2023 Reading Goals Giveaway

This is the second year I’ve made concrete reading goals and I’m getting a crazy kick out of keeping tabs on what I’m reading. So, I thought I would share my progress now that we’ve reached the half-year mark. (Gasp! Where does the time go?!) I’ll share my progress below and you can chime in about your reading goals in the comments. Don’t worry — a goal can be as simple as ‘read a book’ which I know you all are doing, but, if you have more specific goals it would e fun to hear about them too.

TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY: just share anything goal related in the comments. Then, in the same comment, list a book that will help you reach your goal. So it looks like this:

“I want to catch up on some suspense series. Night Prey by Susan Sleeman.”

****NOTE: BOOKS MUST BE CHRISTIAN FICTION****

You can enter up to three times in three separate comments — and you can use the same goal for a different one each time.

Books can be published any time through September 2023. Currently published books will be ordered right away, otherwise you’ll get an IOU for a later title.

See? Easy Peasy. But, if you’re still not clear, don’t be shy about asking questions.

Here’s how I’m doing on my goals so far this year:

  • 269 (ish) books read to date, 148 for this 2nd quarter— I’ve added on that ish ’cause I’m going by my Good Reads # but I read ahead for the blog so the count is a wee bit higher. And here’s some fun stats:
  • 56 Audible
  • 88 Audible Plus
  • 19 Chirp
  • 10 for Review
  • 76 from the library (print and audio)
  • 25 print purchased by me

And broken down by genre (because I’m that much of a book nerd these days.)

  • 31 Historical
  • 13 Regency
  • WWI
  • 5 WWII
  • 26 Contemporary
  • Amish
  • 32 Romantic Suspense
  • Suspense
  • 5 Mystery
  • 136 Cozy Mysteries (yikes!)
  • 24 Historical Mysteries
  • Dual Time lines
  • 10 Novella set
  • 8 Middle Grade
  • 1 Fairy Tale Retelling

Now for my goals:

#1 READ MORE INDIE BOOKS

29 books — not great given the number of books I’ve read overall so I’ll try to improve next quarter.

#2 READ MORE DEBUT BOOKS

9 books — not bad, it’s hard to source out debuts, I tend to stumble onto them.

#3 READ MORE NEW TO ME AUTHORS

47 authors — and have found some new faves too, which is going to make my reading life that much more complicated. 🙂

#4 DIVERSIFY MY READING

74 books — largely due to setting (thank you Regencies!) so I’m going to try harder to branch out next quarter.

Diverse Settings:

  • 34 books set in England
  • 45books set in Canada
  • 4 books set in Ireland
  • 3 books set in Germany
  • 2 books set in Africa
  • 3 books set in France
  • 2 books set in Asia
  • 1 book set in Denmark
  • 1 book set in Greece
  • 1 book set in Austria
  • 3 book set in Wales
  • 3 book set in Scotland

Diverse author by nationality:

  • 7 Canadian
  • British
  • Irish
  • 2 Australian
  • 1 New Zealand
  • ethnically diverse authors
  • 15 books with at least one ethnically diverse MC
  • 5 books with disabled or chronically ill characters

#5 PLAY AUTHOR CATCH-UP

Last year I put way too many authors on this list one of which was Christy Barritt (what was I thinking?!) so I failed dismally. This year I’m going to concentrate on one or two each quarter. This time round it was:

Sally Britton (surprised?) — I’ve read 11 out of 19 books (still have some work to do!) and Susan Sleeman — just have 6 books to go (8 if you count her May release) out of…a bazillion books! I’m getting closer!

#6 GIVE UNLOVED TROPES A SECOND CHANCE

5 books read. Sigh — I really don’t like to move out of my comfort zone and I don’t think that’s likely to change any time soon. I enjoyed the books I read for the most part, but I’m not going out of my way to find these tropes. 🙂

#7 STORY CHATS RECOMMENDS

Story Chats is a Booktube video (podcast?) hosted by three indie authors — Valerie Comer, Elizabeth Maddrey and Narelle Atkins. It’s a weekly show where they highlight contemporary Christian Romance (CCR) using various themes/tropes, as well as host guest authors. My goal is to read at least one book recommend a month and, yay, I’m 6 for 6!

SERIOUS ABOUT SERIES:

And then there’s this whole other beast called a SAS list, that stand for Serious About Series. I might have been overly ambitious when I made up these lists…they fill an entire book after all, but here it is in a nutshell:

TRILIGOIES IN PROGRESS

10 completed (or up to date) out of 28

TRILIGOIES TO START:

started and completed; 4 started but not completed out of 28

SERIES I’M CURRENT WITH

33 out of 38 (a few new releases slipped passed me!)

SERIES IN PROGRESS:

Have been randomly reading through 31 out of 31! Close to catching up on a few of them..

SERIES TO START

38 started, 8 up to date out of 106!!!!!

Olympic Mountain Pursuit + Giveaway

Can this K-9 get a child to safety?

Four years ago, former US Marshal Jackson Dean left his job after falling for a witness—who’s suddenly the target of an assassin. Now it’s up to Jackson and his K-9 partner to protect single mom Everly Lopez and her young daughter when Everly’s identity is blown. But with hired killers looking for a payday, Jackson must use all his resources to stop them from silencing Everly permanently.

Pacific Northwest K-9 Unit

My Review:

Another compelling addition to this continuity series, though it reads wonderfully well as a standalone too. There’s an overarching suspense plot that slowly builds through all the books and won’t be solved until the last one, but each book has it’s own suspense and romance that come to satisfactory conclusions so you aren’t left with too much of a cliffhanger. 🙂

I really loved the way this story developed. Not as fast paced as many Love Inspired Suspense novels, but no less captivating — maybe even more so because of the unique pacing. There’s still plenty of action — but enough ‘down time’ in between to really get into the intricacies of the romance.

An almost-but-not-quite second chance love story. Jackson and Everly developed a close bond four years ago when he over saw her protection in the WITSEC programme. But, of course, those circumstances aren’t conducive to romance and we fast forward four years to a time when so much as changed for both of them.

I really appreciated Everly’s very real struggle with her anger towards God. I found those scenes so honest — emotionally raw — and very relatable. Moving and inspiring.

I listened to the audible edition of Olympic Mountain Pursuit, expertly narrated by Cindy Kay. I’m beyond thrilled that the whole series is available on audible and I have them all pre-ordered and ready to start listening to the day they release. A special kind of bibliophile thrill.

July New Releases Giveaway!

Photo by Tairon Fernandez on Pexels.com

It’s a new Best Reads blog tradition! Celebrating the month’s new releases the first week of each month.

Because I recently discovered that a book’s success or failure is often determined by first month sales! (Though I bet preorders play into that as well.) Publishing houses look at those stats to determine whether they’ll add on to a series or accept the author’s next manuscript! All that literary goodness hanging in the balance but for a month’s worth of sales! (This was a cozy mystery author, but I imagine all traditional publishers use the same ‘system’.) So, I thought I should do my wee little bit to promote Christian Fiction.

By hosting a special “Hello — insert month” giveaway. It’s easy to play along. You just have to choose one of the July 2023 new releases on your TBR wishlist (must be Christian Fiction) and mention the title in a comment below (or email me at kavluvstoread AT yahoo DOT ca.) If your name is drawn, that July release is the book you will win and we’re one book count closer to keeping our fave authors in business.

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE TO:

ebook for anyone anywhere who has an Amazon.com kindle account

US – paperback or ebook copy — winner’s choice

Canada -paperback or ebook (in form of an Amazon gift card) or audible.ca audio book (if available) – winner’s choice

Draw will be held and winner announced on Saturday July 8 2023.

Carol Awards Semi-Finalists 2023 – Historical Romance + Giveaway

First off — what exactly are the Carol Awards?

They are awards given out by American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) in recognition of outstanding Christian fiction in the previous calendar year. So these 2023 finalists are books published in 2022. You might have read them already, you might not. I’ll include links to books I’ve read and reviewed.

How does this giveaway work?

You select which of the Carol Award finalists 2023 — Historical Romance Category you would like to receive. Mention the title in your comment (or an email if you’re entering that way) and if you win, that’s the book that will be sent to you. Easy Peasy.

Of Note: In past years, ACFW has announced the three finalists of each category in June and then the winners during their annual Writer’s Conference in late August/early September. This year they’ve switched it up and have announced seven semi-finalists in each category which will be whittled down to three finalists the first day of the conference at the end of August and then the winners in each category will be announced on the final day of the conference. So., with only two days in between the finalist announcements and the winner announcements, we’re going to have to go with wading through the seven semi-finalists so these weekly giveaways are going to be lengthy. Sorry about that. And now here are the Historical Romance Semi-Finalists.

The Rancher’s Want-Ad Mix-up by Megan Besing; Love Inspired Historical — paperback or ebook giveaway — When Della Mae Wagner’s train arrives in Missouri, she’s shocked to find that the couple who hired her don’t just want a teacher for their grandsons but a wife for their son! After a broken engagement, marriage is not in Della’s plans. And Hank Lamson isn’t pleased—with his parents, with his unexpected guest or with Della’s unfairly appealing smile. But his plans to send her packing are foiled as his family comes to love her…and he feels the walls around his wounded heart start to fall.

Her bond with Dimitri has flourished despite the miles between them, but when Dimitri goes unexpectedly missing, she sets the wheels in motion to find him. The Germans make it difficult for her to keep Green Leaf Books afloat. And she must keep the store open if she is to continue aiding the resistance by passing secret messages between the pages of her books.

As the war rages on, Paul offers his own resistance by sabotaging his product and hiding British airmen in his factory. But in order to carry out his mission, he must appear to support the occupation—which does not win him any sympathy when he meets Lucie in the bookstore.

In a world turned upside down, will love or duty prevail?

Jeanette’s Gift by Blossom Turner; Wild Heart Books — paperback and ebook giveaway —

At twenty-nine, Jeanette Williams has watched each one of her four sisters marry and start families of their own. It’s hard not to believe God has forgotten the desires of her heart, especially when most people refer to her as Spinster Williams. Without the beautiful children she teaches, life would be unbearably lonely.

When the handsome widower, Theo Wallace, and his six children move into the Shenandoah Valley, every available woman is atwitter—except for Jeanette. She has no such aspirations that someone as plain as her could draw even a smattering of interest.

As life throws this unlikely couple together, Jeanette can’t help but fall in love with Theo’s children and their soul-wrenching plight. Before she knows it, her heart is far more invested than she could’ve ever imagined. And not just with the children, but with their handsome father as well. Is she headed for another heartbreak, or is it possible God had a beautiful plan in the works all along?

Reader’s Choice Week Winners – Summer Edition

Well, this was a fun week — and a distraction from the heat and smog! Thanks for sharing in the anticipatory joy of new releases! My wishlist is nicely plumped up now. 🙂

Before we get to the fun stuff, here’s some bibliophile nerdy stats for you. I always find it fascinating to see what the most requested books are in each category. If you don’t, just scroll down until we get to the part where I announce the winners.

And now it’s time to move into the part of this post you will be most interested in (and I thank you for indulging in my bibliophile nerdiness.)

READERS CHOICE WEEK, SUMMER EDITION, WINNERS!

HISTORICAL FICTION WINNERS!

CONTEMPORARY WINNERS!

MYSTERY/SUSPENSE WINNERS!

AMISH WINNERS!

GENERAL CHRISTIAN FICTION WINNERS!

But wait, it’s not over yet. The Vanity category has become a blog tradition. It’s where a book is actually judged by its cover and I choose my favourite cover art per genre and then draw from a pool of readers who requested that title. Here are my COVER LOVE winners!!

HISTORICAL COVER LOVE WINNER

(My eye is drawn to the lavender hues and I love the image of the heroine looking over her should…she looks like she has spunk and sass to spare and I can’t wait to meet her!)

CONTEMPORARY COVER LOVE WINNER

(I love the playfulness in this cover — and the way the hero is all tangled up in lights makes me think it won’t be long before his heart is all tangled up too. 🙂 Plus, I love the way the title creates the Christmas tree. Very clever.)

MYSTERY/SUSPENSE COVER LOVE

(You might think this is a rather plain cover to win my high esteem…and you might be right but I think I’ve been influenced by the horrid hot humid weather we’ve been having. Hello, Canada Day is being celebrated with sever thunderstorms and tornado warnings (!) in my neck of the woods and every time it rains, the humidity gets worse. All that to say, I find that lovely icy cool cover refreshing…)

AMISH COVER LOVE

(Heroine wearing glasses on the cover for the win!!! That’s all I’m gonna say.)

WAIT! Don’t go away ’cause we’re not through. We have another Reader’s Choice tradition of picking a random number which becomes a ‘just because giveaway’ on the genre specific days. If that doesn’t make sense, all you need to know is that it means more book giveaways. Woohoo! This time the number is: 65

HISTORICAL 65TH

CONTEMPORARY 65TH

MYSTERY/SUSPENSE 65TH

That’s another RC wrap up. I’ll send winners an email stating their book win, publication date and requesting contact info so that I’ll have everything ready for release day. Then I’ll email you once again once the book has been ordered. Oh — and if you didn’t include your email in your comment it’s up to you to contact me. 🙂
