finding that I enjoy them more when the historical story unfolds chronologically.

Amazed once again to discover yet another aspect of World War II that I knew nothing about. That an Italian hospital created a fictitious highly contagious sickness in order to hide Jews in quarantine wards is — well it sounds like it could only happen in fiction! And Cambron has cleverly woven it into a story that bridges decades and continents. How on earth does she keep it all straight in her mind as she writes?! Sheer genius!

I liked the contrast in the present day timeline. Not without its own emotional upheavals, but it was still lighter and served to highlight the powerful impact the choices of the past have on our present.

This book gutted me though — so not a light read but an important one.

My Review:

Epic Jaime Jo Wright! A bit of woo woo mystery with lots of eerie ambiance that you know has a sensible explanation but you just can’t figure it out. I was hooked from the opening line: “Sometimes death comes quietly.” Uh, yeah, I needed to read on!

Dual timelines — both with their own mystery — and I was invested in both equally. There’s also very light romance for both Greta and Kit…emphasis on the light though, but I liked the way it brings hope to the reader without shadowing the already murky waters of the mysteries.

And, oh, those mysteries! Blended to perfection by the end but made for a rabid read until then. I couldn’t put this book down though my poor eyes were screaming, “Rest! Rest! We need rest!” Huh, as if! And I was gobsmacked more than a few times — in both timelines.

Love the way the author wove in some humour amidst all the angst — especially in the current timeline. Kit is my kind of heroine. Impatient. Prickly. Stubborn.:

“Even now she could see Mom’s cautionary look that told Kit to breathe deep and let God be God.

“Maybe God wanted to work through her to slap Evan Fischer silly?” (p 55)

Bwahaha! Haven’t we all been there a time or two? But, whoa, this was also such an emotional read! I felt for both heroines and the complicated emotions churning within and around them. And the way they faced adversity with grit and courage and loyalty to those they loved. Made for such an intense read.

To sum up in one word: Unputdownable!

My Review:

A contemporary novel with a refreshing outlook. Sadie is single, in her early thirties, and wrestling with the expectations of marriage and motherhood that have thus far passed her by. It’s told entirely from Sadie’s first person point of view and has a bit of a journaling feel to the writing style.

We follow an introspective Sadie as she navigates a future void of ‘prospects’ in a church and family culture that is pushing her to ‘get out there’ and ‘find a husband. ‘ Lot’s of thought provoking examples of how not to be that busybody/nosy/opinionated person in a single woman’s life. 🙂

It’s also an empowering story, as Sadie learns to embrace her life as it is in the moment, instead of banking her happiness on a future that may or may not happen. It’s heartbreaking and funny and soul-stirring as we watch Sadie step out in faith to face new challenges on her own.

“I’m scared to consider what’s going to happen to my life if there are many more repeats of being a cardboard person in a cardboard life. A single woman who feels stuck and like her only hope to be found lies in the dream of a relationship.” (p 25)

As someone who has spent the majority of her adult years as a single woman in a family oriented church environment, I resonated with Sadie’s journey. And even though I’m a romantic at heart, and 99% of my reading hours end in happily ever afters, I still appreciated this Contemporary Fiction offering from Joanne Bischof.

Faith-fueled and full of hope, Sadie’s adventures are just beginning and I can’t wait to read more of them!

My Review:

It’s been a week since I finished listening to this book and I’m still deep in a stupefied bibliophile state. Epically struck dumb and blown away and…well, gobsmacked! So, I beg forgiveness ahead of time for my incoherent ramblings.

Random thoughts:

Astonishing! Just when I thought I had something figured out, I didn’t and there are so many ‘aha’ moments!

Which brings me to pacing. The tension between the two timelines is expertly drawn out. We slip seamlessly back and forth from past to present and back again, almost gently at first but, as the story progresses, the pacing picks up and the pressure increases until I was so wired up I wanted to rush to the end. (Of course, I didn’t because I am not the kind of reader who reads the last page first…no offence meant to anyone who is, of course. You read you, and I’ll read me. lol)

And the way the mystery of Poppy’s disappearance is developed in both timelines — brilliantly executed. Kept me on edge all the way through. The author is very clever in the way she teases hints without full reveals until the exact perfect time. Made the read that much more excruciatingly wonderful.

The setting gave me all kinds of thrills. My family vacationed around the Thousand Island area when I was a kid. No private island mansions for me, though every year we toured the islands and visited Bolt Castle and I imagined what it would have been like to live in my own island castle. 🙂 It’s not often that I get to read about a place I’ve actually visited so that was loads of fun.

I could say a whole lot more, but I don’t want to fall into spoiler territory. There is some romance which always makes me happy. And found family themes. There’s heartbreak — some almost too much to bear. At one point I wasn’t sure if I could go on but reading some reviews soothed my jangled nerves and I persisted and am so glad I did! Ecstatic, actually.

I listened to the audible edition of The Wings of Poppy Pendleton and Nancy Peterson’s narration paired with Melanie Dobson’s storytelling kept me captivated right to the very end.

My Review:

The most heartbreaking opening scene I’ve ever read put my emotions on high alert and they stayed there all the way through to the end. Such a complex story that hurdles Katie toward the unexpected. I was torn in two trying figure out what she should do — because you gotta know, there’s heartbreak and loss no matter what she chooses. So be prepared to become so invested in this story that you’ll have to let real-life things slide until you help get Katie sorted out.

Love the Beiler family and their tight-knit community, which includes a wise elderly English neighbour who is often the voice of reason and faith in the midst of all the confusion. I was often frustrated by Hannah’s words and actions — the way she wanted to push her own agenda on Katie. It was like she couldn’t empathize with her twin at all. But Bradford does a great job of uncovering the complicated emotional layers in their unique sisterly bond.

I listened to the audio edition of Portrait of a Sister and enjoyed narrator Amy Melissa Bentley’s incredible performance.

My Review:

Enthralling is an apt descriptor for this unputdownable novel. I stayed up until midnight (which might not sound late to you, but I’m of the early to be, early to rise mindset) to finish reading What Happens Next because…well…I needed to know what happened next! And, oh, what an incredibly emotional read! My heart felt like it had been yanked out of my chest and stomped on and then crammed back in — upside down and inside out. 🙂

The story is told from three points of view: Dora (the mother of the missing girl) and Faith (the childhood friend) in present day and from Heather in occasional flashbacks to that fateful summer. They flow together beautifully, building tension and plot while delivering emotional sucker punches left and right.

And there are so many layers to each character, which kept me on tenterhooks as well. I could sympathize with each of them and it was easy to lose myself in the drama unfolding right in front of me. At least, it felt like I was there, living out that long ago summer and this present day one, my heart on my sleeve.
