Book Review – Page 54 – Kav's Best Reads

Blog Update!

So, it’s been nearly a full year since I started up the blog in these new digs and I think I’m wrapping my head around the differences between blogger and WordPress. Unfortunately, I learn by doing things wrong so I have a lot of behind the scenes fixing up to do.

Like with the subject tags for each blog versus categories. Apparently I need to switch those two around if I want an efficient and helpful way to search by authors and genres. Right now the tags are limited to a certain number and appear in a cluster and only the most currently popular tags are visible. Where as the category fields are unlimited and much better suited for long lists of authors.

Then there’s the way the blog posts just run on one after the other with no way to divide them up in to manageable groups that would be easier for browsing. Blogger automatically cued posts up by month and year which was ever so helpful. I need to figure out if that is possible on WP. Which means I have to conquer widgets. They sound cute, but trust me, they aren’t!

I’m also toying with creating pages for specific things — like winners. That would make it easy for readers to stop by the blog any time and scroll through recent wins in case they missed a notification.

Anyway, all this to say that the blog will be under construction for a while and I’m praying I don’t break anything. 🙂 So it might look different when you come to visit but I’ll keep Book Reviews as the home page so you should always wind up here…I think. Yikes!

Now for the biggest change to hit the blog for years!

Due to the steep hike in book prices I’ll be reducing the number of giveaways each week. Probably 2-3 instead of the usual 5. As well, please pay careful attention to the giveaway details as there will likely be more ebook only options in 2024. As well as more gently read print copies.

I’m hoping this all won’t become too confusing but I think I’ve figured out a way to be clear and concise — you just have to read the fine print!

I somehow missed this book when it first came out, though I’ve read the rest of the series, so I was thrilled to discover it in audiobook format! Loved the narration — Romy Nordlinger did justice to the tense, action filled plot.

So, reunion romance amidst the chaos of vengeance and danger made for a thrilling read. Clay’s life is already complicated when he runs into (literally) Sandy Lynn again. Loved the pacing in their ‘reluctant return to love’ story, though survival takes the front seat in this taut romantic suspense.

Desperation. Revenge. Betrayal. Corruption. All play a part in this complex plot to create a spine-tingling, edge-of-your-seat thrill of a read.

My Review:

Epic Jaime Jo Wright! A bit of woo woo mystery with lots of eerie ambiance that you know has a sensible explanation but you just can’t figure it out. I was hooked from the opening line: “Sometimes death comes quietly.” Uh, yeah, I needed to read on!

Dual timelines — both with their own mystery — and I was invested in both equally. There’s also very light romance for both Greta and Kit…emphasis on the light though, but I liked the way it brings hope to the reader without shadowing the already murky waters of the mysteries.

And, oh, those mysteries! Blended to perfection by the end but made for a rabid read until then. I couldn’t put this book down though my poor eyes were screaming, “Rest! Rest! We need rest!” Huh, as if! And I was gobsmacked more than a few times — in both timelines.

Love the way the author wove in some humour amidst all the angst — especially in the current timeline. Kit is my kind of heroine. Impatient. Prickly. Stubborn.:

“Even now she could see Mom’s cautionary look that told Kit to breathe deep and let God be God.

“Maybe God wanted to work through her to slap Evan Fischer silly?” (p 55)

Bwahaha! Haven’t we all been there a time or two? But, whoa, this was also such an emotional read! I felt for both heroines and the complicated emotions churning within and around them. And the way they faced adversity with grit and courage and loyalty to those they loved. Made for such an intense read.

To sum up in one word: Unputdownable!

I picked up the audio to this book on Chirp before I realized I had read the book when it first released eight years ago. I listened to it anyway and enjoyed the story just as much, if not more, as an audio book. Breathtaking and spellbinding!

My Review:

Phew! This book left me gutted and bruised, experiencing an emotional aftershock that still lingers. Barratt is an incredibly gifted writer — both in the mechanics of the art and in her ability to make her reader’s feel. And think. Honestly, you can’t come away from this book without thoughts and opinions and a heart hurting for these characters – especially when you are reminded that they represent millions of real people throughout this earth’s messy history.

I think what really upped the emotional angst for me is that I read ‘The Warsaw Sisters ‘in a world that is very nearly at the brink of what Hitler started back in the 1930s. The categorizing groups of people as evil, the heavy-handed use of propaganda, the racial slurs, intolerance of those classified as ‘other’…and so many other things that make up global politics these days. Barratt shows how all of that swayed ‘decent’ people and contributed to the persecution of the Jews, the Warsaw Ghetto, the death camps. And it breaks my heart, because I really don’t see that we have learned very much from the past.

So, is this a heavy book? Yes. Did it emotionally wreck me? Yes (and I’d be worried if it didn’t.) But does it also offer a thread of hope — slim though it may be, but strong nevertheless? Yes! But it’s also left me with the conviction that heroines like Antonia and Helena aren’t just part of our distant past; they are alive and fighting the good fight all around the world. And that has left me humbled.

I haven’t said anything about the plot — it reads as you might expect a WWII novel to — hardship and suffering buoyed up by brief flashes of joy. And that all important flicker of hope that keeps the characters moving forward during impossible times.

A stunning page-turner.

Pixels and Paint + Giveaway

My Review:

Eeeeeppp!!! I’m happy to report that Kristi Ann Hunter’s knack for Regency banter translates well to a 21st century rom/com. Love the wit and wisdom and heart-rending angst that flows around all that entertaining dialogue. I’d be snort laughing one minute and choking up the next.

And Emma!!! I just wanted to smoosh her up in a hug and carry her away from her totally annoying and unsympathetic family who just didn’t get her because she was different. Gah! Why do parents what to create mini-mes? And her sister is just as bad! Nothing Emma does has any value if it isn’t orchestrated by them – from her clothes to her decor to the way she makes small talk at a party (that she totally doesn’t want to attend) – they are all for improving Emma.

So Emma lives in two worlds; her personal/work life and her family one. And she acts out roles in both, hiding her true self from everyone, including herself sometimes. Until Carter.

Cue the toe-curls and fainting couch, but keep a stash of comfort chocolate handy too because this is an impossible attraction between two polar opposites. What follows is funny and poignant and tumultuous…and achingly beautiful.

I listened to the audible edition of ‘Pixels and Paint‘ and really enjoyed the way the dual narrators (Julie Rogers and Christopher Ragland) brought these characters to life.

The Messenger + Giveaway

My Review:

A hidden gem. And really hard to review because it’s a novella and I don’t want to give anything away. What I can say is that The Messenger is very different from Beth Wiseman’s typical stories and, truthfully, I wasn’t sure if it would appeal to me. Not the kind of read I gravitate too but, we’re talking Beth Wiseman here and I was intrigued enough to venture out of my comfort zone. Am I ever glad I did!

Inspiring and goosebumping — I devoured this little beauty in one sitting because I became so wrapped up in Walter’s story, I just couldn’t put it down. And what I’m taking away is a renewed testimony of the way God works in our lives through messengers here on earth. Everyday, ordinary people who tune into the Spirit and follow His promptings. And how He can weave the most disparate situations into a cohesive whole that is beyond our imagining.

Short and simple, yet powerfully uplifting.

Lost and Found + Giveaway

My Review:

It was so much fun to journey back to Stoney Ridge! One of my favourite fictional places inhabited by the bestest in bookish friends! In fact, I’m inspired now to revisit the earlier Stoney Ridge books after reading ‘Lost and Found’ because Suzanne Woods Fisher knows how to create the kind of lasting memories a reader savours and I know I’m in store for a real homecoming.

You absolutely don’t have to be familiar with previous books that feature this setting in order to enjoy this one. There are some overlapping characters but it’s easy to get to know them so you won’t feel lost in any way. I especially adore David Stolzfus, long-suffering Old Order Amish Bishop. His compassion as well as his humility make him the kind of church leader you want in your corner.

Fisher’s combination of wit and wisdom make this an emotionally satisfying read. I laughed and winced and stewed and fretted my way to the exquisitely satisfying conclusion. Complexities of relationships, light romance and the all too intriguing glimpse at three types of Amish churches (ultra-conservative Swartzentruber, Old Order and Beachy) kept me glued to the page.

Not to mention Trudy’s enlightening (and humorous) bird-watching log entries. There are a lot of birding references which I also found fascinating as it is a popular pastime for many Amish. But it’s the subtle parallels Trudy draws between bird and human habits that is alternately amusing and thought-provoking and adds an extra bit of charm.

A heartwarming and satisfying read that still has me smiling.

My Review:

I’ve read (well, listened) to all the K-9 Search and Rescue books except for this one. It released back in January 2023, but for some reason didn’t appear on audible until this month so I read this one way out of order. Not a problem though, since this isn’t a continuity series. The books are just loosely tied together via the K-9 Search and Rescue theme.

I was immediately drawn to the Alaskan setting in this 8th book. Varland does an incredible job of setting the scene, describing the environment and generally making a reader feel like she’s freezing on a mountain trail somewhere. 🙂 Add in some nail-biting suspense and the drama of a second chance romance and I was in bibliophile bliss all the way through.

Beautifully written — this story reads well, as in it makes an excellent audio book. I’ve found that listening to a novel really highlights the strengths…and the flaws…in storytelling techniques and this one was a joy to listen to..

Loved the complicated dynamics in the relationship between Bre and Griffin. Their personal back stories and collective history added so much depth — and angst — to the plot. Absolutely relatable and believable and full of raw honesty. I was emotionally invested in them as a couple very early on.

The suspense is full of edge-of-your-seat stuff, including some wilderness survival scenes, as this hero and heroine face down the elements in their desperate search for Bre’s missing niece.

Unputdownable (or should I say unstoppable?) until the very last word. Definitely a favourite Love Inspired Suspense.

My Review:

Well now…how to review this first book in Hannon’s ‘Undaunted Courage’ series without giving away any spoilers?! Because this is the kind of suspense that insidiously builds tension and plot to a crescendo and — whoa — you look back and see things that you didn’t actually notice at the initial read through. So I want to be careful about not giving things away.

Let’s just say I was gobsmacked a few times. And I can’t really tell you why but it’s like I was happily reading along thinking I knew where the story was going only — whiplash U-turn ahead — and I was like, “whhhaaaatttt?!” But then, in other ways things were predictable, still riveting and all, but classic suspense, and if you read this genre a lot you know what to expect….until the author catches you off guard with a sharp upper cut to the armchair sleuth part of your brain. 🙂

It might be safer to talk about the romance. Love the way the relationship between Bri and Mark develops. Not quite enemies to more but wary professionals walking on eggshells around each other at first. Especially on Bri’s end. She has her reasons and an interesting history to back it up. Mark has had his own issues, but he’s definitely more grounded and ready to recognize the spark threatening to ignite between them. (see what I did there with those fire references?)

And I really enjoyed the pacing. We’re given lots of time to really get to know these characters — and their families too. Mark and his Gran and their heartbreaking backstory. And survivor Bri and her two siblings (so hoping they feature prominently in their own HEA novels.) These relationships contributed to the illusion that we have all the time in the world when, in reality, danger is encroaching…da da da da dummmm….cue the eerie music and grab hold of your support bear and make sure to have some comfort chocolate on hand too.

Irene Hannon is right up there on my ‘Best-Most-Favourite-Auto-Buy Authors’ list and she did not disappoint with this book. In fact, even though I had a print copy from the publisher, I could not resist purchasing the audible edition narrated by the ‘Best-Most-Favourite-Auto-Listen Narrator!’ That would be Therese Plummer. Definitely a novel I’ll enjoy listening to again and again.
