June New Releases Giveaway

It’s a Best Reads blog tradition! Celebrating the month’s new releases the first week of each month.

Because I recently discovered that a book’s success or failure is often determined by first month sales! (Though I bet preorders play into that as well.) Publishing houses look at those stats to determine whether they’ll add on to a series or accept the author’s next manuscript! All that literary goodness hanging in the balance but for a month’s worth of sales! (This was a cozy mystery author, but I imagine all traditional publishers use the same ‘system’.) So, I thought I should do my wee little bit to promote Christian Fiction.

By hosting a special “Hello — insert month” giveaway. It’s easy to play along. You just have to choose ONE of the June 2024 new releases on your TBR wishlist (must be Christian Fiction) and mention the title in a comment below (or email me at kavluvstoread AT yahoo DOT ca.) If your name is drawn, that May release is the book you will win and we’re one book count closer to keeping our fave authors in business.

      1. I gave up trying to keep up with her. I wish I could but I wouldn’t be able to read anything else! She’s amazing!

  1. There are some books that look good. First up is Running on Empty by Jill Williamson I haven’t read anything by her before. Sounds good!

  2. It’s June already, May flew by! Hard to believe but here we are looking at 88 degrees today!

The book I’m most looking forward to this month is Born of Gilded Mountains by Amanda Dykes releasing June 18th. I love the ethereal starry night cover. I need a good historical too. 🙂

Thanks for the giveaway Kav! tracey14567 at gmail dot com

    1. Ack — our temps up here are higher than yours! 98 today…my poor plants and seedlings are so confused. Things blooming and fading all in a day. How on earth do you Southerners garden?! Hopefully the weather is going to break tomorrow.

Amanda Dykes is such an amazing storyteller. I’m looking forward to that one as well. Good luck, Tracey!

      1. My husband is the gardener in our family, I just reap all the benefits of it. We’ve already eating peaches from our tree. His favorite thing to grow is tomatoes, but we also have cucumber and peppers. Figs and pears later in the summer.

      2. I’m trying one pepper plant this year. Haven’t had any success with them for some strange reason so I gave up but I couldn’t resist giving it a try. So far so good. And my tomatoes are definitely loving the head. My poor peas are shellshocked though and I haven’t had any beans sprout up which is so strange. Such is the life of a gardener. I feel for a farmers though who are geared for growing in a very different climate. Fresh peaches from your own tree? Gardener envy! They don’t usually come into season here until August but with this weather, who knows?!

      3. The peaches in Va. don’t usually come in until August either, but this is some kind of early variety we planted a lot of years ago. It went dormant for a few years and didn’t produce, my husband wanted to cut it down, but I said no, I liked the bark on it, haha. Then last year it started up again, who knew? And they are so sweet, nothing beats fresh fruit and vegetables!

  3. Hello June. Where did May fly off to? And good morning, Kav! I’m hoping this book will be just as good as ‘The Thing About Home’. It’ll help with my diversity goals also which aren’t going as well as I’d hoped yet this year. 😕

Bitter and Sweet by Rhonda McKnight (Jun 11)

Thanks for the opportunity to win this, Kav!

      1. Ooh, awesome! Anxious to hear your opinion. Unless I win a copy, then I can form my own! LOL! I have a question for you that I’ve been curious about for a long time. I start reading a book on my Kindle & then when I’m busy w/ housework I listen to it. But I can never listen at the beginning of the book bc I have to learn the characters’ names & storyline 1st. I can’t grasp the characters’ names by listening to it. I get confused with who’s who. Especially if it’s a dual-timeline. You don’t have that problem? I’m guessing not. 😕

      2. Question back at you — are you listening to a human narration or an AI narration? ‘Cause I think that might make a difference. I usually don’t have any trouble keeping characters straight at the beginning of a story but I think that’s because the narrators do such a great job of creating distinctive voices for each character which helps.

I’ll admit that sometimes a cozy mystery that does a lot of character dumping in the first few chapters (they need a nice collection of suspects!) can throw me a bit. If I get the feeling it might become a problem, I just bookmark a place so I can return to it if I need to refresh my memory. Usually, everybody gets sorted in my mind by the third chapter or so though so I rarely have to turn back.

I will say that dual timeline stories that don’t keep to a chronological order are difficult for me to follow. I can think of two Kristy Cambron books that about drove me crazy because the dates bounced around so much out of order from the perspective of multiple characters. Definitely think I’ll be reading her books in print from now on!

      3. It’s a computerized voice. When I buy a book on Amazon I can add a human narrator for an extra fee, but since I already have the text-to-speech option on my Kindle I never do. E-books are expensive enough (usually) without an extra charge to listen to them. I wondered how well audiobooks work on a dual-timeline. I don’t think I’ve ever used the text-to-speech option on one. That would be so difficult if like you say, they are not in chronological order or there are a lot of characters introduced all at once!

    1. This one isn’t Christian Fiction, Lori. I haven’t heard of this author so I listened to some samples of his books on audible. Definitely a bit of an edge to them — mild language, some innuendo — so not a fit for this giveaway. Feel free to choose something else.

  9. I’ve been highly anticipating the next installment of Mary Connealy’s series! It’s why I like to wait until all books are out in a series because I hate waiting so long between books, lol 😂😂 My choice for “Hello June” is:

Toward the Dawn by Mary Connealy

  10. The Hudson Collection by Jocelyn Green… I have the first book in the series but haven’t read it yet.

This June has started out a bit wet for us! My husband was wanting to get the yard mowed, but it looks like it is going to have to wait until at least Friday,

  11. Hello June and crazy warmer and wetter weather! Enjoyed the book and gardening comments as I scrolled down the page! Toward the Dawn by Mary Connealy, as I thought the series really got off to an interesting start with the first one.

      1. That’s how she published The Orchard House Bed & Breakfast series, so maybe she’s doing this going forward? I’m not sure, but it does make it difficult for a library request. They really don’t cater much to indies here. I think she was with Tyndale House because I have one Tyndale House title available w/ their Reader Rewards points (which are awesome and not based on purchases alone). Let me know if anyone wants an invite to the rewards program, it’s easy & well worth it).

      2. I guess there’s more creative freedom when you indie publish and since she has traditionally published experience as a foundation, I guess it’s a logical next step. My library doesn’t always get indie books either. I thought it was a Canadian thing but maybe not. I did recently learn that if an indie author puts their book on Kindle Unlimited, they can’t make it available anywhere else. It has to be Amazon exclusive. So likely that’s why libraries aren’t stocking a lot of them — they don’t have the rights. I’m thinking Tyndale Reader Reward points are a US thing? Yeah, I just checked. The cost of buying a book from them including shipping and exchange rate would cancel out any point benefits for me. But a great opportunity for US readers.

      3. I’m sorry the Reader Rewards don’t apply to Canada. I don’t often buy books there but the points are available for small activities that I frequently participate in. I guess it’s great for US readers.😞
