My Review:

Well now…how to review this first book in Hannon’s ‘Undaunted Courage’ series without giving away any spoilers?! Because this is the kind of suspense that insidiously builds tension and plot to a crescendo and — whoa — you look back and see things that you didn’t actually notice at the initial read through. So I want to be careful about not giving things away.

Let’s just say I was gobsmacked a few times. And I can’t really tell you why but it’s like I was happily reading along thinking I knew where the story was going only — whiplash U-turn ahead — and I was like, “whhhaaaatttt?!” But then, in other ways things were predictable, still riveting and all, but classic suspense, and if you read this genre a lot you know what to expect….until the author catches you off guard with a sharp upper cut to the armchair sleuth part of your brain. 🙂

It might be safer to talk about the romance. Love the way the relationship between Bri and Mark develops. Not quite enemies to more but wary professionals walking on eggshells around each other at first. Especially on Bri’s end. She has her reasons and an interesting history to back it up. Mark has had his own issues, but he’s definitely more grounded and ready to recognize the spark threatening to ignite between them. (see what I did there with those fire references?)

And I really enjoyed the pacing. We’re given lots of time to really get to know these characters — and their families too. Mark and his Gran and their heartbreaking backstory. And survivor Bri and her two siblings (so hoping they feature prominently in their own HEA novels.) These relationships contributed to the illusion that we have all the time in the world when, in reality, danger is encroaching…da da da da dummmm….cue the eerie music and grab hold of your support bear and make sure to have some comfort chocolate on hand too.

Irene Hannon is right up there on my ‘Best-Most-Favourite-Auto-Buy Authors’ list and she did not disappoint with this book. In fact, even though I had a print copy from the publisher, I could not resist purchasing the audible edition narrated by the ‘Best-Most-Favourite-Auto-Listen Narrator!’ That would be Therese Plummer. Definitely a novel I’ll enjoy listening to again and again.

My Review:

“Health strengthened them. Hope sustained them. And God guided them.” (p 91) I think I need to make this my mantra! It has definitely seen Hadley and her best friend, Elliott (a girl) through a decade of struggles. And what an emotional journey! Brilliantly delivered with compassion and grace.

Their story starts when they are teens sharing a room in a foster home. Volatile Hadley and rule keeper Elliott make an interesting team. And while this is largely Hadley and Monroe’s story, we are treated with Elliott’s point of view from time to time which also brings a secondary romance into the mix. A fascinating study in personalities and coping mechanisms as all three struggle to come to grips with a desperate situation that quickly gets out of control.

Fast forward ten years and life hasn’t gotten any easier for these foster sisters. Oh, they’ve survived and thrived, supporting each other as they worked their way through school but life’s logistics are still challenging. I loved the way they pull together. How they’ve invited strangers into their ‘family’. Women of faith, shining Christ’s light through their actions.

Then there’s Monroe. It appears he has had everything handed to him by wealthy parents. But appearances can be deceiving and he’s paid a huge emotional price for those ‘rewards’. Both Monroe and Hadley have been scarred by their tumultuous past so when they unexpectedly end up on the same team in order to help a traumatized child…well fireworks would be putting it mildly. These two have issues that bring out the worst and the best in one another. Such a tangled web of deceit and sorrow and confusion to wade through! All while attempting to restore speech to a mute child.

My emotions were all over the place as I got deeper into the read. I could see both sides of Monroe and Hadley’s struggle so I could totally feel the frustration and anger and longing. And Monroe’s parents?! Argh! I think my blood pressure is still registering through the roof.

An emotionally complex story that celebrates the joy that comes from truly living in community.

Gah! There’s so much I want to say about this book but I won’t because…spoilers! I was completely captivated from the very first page…from the front cover, actually! I am so loving this multi-authored series that highlights different kinds of companion working dogs and this one is fabulous!

Love the dynamics between Behr and Ellery. She’s one determined firecracker which both amuses and frustrates him. ‘Cause Behr isn’t going to make the whole dog training thing easy on anyone and you all know I love me a grumpy hero with a crusted over heart of gold. 🙂 But Ellery isn’t a quitter and he grudgingly respects that. Not-so-polite strangers morph into friends and then…happy sigh, you know what comes next, this is a Love Inspired novel after all. Cue the toe-curls and get ready to break out in a happy dance.

Lynn writes with emotion and humour and brings depth to all her characters, including the secondary ones. Real life issues, faith-inspired answers all woven together to make a sigh worthy escape read.

My Review:

Eeeeeeppp!!! Trixi told me that I should read more Joanna Barker and this book would be a great place to start so I did, because I’m obedient like that when I get a book referral from a kindred reading spirit. 🙂 Now I’m passing along the recommendation — if you enjoy Regency romance with an air of mystery and more than a few toe-curling kisses, then ‘A Heart Worth Stealing‘ is a book worth reading!

I totally swooned my way through this novel courtesy of Jack Travers and his unorthodox ways — including his sometimes outrageous flirtations. He keeps Ginny all in a dither and I’m afraid that often looks like she’s a short-tempered shrew which totally delights Jack to no end. Such great dynamics! And both hero and heroine have great back stories that play a part in the way they approach life, and specifically this investigation.

The mystery had a wee bit of a Gothic vibe with Ginny reluctantly playing the damsel in distress (though she’s no shrinking violet.) But her home and life are threatened and she needs Jack’s streetwise ways to help her set things to right. I will say that I picked out the villain early on but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the evolving plot.

I listened to the audible edition and enjoyed Elizabeth Knowelden’s narration and highly recommend the audio book to readers who also enjoy listening to their favourite stories.

An absolutely charming collection of novellas set at the beginning of the author’s ‘Hawthorne House’ world. These stories are so good I’ve been inspired to reread all the books in the series…soon!

‘A Return to Hawthorne House‘ is intriguing and playful and with enough swoonable banter to keep your fainting couch actively engaged. And I love the variety Hunter provides — a lovely combination of upstairs/downstairs — and even one ‘mature’ romance which made for an engrossing read. The characters are delightful, the dialogue witty, the angst gentle but still impactful and each happily ever after is blissfully satisfying. I’m reminded of how much I loved this series and I’m eager to get started on my rereads.

My Review:

A contemporary novel with a refreshing outlook. Sadie is single, in her early thirties, and wrestling with the expectations of marriage and motherhood that have thus far passed her by. It’s told entirely from Sadie’s first person point of view and has a bit of a journaling feel to the writing style.

We follow an introspective Sadie as she navigates a future void of ‘prospects’ in a church and family culture that is pushing her to ‘get out there’ and ‘find a husband. ‘ Lot’s of thought provoking examples of how not to be that busybody/nosy/opinionated person in a single woman’s life. 🙂

It’s also an empowering story, as Sadie learns to embrace her life as it is in the moment, instead of banking her happiness on a future that may or may not happen. It’s heartbreaking and funny and soul-stirring as we watch Sadie step out in faith to face new challenges on her own.

“I’m scared to consider what’s going to happen to my life if there are many more repeats of being a cardboard person in a cardboard life. A single woman who feels stuck and like her only hope to be found lies in the dream of a relationship.” (p 25)

As someone who has spent the majority of her adult years as a single woman in a family oriented church environment, I resonated with Sadie’s journey. And even though I’m a romantic at heart, and 99% of my reading hours end in happily ever afters, I still appreciated this Contemporary Fiction offering from Joanne Bischof.

Faith-fueled and full of hope, Sadie’s adventures are just beginning and I can’t wait to read more of them!

November Giveaway — Week Four

First off — my apologies for my intermittent responses to comments this week. WP made things difficult — like not letting me comment on my own blog! I even tried responding to the comment emails and that worked all of twice. So I gave up and left it alone and when I tried much later, voila, all was well. Sigh.

My Review:

What’s really interesting about this novella collection is the different way each author approached the ‘twin’ theme and that results in three unique and entertaining stories.

Shelley Shepard Gray’s ‘The Christmas Not-Wish’ features a pair of foster children longing for a place to belong. Emotional on so many levels, from both the kid’s perspective and their foster parents’. If you’re a Gray fan you might recognize Elizabeth Anne and Will Kurtz from ‘The Protective One‘ (Walnut Creek series.) This story is a peek into their happily ever after, which hasn’t gone exactly as they planned.

Dealing with loss is difficult any time of year, but especially so at Christmas. That’s the challenge Rachel J. Good tackles in ‘New Beginnings’ as heroine Elizabeth struggles to find a balance between her need to deal with things on her own and the good intentions of family and friends who want to ease her way. Add in an unexpected friendship with neighbour Luke, some sacrificial giving and suddenly Elizabeth’s world opens up to all kinds of new possibilities.

The twins in Loree Lough’s ‘Twins Times Two’ are adolescent trouble makers who turn into unlikely matchmakers when Abigail and Jubal are thrown together in their bid to help four troublesome boys discover the spirit of giving at Christmas.

A lovely collection of heartwarming stories.
