The Proposal Plot + Giveaway

A headstrong young businesswoman. An unlucky-in-love bachelor. And the chaperoning assignment that keeps pushing them together.

For someone so strong-willed and certain, Ella Yoder has never been more unsure of her life. It’s been a year since she convinced her father to move with her and her younger sister Junia to Marigold, Ohio, to open E and J Grocery. Ella’s got a keen eye for running a business and has big dreams to expand. But her plans are stalled because Junia refuses to lift a finger at the store–or listen to her about anything.

Nelson Bontranger knows one thing for creating his own artisan deli meats is his passion. Well, maybe one other he’s sworn off women forever. After two bouts of heartbreak, he’s not willing to open up himself to a third. When he eyes his own butcher shop next to E and J Grocery in Marigold, he’s surprised to learn that Ella has had her eye on the property for some time. He doesn’t trust this stubborn, pushy young woman–and for her, the feeling is mutual.

Against their wishes, Ella and Nelson’s paths continue to cross when Nelson’s nephew Malachi falls head over heels for Junia. Nelson and Ella are brought together to keep the lovebirds in check, but somewhere along the line, their frustration turns to something altogether more pleasant. But they will both need to come to terms with past pain before they can find their future happiness.

My Review:

A captivating Amish romance full of surprises. Like that fiery meet-cute! Bwahahaha! And things don’t settle down for quite a while so be prepared for clashing wills and lamentable outbursts in this enemies to more romantic trope.

Truth: sometimes Ella frustrated me no end! She is opinionated and bossy to the point I wanted to purse whomp some sense into her. Her motives are good, but her delivery leaves a lot to be desired! Which means she makes a horrible first impression on Nelson and that doesn’t improve upon further acquaintance for a long time. I think it’s about the halfway point before they declare a truce.

And Nelson is just a tad grumpy over all things Ella which comes with its own frustrations. So this one isn’t your typical ‘sweet’ romance. I do like the way the author digs deep into both our hero ad heroine’s backstories and their family dynamics. Especially Ella’s. It really helps to explain nuances of her personality. I could totally sympathize with her and became righteously indignant on her behalf more than once. But then we’re given more insights into Ella’s father and sister and well..wow, it all makes sense. The author doesn’t just leave it there, though, she works some healing magic that includes even more romance which made for a delightfully satisfying read.

I enjoyed listening to the audio edition of ‘The Proposal Plot’ expertly narrated by Lauren Berst. She’s a familiar voice in my Amish Fiction listening which made this even more of a comfort read for me. Funny how I can become as attached to narrators as I am to my fave authors.

My thanks to Thomas Nelson, Zondervan Fiction Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

April Love Inspired Releases + Giveaway

Sadly, I’ve struggled to read print editions of the Love Inspired lines for awhile now. Has anyone else noticed how the ink has gotten fainter post COVID? Or maybe it’s just my wonky eyes. I have been having vision issues when it comes to smaller print and especially reading from a screen so ebooks are out. Until that gets sorted(hopefully), I’m going to stop getting Love Inspired books. The struggle to read robs all the joy out of the story! 😦

Luckily some of their books are offered on audible now, mostly in the Suspense line, and at a very affordable price so I grab up all I can. I have 11 preordered but only 3 of those are Love Inspired. The number of audio books have been increasing over the last year so I’m hoping more will become available in the future.

I still want to support the authors though, so I am starting a Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense monthly new releases giveaway. Separate days for each line. I’ll list all the books and synopsis in a post and you can choose which book you would like to win if your name is drawn.

FOR THIS GIVEAWAY: Choose ONE of the April Love Inspired books listed below, add the title to a comment (or in an email – kavluvstoreadATyahooDOTca) and if your name is drawn, that’s the book you will win.

My Review:

published in 2018

Wow…just…wow! Intense doesn’t begin to describe this book. Riveting right from the nail-biting opening scene and, whoa, talk about a meet-cute! How can any of this be made right? Through the cunning creative mind of the author, that’s how.

Impossible to review adequately without spoilers because the plot catapults from one tense scene to the next with enticing clues and downright stunning revelations. Danger. Corruption. Betrayal. All woven into a web of deceit so insidious it’s impossible to prove. Hence the apt title, ‘Burden of Proof’ and that burden is placed on April as she tries to sort out fact from fiction in her search for the truth.

DiAnn Mills is a masterful storyteller and I need to read more of her books. ASAP!

If the Boot Fits + Giveaway

Determined to prove that cattle king Eli Dearing has no justification for evicting his stepmother and half brothers, Asher Ellis uses the cover of a fancy ball to break into the Three Cedars ranch house to search for proof of wrongdoing. On the verge of discovery, he flees, but a boy’s cry compels him to make a daring rescue.

Spunky and independent, Samantha Dearing balks when she learns the ball her father is hosting in her honor is nothing more than a matrimonial ambush. Taking a break from her unwanted suitors, Samantha spots a thief fleeing her home. When the stranger ends up saving her brother’s life, she hides the only clue to his identity left behind–his boot–and resolves to find him herself.

But when Samantha encounters the older brother of a student she tutors, all thoughts of the bootless mystery man vanish. And although Asher tries to keep his distance from Samantha for reasons of his own, a series of suspicious accidents befall her, and his protective instincts flare, no matter the cost to their future.

This Western reimagining of the classic Cinderella fairy tale is an enchanting story of courage, family, and the power of true love.

My Review:

While I wouldn’t call this a true Cinderella reimagining there are some light nods to the fairy tale, the major one being the boot left behind at the ball. I like the gender swap with Asher in the Cinderella role (clever name) and Samantha the western ‘royalty’ on the hunt. But after that eventful opening scene the story becomes very much it’s own Western romance with not nearly enough connections to the fairy tale. Still a rollicking good story, I just wouldn’t define it as a retelling.

There’s action and adventure and a building threat that leads to a mystery which needs solving so be prepared for a fast paced read that’s hard to put down. And a solid faith thread that winds through it all. I really appreciated the scriptures shared and snippets of wisdom from certain characters.

Then there’s the romance. Happy sigh. Asher’s loyalty and dedication to his family make him perfect hero material…even if it drives him to do something regrettable. Samantha is no pampered princess, well, she is sort of, but she doesn’t let it go to her head. She has a heart for service and that leads her to Asher’s family and, voila, sparks fly and energy sizzles and things get delightfully complicated.

I listened to the audible edition aptly narrated by Barbara McCulloh. She’s a favourite of mine and has the perfect voice for a Western — if that makes any sense — and I thoroughly enjoyed the way she brought these characters to life.

April Giveaway – Week Two

New blog feature: monthly release updates from Love Inspired and you get to pick which book you would like to win if your name is drawn.

Murder Most Owl

The first in the enchanting new Magical Menagerie mystery series where things are not always what they seem. Georgie Johansen returns to the charming, coastal town of Twilight Cove and quickly finds herself in a whirlwind of romance, magic and murder!

It’s been years since screenwriter Georgie Johansen last visited her Aunt Olivia’s farm in the coastal town of Twilight Cove and things have certainly changed. First of all it’s now an animal sanctuary, and then there’s the new farmhand who’s as mysterious as he is handsome. Her first day on the farm, Georgie encounters the eccentric Dorothy Shale, an older woman who lives in a cabin in the woods. There are rumours that Dorothy’s a witch, but Georgie doesn’t believe that. Although, Dorothy does have an unusual magical presence around her . . .

When Dorothy ends up murdered, suspicion falls on Georgie – she was the one who found the poor woman’s body, and being new in town doesn’t help with the suspicion. Things only get worse when it turns out that Dorothy left her valuable plot of land to Auntie O!

Georgie must act fast to clear her and her aunt’s names by finding the real killer. But as bodies start to mount up, the pressure rises. With the help of the unusual powers of Dorothy’s two dogs and great-horned owl, can Georgie uncover the truth before she becomes the killer’s next target?

My Review:

Eeeepppp!!!! New stellar cozy mystery alert! Love the animal sanctuary setting and the air of magical mystery. Not solidly paranormal so no worries if that’s not your thing. Just light touches of whimsy. Similar to Sofie Kelly’s ‘Magical Cats’ series or Amanda Flower’s ‘Magical Bookshop’ series. So, very much set in the real world (well, as ‘real’ as a cozy mystery can get!) with gentle enchanting touches that completely charmed me.

Flossie and Fancy (springer spaniels with unique talents) make amazing back up for amateur sleuth Georgie. Love the way the author has written their relationship — and yes, the dogs definitely have big personalities. So much fun! As is Euclid, the wise owl who likes to keep an eye on Georgie. Of course, there are human secondary characters too. Auntie O and the mysterious temporary farmhand top my list of faves.

And then there’s the mystery, complete with enough viable suspects to keep me on the very edge of my sleuthing armchair. I enjoyed the way Georgie’s investigation played out. She doesn’t pull any TSTL stunts (well, maybe one but with a solid reason so I’ll give her a pass.) Kept me turning pages until all was revealed and then I was left still wanting more — like the second book in the ‘Magical Menagerie‘ series to come out asap!!!

Baby Protection Mission + Giveaway

When a baby is targeted, can a K-9 team keep him safe?

When his sister is kidnapped, rancher Cade McNeal will do anything to prevent his baby nephew from being next. Now Officer Ashley Hanson and her K-9 partner are on the case, and it’s up to them to track down the assailant and keep Cade and his nephew from harm. Mountain Country K-9 unit

My Review:

Woohoo! We’re at the start of a new Love Inspired Suspense continuity series featuring K-9s. That right there has sent me into a euphoric state of bibliophile bliss. Plus all the books will be available in audible format too which has me a tad shy of giddy. I know, I’m such a ridiculous book nerd.

Laura Scott has us off to a great start with lots of adrenaline rushes and high intrigue. And, seriously, who can resist a rough, tough cowboy cradling a baby in his arms? Not me!

So, the suspense in this first novel deals with an abduction which involves lots of tense moments and heart-stopping action scenes, but there’s also an over-arcing series suspense involving a serial killer. We’re introduced to all the team members in this book though the focus stays mainly on Ashley and her K-9 partner. And I love that it’s a multi-state task force so we’ll get to do some traveling as we follow the team on the hunt for a killer.

An absorbing, quick read (or, in my case listen). Jennifer Jill Araya’s narration enhanced my ‘reading’ enjoyment that much more.

Sandcastle Inn + Giveaway

Vienna Price never intended to return for more than a passing visit to Oregon and all the bad memories she’d left behind. But when your career tanks, home is where you go to nurse your wounds and chart a new course. Only temporarily, of course–because as much as she loves her quirky mom, anything more than a short stay would drive them both crazy.

A trip to Oregon isn’t in Matt Quinn’s plans, either, until a perfectly timed appeal for help arrives from his sister. What better place to decompress after a shattering loss than a quiet, seaside town named Hope Harbor? But R&R isn’t on the agenda when he arrives to find his sister’s new enterprise on life support.

Vienna, however, may have just the skills needed to resuscitate the foundering B&B–if Matt can convince her to hang around long enough to mend an inn . . . and his heart.

My Review:

Hope Harbor is one of my favourite series — ever! — so I was thrilled to add this tenth book to my collection. I love this setting, the community and the thrill of meeting up with familiar characters who feel like friends. Having said that, ‘Sandcastle Inn’ can definitely be read as a standalone, but, if you are an ardent visitor of this special corner of the fictional world, you’ll get an extra thrill every time something seemingly insignificant is mentioned (since you’re in the know.) So. Much. Fun. I’m looking at you Floyd and Gladys and belching seal and dueling clerics and Charlie’s taco stand and….I’m still in a swoon of giddy bibliophile delight!

Love Irene Hannon’s rich storytelling, her complex characters wrestling with real life problems and the way they come together to work out a solution. You can see God’s hand in their gathering and I got so excited as I watched events unfold.

We’re blessed with two romances (eeeep!) While the main focus is on Matt and Vienna, there’s a secondary love story featuring a young married couple trying to work through a tough situation. And Hope Harbor is the perfect place to land when you’re down on your luck or facing tough decisions or trying to mend relationships or, well, any hard thing you can think of. I so wish this town really existed, I’d move there in a flash! But maybe, more to the point, is the inspiration to create our own loving and nurturing Hope Harbors wherever we call home.

I listened to the audible edition (pre-ordered and then downloaded on release day because I couldn’t not wait!) and, as always, was thrilled by Therese Plummer’s exceptional narration.

Cold Case Target + Giveaway

Caught in a serial killer’s deadly game with nowhere to turn…

Interrupting an attempted murder—and leaving with incriminating evidence—makes Sissy Spencer a serial killer’s next target. With a flash drive in her possession containing disturbing proof of multiple murders, Sissy has no choice but to trust her ex-boyfriend, private investigator Beau Brighton, to keep her safe. But can they unravel the clues and track down a killer…before he catches them first?

My Review:

Whoa…emotional overload and hair-raising angst…this must be a Jessica R. Patch romantic suspense novel! Be prepared for a reading (or in my case, listening) marathon, ’cause you’ll become so absorbed in the story you won’t want to break away until everything is resolved. And — phew — what a journey to that happily every after!

A second chance romance filled with trepidation. Sissy does not want anything to do with Beau Brighton. Period. But her brother has hired the man on as a private investigator for the family business and with a serial killer stalking her, no one is listening to Sissy’s protestations.

What she doesn’t understand is that Beau is a changed man. Transformed by faith and eager to make amends. These two clash and battle (well, that’s mostly Sissy) even as sparks fly and yearnings for ‘what might have been’ start to take hold. Only, these two have backstories that will break a sensitive reader’s heart so be prepared for some emotional turmoil. Love the honesty of their romance. It’s raw and real and punctuated with highs and lows. Hurt feelings. Unforgiveness. So many barriers stand between theses two and their second chance. Makes for the kind of read you feel your way through. Outstanding and, eventually, triumphant.

The suspense is the edge-of-your-seat, whiplash-inducing kind that’s impossible to put down. And, are we surprised (?), features a serial killer. Tense and spine tingling and that ending…..Wow, just…WOW!

This second book in the Texas Crimes Scene Cleaners series reads well as a standalone but I love the camaraderie among the Spencer siblings and the glimpse we are given into the lives of future series heroes and heroines. Can’t wait for book three to come out!

I enjoyed listening to the audible edition of this book and can’t gush enough over how excited I am that more and more Love Inspired Suspense novels are being made available in this format! Woot! Makes me one happy listener.

Reader’s Choice Goal Review Giveaway – Spring Edition

Photo by Markus Winkler on Pexels.com

Another Best Reads Blog tradition is quarterly reading goal reviews. I’ll share my progress (or not!) here just for some fun, book nerdy stats and, if you’re so inclined you can share a goal or two in the comments. But no pressure – a goal can be as simple as ‘read a book.’

So, to enter this giveaway, just share anything goal related in the comments. Then, in the same comment, list a book that will help you reach your goal. So it looks like this:

“I want to catch up on some suspense series. Night Prey by Susan Sleeman.”

NOTE: BOOKS MUST BE CHRISTIAN FICTION

You can enter up to three times in three separate comments — and you can use the same goal or a different one each time, but a different title for each entry.

Books can be published any time up through to June 2024. Currently published books will be ordered this coming week for winners, otherwise it will be an IOU for a title releasing later in April, May or June 2024.

See? Easy Peasy. But if you’re still not clear, don’t be shy about asking questions.

Books Read: 137

Other is a mix of YA, Middle Grade, Fantasy, Novellas & Fairytale Retellings.

I’m surprised that Contemporary won out over Historical because I feel like I’ve read a lot of Historical Fiction. And cozy mysteries took up almost half my reading in the first quarter of 2024!

Five of my goals relate to authors and I made pretty good headway on four of them as you’ll see in the graphic below. (Yes, I’ve gone graph made…but…humour me.) The goal I did rather abysmally in was #5, where I was supposed to concentrate on certain authors’ backlists. I read all of 3 books! Will definitely have to concentrate on this goal for my spring/summer reading.

A few other goal highlights from January – March 2024:

  • I did really well with my Diversity goals — 58 out of 137 books! That’s just over 40% of the books I read. Diversity includes settings other than the US, ethnic diverse authors and characters and non-American authors. I’m really enjoying the added variety this brings to my fiction. Hope to make it 50% by the next Goal Review.
  • I actually achieved my Reading out of my Comfort Zone goal already! I set 5 titles for the whole year and it’s done and dusted. Woohoo me!!!!
  • I’m making some headway on the series I targeted for this year. I chose 24 new-to-me series to start (guess how many I started that weren’t on my list?!), 24 series to catch up on and 24 series to keep current with. I started 7 of the new-to-me series, am working my way through 8 of the catch-up series (only 3 are caught up) and am current with 15 of the 24 series on that list. So not bad. 🙂
  • And, of course, I kept up with all my reading stats!

Phew! That’s it for me. How about you?

Share below and remember to include a book title that will help you achieve any kind of reading goal. You can enter three times in three separate comments using the same goal or different ones. What ever strikes your fancy. Just make sure each entry is for a different title.
