Naomi’s Christmas + Giveaway

Christmas is a time for new beginnings. But when a dutiful Amish woman’s life is turned upside down, she may have to risk her heart to get everything she’s always wanted in this charming Pleasant Valley novel.

Since her mother’s death, Naomi Esch has been devoted to caring for her father and siblings, sacrificing any hope of finding love or having a home of her own. Still, working at the local bakery and expanding her beekeeping business give Naomi a satisfying sense of purpose. Then, in the weeks before Christmas, her father announces his plans to remarry. He and his new wife need the house for themselves, leaving Naomi in need of a plan.

But opportunities soon come her way. A friend finds Naomi a place to stay, and widower Nathan King offers his sprawling farmland to Naomi to continue her business–on the condition that she helps take care of his children. The setup is so perfect that the community assumes a wedding will inevitably follow. But Naomi has vowed never to marry without love. And to Nathan she’s merely convenient help. Now, for those in Pleasant Valley, uniting these two stubborn souls may take a Christmas miracle.

My Review:

(published in 2012)

This one gave me all the feels. It’s an emotional blend of angst and heartwarming mixed up with the tender reverence of Christmas in an Amish community.

The seventh, and last, book in the Pleasant Valley series, Naomi’s Christmas can be read as a standalone. We do get lots of quality time visiting familiar friends from other books in the series — a great reconnect for PV fans and a lovely introduction for the newbies.

A gentle love story springs out of necessity and circumstance and not without a load of trouble thrown in. There were characters/situations that made my blood boil and I wanted to throw my book against the wall a time or two. (Rest assured, no books, pages or spines were harmed in the reading of this novel.) Happily, those scenes were countered by achingly sweet ones involving Nathan’s children. And then something seems to spark between our hero and heroine and that just stirs things up all the more.

A holiday tale centred around finding hope in second chances.

Most Wonderful Time + Giveaway

Gabe Lewis loves Christmas, just not as much as his eccentric mother who gave him and his siblings Christmas names. When he discovers that his new co-worker Shanée Mitchell wants nothing to do with the season, he makes it his mission to show her the true meaning.

But he never expected feelings to develop for the Air Force veteran. Can he take a chance that she feels the same way or miss the best gift of all?

My Review:

published in 2021

A sweet, heartwarming holiday romance that hits all the feels. And it’s a kinda grumpy sunshine trope, only in reverse with our heroine being the grump and our hero, the ray of sunshine. Which is all kinds of fun!

Shanée is an Air Force veteran struggling to find her place in a civilian world especially since she is living with chronic pain from an injury that ended her military career. So now she’s switching gears and she’s not entirely happy about it.

Cue our hero, Gabe, who is all about making Christmas bright and spreading good cheer. It’s in his DNA, passed down from his holiday loving mama. 🙂 Shanée, on the other hand, isn’t into Yuletide celebrations…at all! But Gabe intends to change all that. 🙂

Squealing over a heroine with glasses (she’s even wearing them on the cover!) Also appreciate a story centring around a character dealing with chronic pain and how that impacts her everyday life. And swooning over the way Gabe takes it all in stride. He’s compassionate, understanding and nonjudgemental — the perfect heartthrob hero!

And this Christmas romance has a significant faith thread that has me brimming over with joy. A perfect holiday read!

All’s Fair in Love and Christmas + Giveaway

Two workplace rivals. One festive competition. And a romance that upends it all.

Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham–Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they’ll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she’d be a contender in her company’s holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher’s life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year’s promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but the raise will help him as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she’s his rival, he can’t stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he’s afraid that if he can’t get his head on straight, the job isn’t the only thing he’ll end up losing to Mackenzie.

‘Tis the season for romance, faith, and humor–all wrapped up in this enchanting holiday rom-com from award-winning author Sarah Monzon.

My Review:

This is me gobsmacked — again — by a Sarah Monzon book that defies description. A rom/com with so much heart that it had me laughing and wincing and tearing up and cheering all the way through. My bibliophile heart was put through the paces 🙂 by all the Jeremy and Mackenzie shenanigans.

And there’s so much Christmas!!! Monzon captures the joy of the season to sweet perfection. When I first read the synopsis about the holiday competition in the office, I was worried things might get nasty and spiteful but I couldn’t have been more wrong! And I can’t say more than that without major spoilers, but the way this hero and heroine are drawn together in the midst of all the holiday hubbub is sheer swoony delight!

I haven’t read many books that feature a heroine (or hero) with a social anxiety disorder and the author certainly managed to capture all the nuances that go along with that condition. And she does it with such compassion and understanding– a lovely blend of humour and angst. I alternately chuckled and cringed over some of the situations Mackenzie found herself in — even blushed for her a time or two. And I love, love, love (!) how the author addressed the faith aspects of this part of Mackenzie’s story. Again, I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoilers, but I really connected with the profound truths shared. Amen and amen again! So uplifting and confirming.

Even though I had a paperback copy on hand, I couldn’t resist purchasing the audible edition as well. Loved CJ Bloom’s narration — definitely a Christmas story I will happily return to every year.

You Make It Feel Like Christmas + Giveaway

Starr Lewis reluctantly returns home for the holidays jobless, single, and not at all prepared to be dragged into her sister’s wedding activities–or to witness her sister’s marriage to Starr’s ex-boyfriend on Christmas Eve. But when her brother’s charming best friend, Waylon Emmerson, attends their family Thanksgiving, Starr begins to believe that maybe coming home isn’t so bad.

As Starr endures wedding preparations, she takes comfort in Waylon’s presence and finds the perfect distraction in helping him keep his late mother’s Christmas shop afloat. As the spark between them grows, Starr must decide what she wants out of life–to go back to New York City or to stay and pursue a new dream.

A joyous, heartwarming, and magical holiday romance from Christy Award-winning author Toni Shiloh that will keep you cozy under the twinkling Christmas lights.

My Review:

The perfect holiday read! The kind you can devour in one sitting but the story still packs an emotional punch and leaves a reader aglow with the warmth of a yuletide happily ever after. Plus it’s fun and flirty, with enough swoonable moments to keep a romantic like me more than content. My heart’s still humming and I can’t wipe the silly grin off my face. 🙂

And there’s a wonderful faith thread about the importance of prayer. Both Starr and Waylon are wrestling with some major life changes and I really appreciate the raw honesty the author brings to their dilemmas. They are both Christians and invoke the power of prayer in their lives but that doesn’t always mean decisions are easy, or that they even feel divinely guided all the time. Sooooo relatable. And refreshing to read about.

The Lewis family is…interesting. Five siblings, a Christmas obsessed mama (she gave all her children Christmas names, after all) and a kind, but somewhat distant father. Interesting dynamics within the family as well, which strikes a realistic chord. And I’m looking forward to getting to know more about these characters…and their happily-ever-afters…in future books.

While I did have a paperback copy of ‘You Make It Feel Like Christmas’ on hand, I couldn’t resist diving into the audible edition because of it’s wonderful narration. Jasmin Walker’s portrayal of these characters is pitch perfect and made me enjoy the story all the more.

The Vow + Giveaway

Some decisions are deadly.

Kate’s husband Erik left her a year ago, ending their marriage without warning for a trust-fund twenty-something and her luxurious global-hopping lifestyle. Now Kate is spending one last Christmas at her family’s Smoky Mountains cabin before selling it to raise cash. But when nostalgia moves her to keep the place, things quickly turn sinister, suggesting all is not what it seems. Someone is watching her…stalking her…leaving disturbing messages, convincing Kate that something truly dark is going on. As the frightening episodes ramp up, and Kate realizes something truly dark is happening, will she be able to uncover what’s really going on before it’s too late?

The Vow is a novella—slightly shorter in length, but definitely not short on suspense.*
**Previously part of the Winter Deceptions box set.**

My Review:

This was a nano-second mood-read decision. I saw a brief review on instagram that intrigued me enough to check it out, discovered the book on audible for a decent price and bought it, downloaded it and started listening all in under five minutes! My intention was to schedule this review for sometime in late Fall, since it has a Christmas theme too, except I’m beside myself with excited enthusiasm and I can’t bear to wait months to share this awesome biblio-find! So, ta-da, here we are with Christmas in July.

Only…this is a novella. A stunning, cleverly crafted, edge-of-your-seat, what-is-happening kind of suspense but, because of the shorter word count, I can’t really say anything without giving stuff away. I am so tempted to tease you with hints, but I’m worried even that would ruin the reading experience for you. But I sooooo want to talk to somebody about that….and the scene where…and…and….and…but I’ll restrain myself and say only this:

Listened to it in one go — excellent narration by Lisa Bozek — finished it gobsmacked. Now I’m on the hunt for more books by D L Wood. (Hooray for new-to-me author finds, especially when they come from reader recommends.)

Deadly Vengeance + Giveaway

The easiest way to murder someone is to make sure they don’t exist…

Someone has erased profiler Gabe Buchanan’s identity…and now they’re trying to kill him. And although Chief Warrant Officer Hannah Austin betrayed him in the past when she was undercover investigating his friend, now she’s his only hope to stay alive and restore his name. With the clock ticking down, can they track down the killer who wants to silence him permanently?

My Review:

Woohoo, twisty turny and completely riveting. Love the cyber aspects of the crime — the concept of losing your entire identity in this day and age with all the repercussions! Shudder! That’s a nightmare all on it’s own but add in the relentless pursuit of the villains and, yikes, hair-raising stuff!

This is a kinda second chance romance — Gabe and Hannah were good friends in college, on the cusp of something more until….well, you’ll have to read the book ’cause it’s complicated. 🙂

A perfect romantic suspense escape read!

Edge of Steele

With enemies surrounding her…

Ryleigh Steele gives in to mounting pressure from her siblings and cousins and leaves her job as a law enforcement officer to join the Steele Guardians. She’s just getting her feet wet when a lumber company begins receiving threats, and the owner contracts with Ryleigh for the Steele Guardians to protect their workers. But the threats quickly escalate under her watch, and a bomb is detonated at one of the sites, killing one of the workers. Can she find the killer and save her company’s reputation and her life?

Ryleigh takes the man’s death personally and commits to finding the killer. Trouble is, the owner has hired a security manager without Ryleigh’s knowledge, and the manager isn’t about to let anyone cut him out of this investigation. Ryleigh gets ready to do battle with him, but when she meets the handsome head of security, former Navy SEAL Finn Durham, she can barely find the words to speak much less fight. She and Finn had once dated, a tumultuous month, that ended badly. Doesn’t matter. She can’t let their past or her residual feelings for him distract her in the hunt for the killer. If she’s not careful, the killer will find her first.

My Review:

These family based suspense series from Susan Sleeman are absolutely one hundred percent my definition of a ‘Comfort Read’! I get giddy with bookish glee every time one comes out and I snatch it up and race through it and then bask in bibliophile wonder…for a nanosecond…until I start pouting and lamenting because now I have to wait for the next Sleeman read. Thankfully she’s a pretty prolific author so the wait is a matter of a few months rather than a full year. Phew!

So, while I’m sad to see the conclusion of the Steele Guardians series, I’m jazzed about the upcoming new series and the fact that we’ve been given a glimpse into what it’s going to be like and…Eeeeepppppp!!!!!!!! I’m so excited!!! Oh — and even though this is #6 in the series, Edge of Steele reads absolutely fine as a standalone. That’s something this author does really well — creating a unique story with an overlapping cast of characters that need no introduction. You just love ’em on sight and you’ll be wowed by all that Steele charm (especially when it comes to their grandparents!)

So, Ryleigh and Finn — in the mood for a stellar second chance romance, anyone? Sqqqueeallll! And it’s a doozie! Love the connection they have from the very start…even if it’s all bristling animosity! Some fun sniping and bantering and no shortage of sizzle. Paired with an intriguing investigation that kept me on edge right to the exciting conclusion. Great balance between suspense and romance and the camaraderie between friends and family. I really can’t adequately express how much I’ve loved this series (and anything else Susan Sleeman writes!) Except to say she’s an auto-buy author for me and I’m very, very, very close to being caught up on her back list too. I love her storytelling that much!

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Whitney Dykehouse. I really enjoy her narrations — she’s done all of Susan Sleeman’s books and I get a real sense of homecoming whenever I start listening.

Yosemite Firestorm + Giveaway

A raging forest fire isn’t the only threat…

When an act of arson claims the life of a hiker, Yosemite Park Ranger Livy Chatham is the only witness — putting her right into the path of determined criminals. Only rock climber Hayden Bryant can protect her from the killers destroying all evidence of their crimes. But can Livy and Hayden outrun the danger that’s as hot on their heels as the fires blazing through Yosemite?

My Review:

I really enjoyed all the wilderness action in this suspense — and the fires were an extra threat that made things that much edgier. Loved all the rock climbing details too — something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the nerve to try! Very fun to get the armchair experience here.

Livy and Hayden make a great dynamic duo — if only they’d let their guard down long enough to explore what a relationship could look like! This is kind of a grumpy / sunshine romance. Livy has ‘Pollyanna’ tendencies, irking the more pragmatic and cynical Hayden to no end. Sometimes his exasperation with her is funny and sometimes I just wanted to smack him upside the head. But Livy holds her own and makes the best kind of impression on this skeptical hero by the end.

Lots of action and adventure with lives — and love — hanging in the balance.

The more time they spend together throughout the Newport Season, the harder it is for Gwendolyn to find Walter a wife when she realizes his perfect match might me….her.

My Review:

Still grinning when I think back on these characters and all the madcap mayhem that follows them around. The hilarity knows no bounds. I mean…I’ve loved all of Jen Turano books but this one gives new meaning to ‘quirky banter’. In fact, in honour of this book, I’ve come up with a new word to describe this particular type of quirky banter. Ready? Here it is (Merriam-Webster eat your heart out!)

Turanter: tur-an-ter, verb, definition: when regular banter takes on next level absurdity all while making complete sense.

Seriously, Jen Turnano’s comedic talent is next level brilliant. And it is infused in every aspect of the story. From character thoughts to tongue-in-cheek descriptions to all the cunning dialogue (aka turanter) — this book is a sheer delight.

It’s an enemies to more love story that sparkles. Tender and light-hearted but with some profound moments as well. The pacing is perfection, from the way the plot develops to the unusual romance. And every single character is memorable. Just…just….an awesomeauce of turanterism!!!

While I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher, I listened to the audible version and I really think Sarah Zimmerman’s performance enhanced my enjoyment that much more!

Lord Farleigh and Miss Frost + Giveaway

An Irish miss and a duke’s son have little in common, but Christmas at the castle has a way of bringing the most unlikely people together.

Isleen Frost wishes her family had stayed in Dublin for Christmas but understands it would have been folly to decline an invitation to the Duke of Montfort’s Christmastide house party. Isleen refuses to allow the opulent castle and powerful duke to impress her. But the duke’s eldest son, Lord Farleigh, is another matter entirely.

Raised as the heir to a duke, Simon Dinard, Lord Farleigh, has learned to project a calm self-assurance despite an inner fear he will never be as confident a leader as his father. When a friendly wager and a spirited Irish lady challenge all his unspoken thoughts, he determines to prove her wrong — and ignore the growing attraction between them.

Christmas celebrations at the castle are always full of surprises, but Isleen and Simon are not at all prepared for the feelings the season inspires between them. An Irish miss and a duke’s son have no business falling involve. But the magic of sleigh rides, snow-covered hills, and mistletoe might change their minds…

This novel is a sweet Regency romance and can be read as a stand-alone, though readers of the previous books will enjoy seeing old friends again.

My Read:

It’s official: I’m so smitten with Sally Britton that I read a Christmas book way out of season. 🙂 However…I did read it around St. Patrick’s Day and the heroine is Irish so I’m somewhat seasonal. Love all the historical details in the Christmas celebrations — including both Irish and English customs. So, this would make a fabulous Christmas read…if you can wait that long to enjoy it!

And, oh my, the banter! It’s that much more fun with some Irish sass added in! Love the way the romance develops between Simon and Isleen. She has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about the British aristocracy (and with good reason, I might add…says the Irish reader!) and Simon’s serious nature makes him appear standoffish which she misinterprets…and that’s the beginning of a whole lot of fun!

This is the fourth book in the Castle Clairvoir Romances but can absolutely be read as a standalone. However, the whole gang has gathered together for Christmas so there’s fun shenanigans with all the previous heroes and heroines too which was all kinds of fun. (I’ve read book two and three, still need to read book one.)

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of Lord Farleigh and Miss Frost, expertly narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd. Love the accents (!) and the zest she brings to the story in her performance.
