Reader’s Choice Giveaway – Autumn 2024 Edition – Goal Review

Photo by Markus Winkler on Pexels.com

Another Best Reads Blog tradition is quarterly reading goal reviews. I’ll share my progress (or not!) here just for some fun, book nerdy stats and, if you’re so inclined you can share a goal or two in the comments. But no pressure – a goal can be as simple as ‘read a book.’

So, to enter this giveaway, just share anything goal related in the comments. Then, in the same comment, list a book that will help you reach your goal. So it looks like this:

“I want to catch up on some suspense series. Night Prey by Susan Sleeman.”

NOTE: BOOKS MUST BE CHRISTIAN FICTION

You can enter up to three times in three separate comments — and you can use the same goal or a different one each time, but a different title for each entry.

Books can be published any time up through to December 2024. Currently published books will be ordered this coming week for winners, otherwise it will be an IOU for a title releasing later in October, November or December 2024.

See? Easy Peasy. But if you’re still not clear, don’t be shy about asking questions.

Now, here are some of my reading goal highlights — just have three more months to work on them! Ack!

  5. As one numbers/stats nerd to another, I absolutely LOVE goal stats day and all your charts and pies! Most of your 10 goals in the first graphic fit into mine one way or another except reading out of my comfort zone. There’s plenty of “discomfort” in life without it infiltrating my reading habit, lol.

My goals boil down to this_

    1) Read 150 books, I already upped this goal to 200 as I have been reading a lot of short stories with 100-150 pages, so it makes it look like I”m a reading wiz but really 2 of those equal one normal length book , haha. I’m at 195 books today, check.

2)Read 2 new to me/debut authors a month, I’m at 37 so far, about 4 per month, check, check.

3)Read favorite authors new releases. I’ve kept up with this pretty well, so check, check, check!

    4) Read a backlist book for every new release. This goal is a dismal fail and I’m striking it from my goal list, lol. I’ve had KU this year and have been on a reading frenzy soaking up all the “free” books. No time for backlist or rereads.

Whew, anyone who reads through all that deserves a medal. I should have read “all things Christmas” as a reading goal because I do love all things Christmasy.

    1. Awesome progress, Tracey! I’ve been finding new-to-me authors easier than debut authors. Haven’t made a concerted effort to specifically hunt them down though. Love that you had to up your book number goal and you’re already 5 away from meeting it. Go you!

I find that audible makes rereading more doable — either I own the book in audio format already and it’s easy to re-listen, especially when I’m working around the house or garden or, a book I have a physical copy is on Audible Plus which is free so it’s been fun to revisit fave stories in a different format.

I may yet adopt your reading out of comfort zone philosophy. You are so right, there’s enough discomfort in life without adding it to our fictional lives too. I have read 12 out of comfort zone books and, honestly, only about four are authors I might read again in the future. And I’ve decided that some situations just don’t appeal to me, so I’ll likely avoid them altogether, never mind that the rest of the story might be wonderful. Though, while I’m not a billionaire romance fan, I won’t religiously avoid them now after reading another one I enjoyed. I won’t go running out to look for them either, mind you. 🙂

Good luck, Tracey…and thanks for giving me the idea to add Christmas reading into my goals next year. I could have fun with that!

      1. I decided to make Christmas books a goal, like the 25 days of Christmas=25 books. I went over to Good reads to see how many I’ve already read this year because I’ve been reading them since January and all through the humid 100 degree summer days too. I could not believe it, when I counted them up I’ve read 57 Christmas books and have 16 more on my TBR list. Apparently, I read Christmas books the way you read cozy mysteries, who knew?

I have some old favorite Christmas books I thought to reread, and I may still do that. Now I’m paying attention to what my overall percentage for Christmas will be 🙂 #goals

Btw: our old friend Sherida Stewart has her first book coming out Oct. 8th, Healing Hearts, super happy for her. It’s only ebook for now but that might change. 6. 3)Keep up with favorite author/series

The Queen’s Cook by Tessa Afshar

I appreciate all the time and effort that goes into RC week and all you do to promote Christian fiction! A round of applause for our favorite blogger Kav! Thank you so much for stocking up the TBR list! tracey14567 at gmail dot com

  7. I know I’ve said this at least a million times 😂…..BUT I don’t normally set goals in reading. It’s just too hard to keep up with so many new releases & then there’s the hundreds of books I already have (which glare at me constantly 😂)….

Anywhooo…I have come up with at least one goal of keeping up with a series I’ve started, here are three books that will help with that:

The Seaside Homecoming by Julie Klassen (December)

I just got done reading “A Winter by the Sea”, which had been languishing on my shelf for quite a while. I wish she would release her books faster instead of one a year, especially the series ones 😂😂 It’s SO hard to wait for the next one!!

  8. The second book that will help me keep current with a series is:

Specters in the Glass House by Jaime Jo Wright (October)

She’s one very fantastically awesome writer whose books I’ve surprisingly kept up on. Even though I can only read them in the daylight 😂😂 And that cover for the new book….it’s amazing!!!

  9. The last (but certainly not least) book that will help my goal is:

The Gentleman’s Confession by Anneka Walker (October)

I really love her Regency fiction, something about her writing is almost magical! 💖 And this series has been nothing but amazing. 😊

P.S. Talking about “goals”, I’ve actually done rather well with my goal of reading my physical books this year! I haven’t kept track of the exact number, but I’d estimate at least 20 came off my shelf. I know that’s probably not a big number to some readers, but to me, it’s huge! I’m continuing this throughout the rest of the year & beyond because I have a LOT of books on my shelves. One good thing, once I read them, I pass them onto my sis-in-law. She’s always giddy for a whole bag full of books! 😊💖

    1. That’s fantastic, Trixi! Love that you ‘read your shelf’ this year. I really don’t have a huge unread TBR in my house — well, sometimes my library stack can get unwieldy. I tend to collect and consume as I go. Mind you, I’m not close to any second hand stores that offer a good Christian Fiction selection so that’s probably why. If I did, I’l likely need a ton of more bookcases! Good luck, Trixi!

    1. And what would a Reader’s Choice Week be without a Tamara Leigh selection from Elly? 🙂 I like the idea of concentrating on ‘next in series’ as a goal. This year picked 24 to start, 24 to make progress on and 24 to keep up to date so I’ve been randomly picking books and, frankly, starting way, way, waaaaayyy more than just 24 so some series are languishing unfinished. I might have to modify my goal for next year. Good luck, Elly!

  10. I just got my WIFI & electricity back on. Lotsa rain & heavy winds, but no flooding in our area, thank God!

Kav, I’m always so impressed with your charts! You are amazing & so organized! My goals for 2024 have been mostly to read more new & debut authors, & diversity. Here’s a little list of them I have read: Shirley Gould (new author) (diversity) Africa
Kim Cash Tate (New to me author & diversity)
Barbara Ketchum (New to me & debut author)
Ellen E Withers (new to me author)
Kristen H. Parnell (new suspense author) & Latisha Sexton (new author) There’s more like Robin Jones Gunn that I’ve read for the 1st time. In keeping with my goals of diversity & new author…

    1. I’m glad you have your electricity back up and running. I’ve been praying for all our friends in this storm’s path. Jackie Smith’s power was still out as of 11:30. 4 million without power at last count. Let’s hope and pray they get a lot of it going today. It’s too hot down South to do without a/c for very long.

      1. Thanks, Tracey! Thankfully we slept through most of the heavy winds & rains. Yes, we need to continue to pray for those who don’t have power & also sustained heavy damages! 🙏

    2. First of all — so glad you have electricity back up. It appears that so many don’t at this point and they are saying it might be out for quite a while. And Jackie’s without power?! That storm really covered a large area.

And in the midst of howling winds and torrential rain you still show up here with a bevy of new-to-me author names that I’m excited to look into….but not until Reader’s Choice Week is but a fleeting memory. 🙂

      1. I saw Jackie’s great news below, but Anne Payne, Rachel, my niece, & 1000s of others are still w/o power. So sad, but so thankful at the same time ours came back on in a timely manner. I’m sure I forgot to list a few new to me authors, but those are some I read that were exceptional IMO!

You’re welcome for all the bookish fellowship! I want you to know this is the 1st place I headed when I got my internet back! 😂

  11. I’ve read all of this author’s books except her earlier LI books & would love to continue!

    3) Meddling with Mistletoe by Liz Johnson

Thanks so much for all your hard work in putting this fun, bookish week together, Kav! It’s always a joy adding to our TBRs!

    1. I discovered Liz Johnson because of her Love Inspired Suspense novels, they were so good! And then The Red Door Inn happened. Happy sigh. Good luck, Diane, and thank you for all the bookish fellowship!

  12. Great, clarity at a glance graphics! It is always fun to see your recap and read others’ comments! I read 29 books this past quarter, mostly historical fiction with some contemporary, a memoir, and a history. There were 4 books I DNF. Thank you so much for the always informative and enjoyable RCW!

A basic goal is to add more books to series on my keeper shelf. A Hope Undaunted by Julie Lessman.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I didn’t mention how many books I DNFed so far this year — 16. Julie Lessman is a blast from the past. I haven’t read anything more recent by her, just discovered that she is still writing. Good luck, CC!

  13. 2 of 3 – I need to fulfill a reading challenge with a book that includes pirates. Across the Ages by Gabrielle Meyer is my hope because this would be way, way out of my comfort zone otherwise!

    Thanks so much, Kav.
