Is their connection with the Cotswolds merely an interesting bit of trivia, or is it more? Will Leta and Wendy let their literary noses lead them astray?

You’ll be captivated as this unlikely team chases clues and ferrets out a long-buried secret—a scenario that would make any BBC cozy mystery producer proud. No matter the clues uncovered by Dickens and Christie, you’ll be hard-pressed to guess who the villain is unless, like Leta, you’re able to “talk to the animals.”

My Review:

Eeeepppp!!! New fave cozy mystery alert! Eeeeeepppppp!!!! This book was written for me. Early retirement in a quaint English village. Check. Big personality pets. Check. Feeling like I’ve wandered onto a Midsommer Murders set. Check. The perfect cozy/mystery balance. Check. A wee bit of magical realism. Check!!! So. Much. Fun!

And you gotta love a heroine who channels her inner Nancy Drew when stuff happens. Just like Nancy, Leta has a posse of new friends who are eager to dive into the realm of amateur sleuthing with her. Not to mention Christie and Dickens, Leta’s highly gifted cat and dog. Fan girling over these critters and what they bring to the story! Such a fantastic surprise!

Loved the cozy descriptions that made me feel like I was in the Cotswolds and the bookish influences in the murder mystery raised my bookish glee all the more. Two of my favourite elements in a cozy mystery.

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition narrated by Alex Picard who did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. I especially loved her portrayals of Christie and Dickens (grinning madly.) Would definitely recommend the audio book to readers like me who relish losing themselves in a good storytelling session.

Cheddar Luck Next Time

Cheese-obsessed Bird Eakles has just inherited her grandmother’s estate in a quiet, quirky Californian town. But when a body is found on her property, her life begins to get rather loud…

Bird Nichols is ready to make a fresh start in a familiar place. Last year, her parents died together in a car crash and her beloved grandmother is presumed dead from an ocean drowning. Bird is now moving onto her grandmother’s California coastal property, and finally living out her dream. Bird loves cheese like nothing else. It’s her autistic special interest, and she designs her boards along her sensory needs, and other people love them, too.

But just when everything seems to be going right, the local troublemaker ends up dead on her rural road. Grizz, the closest thing Bird has to family, is the sheriff department’s favourite suspect, but she is determined to prove Grizz’s innocence. So now, Bird needs to unpack her possessions, assemble her pretty cheese boards, and find the true murderer before they strike again.

My Review:

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant! A stellar start to what I hope to be a long lived series. From the pun-y perfect title to the engaging characters and the cleverly crafted mystery – it’s all cozy delight from start to finish.

Love neurodivergent heroine Bird whose obsession with cheese has led her to a unique career creating cheese boards for festive events. True confession: I might have deep dived into cheese boards on the internet — and oh my, but they are glorious works of art! Colour, texture, taste, arrangement — Bird has a talent and a passion that’s etching out a niche for her burgeoning business. And inheriting her deceased grandmother’s property has provided her with the perfect home/buisness base…except for the body in the woods. Bwahahaha!

Cato has achieved the perfect balance between the cozy elements (foodie descriptions to drool over) and the amateur sleuthing. All in a quirky town full of interesting (and sometimes aggravating) characters to provide depth and intrigue. Plus, there’s a potential for romance. Eeep! I am so on board for more Bird stories…even after that jaw-dropping , whhhaaattttt-just-happened?! ending. What is Bird going to do with that?

A compelling and captivating compulsive read…or listen in my case. I totally enjoyed Dominque Salvacion’s narration. She brought Bird’s personality to life along with a myriad of secondary characters which made for an entertaining ‘reading’ experience.

My Review:

Gasp! This is me actually re-reading a biblical fiction novel! This time I gave it a listen though, courtesy of Audible Plus and thoroughly enjoyed Rachel Botchan’s narration. And guess what? It was just as compelling a read the second time around!

Connilyn Cossette’s writing style is so lyrical it begs to be read out loud. Exquisite descriptions about life and customs in biblical times — I swear this author must have a time machine because she gets it right every time. At least, I feel like it’s right for the time period. Even the dialogue. Not being in possession of a time machine, I can’t say for certain. 🙂 But though I’m not widely read in the biblical fiction genre, I will always find room on my TBR pile for this author’s novels. They are irresistible!

And interestingly enough I knew nothing about Levitical cities of refuge until a few weeks ago when my pastor mentioned them in a sermon. Totally fascinated me and then, a short while later, this book shows up on my doorstep. How cool is that? And it’s the first book in the Cities of Refuge series so there’s lots more good reading ahead. Oh — and to make this even more special for fans of Cossette’s Out of Egypt series, Moriyah was a secondary character in Wings of the Wind. Love that bridge between series.

And what an action-packed adventure! The author constantly surprised me with a new twist, an unexpected turn. The whole story is told from Moriyah’s first person point of view and it was easy to instantly relate to and root for this vulnerable young woman who has already suffered so much. Her personal faith journey is inspiring as she goes from living in the shadows because of her scars to becoming a light that transforms people — including herself. Because it isn’t until Moriyah has the courage to look beyond her scars that she can finally live up to her potential.

This would make an awesome book club selection because there’s such depth for discussion within these pages. I mean, don’t we all have scars in some form or another? Visible or invisible — things that hold us back and drag us down? And there are great discussion questions at the end of the book. The kind that make you really think. And stretch. I love it when I connect with my faith through fiction the way I did with this book. Makes for a life-changing read…if you dare to exercise Moriyah size courage!

It’s a new Best Reads blog tradition! Celebrating the month’s new releases the first week of each month.

Because I recently discovered that a book’s success or failure is often determined by first month sales! (Though I bet preorders play into that as well.) Publishing houses look at those stats to determine whether they’ll add on to a series or accept the author’s next manuscript! Some Like It Scot + Giveaway

As Katie attempts to live “Edwardian,” she learns that all that glitters does not a comfortable lifestyle make . . . and surly Scots may turn out to be dashing and creative uncles raising their orphaned nephews. When a few escapades from the Downton era lead Katie on hunts for mermaids and dragons or to a fireside chat with a family who has grown stronger through tragedy, Katie begins to wonder if “home” looks a whole lot like rolling green hills, magnificent braighs, and a few extra “ayes” thrown in for good measure. But can her world-traveling lifestyle fit in with a Scot whose heart is double-knotted to home?

My Review:

First off, kudos to narrators Joshua Manning and Stina Nielsen for their stellar performances. This story is magnificent all on its own but it rises to a whole other level as an audio book. They convey all the drama and humour with the kind of feeling that leads me to believe they enjoyed the story as much as I did and that increased my ‘reading’ pleasure all the more.

So, what can I say about this story other than it’s sheer brilliance in every way. Humour. Faith. Emotional depth. Quirky characters. All woven together into an incredible love story that had me laughing one moment and close to tears the next.

And, much like Katie, I was in a constant state of ‘human combustion of emotion’ because of a certain amount of ‘hot Scotness or Scot hotness.’ Their meet-cute is hysterically appropriate for a Pepper Basham rom/com. Especially since Katie has a unique radar for trouble no matter what country she’s currently traveling through.

Her ‘surly Scot’ is classically brooding though a tender heart beats beneath that brawny, gruff exterior. Personalities clash even as sparks fly and I happily settled in for what I knew would be an exceptional read.

Discovering emotional depth in the midst of riotous bedlam was an extra bonus. Our hero and heroine have suffered similar loss, though they’ve dealt with it in different ways. Basham compassionately tackles the power grief holds – to draw people closer or push them apart. And the hope that comes from finding your place in an accepting community.

‘Some Like it Scot’ is a definite must read (or listen) for discerning romance readers who enjoy savouring every last drop of deliciousness in a profound love story.

Conversations with Kav – Amish in April

Have you heard of Amish in April? It’s a readathon created by book tuber Lizzie Faye Loves Books and cohosted by The Bookish Knitter. The focus of the readathon is exactly what the title indicates – reading Amish Fiction in April.

Preparing my TBR for the readathon got me thinking about the this genre and the changes I’ve noticed over the last few years. Like there seems to be fewer Amish books releasing within the Christian Fiction umbrella but rather publishing with general market companies like Kensington.

Now this might be controversial but it feels like some of the new authors/publishers jumped into the genre at the height of its popularity to cash in on the sales. I kept finding huge irregularities in the Amish culture and faith in these books. One actually featured an Old Order Amish heroine helping with wedding preparations – deciding what flowers to pick for the bouquet, who would hold the rings during the service, the frustrations of trying to find bridesmaid dresses to flatter every figure…um, if you read Amish fiction you get what’s wrong here.

And don’t get me started on the ‘spicy’ Amish Romances that I’ve occasionally run across at my public library. Nothing’s quite as shocking as bringing home what you think is going to be a sweet Amish romance only to discover…well, it’s not.

You might have noticed that I didn’t dedicate a specific day for Amish Fiction this past Reader’s Choice Week. Mostly because I wanted to fit all of RC into one week but also because I feel like Amish Fiction just isn’t as popular as it used to be with comparatively fewer books releasing in this genre. I did find some promising titles though, so I thought I’d share them here ( in case your TBRs aren’t padded enough after last week.)

The book that really intrigues me is Amy Lillard’s The Secrets We Keep – an Amish adjacent mystery. The hero is a former Amish police detective and the Amish heroine was once his sweetheart. Have no idea how the romance will be resolved…or even if it is…but the mystery sounds really intriguing. And Amazon has it tagged as Science Fiction Crime & Mystery. Whhhhhhaaaaaattttttt??????? It’s published by Crooked Lane Books which publishes a lot of the cozy mysteries I read.

Usually I don’t go for the close up of the hero on the cover image so I’m gobsmacked that I couldn’t pick between these two. Absolute cover love draw! I like the way this cover tells a story, gives us so many clues as to what I’ll find inside. And I’m drawn to that diagonal image split between the hero and the heroine. Plus the balance of colour – light and dark – are so pleasing to the eye.
