In two world wars, intelligence and counterintelligence, prejudice, and self-sacrifice collide across two generations.
In 1942, Evie Farrow is used to life on Ocracoke Island, where every day is the same — until the German U-boats haunting their waters begin to wreak havoc. And when special agent Sterling Bertrand is washed ashore at Evie’s inn, her life is turned upside down. While Sterling’s injuries keep him inn-bound for weeks, making him even more anxious about the SS officer he’s tracking, he becomes increasingly intrigued by Evie, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own.
Decades earlier, in 1914, Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives at the Ocracoke Inn for the summer, never expecting to fall in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper’s daughter. But when war breaks out in Europe, their relationship is put in jeopardy and may not survive what lies ahead for them.
As the ripples from the Great War rock Evie and Sterling’s lives in World War II, it seems yesterday’s tides may sweep them all into danger again today.
My Review:
I have no words. Seriously speechless but heart-filled and gobsmacked and wondering what I’m going to do now that this book is over. Yesterday’s Tides (such an apt title — love when a story and title are a perfect match!) is the kind of read that you want to linger over and rush through all at the same time. I mean, I didn’t want it to end but I couldn’t wait to get to the ending!
I love Roseanna M. White’s books, but this might just be her best yet. And such a thrill to encounter some fave characters from previous series in this one! Though, no worries if you haven’t met them, it will totally make sense anyway — just gave me an extra thrill of bibliophile bliss!
And — squeeeeaaaalllll — this is a dual timeline story set in two historical eras. And the way past and ‘present’ mesh together is breathtakingly beautiful and filled with some unique twists. Two heroines. Two heroes. Two world wars. The clash of conflict over race and class. (Gah, but I was spitting-nails-furious in places!) Absolutely stunning. And unputdownable.
I listened to the audible edition expertly narrated by Pilar Witherspoon. Her performance kept me riveted through to the very last world.

I was drawn to Yesterday’s Tides because it featured Ocracoke Island, only a 2 hour car ride and 45 minute ferry ride away. There’s so much more to this book than just the Island though! Good and bad. As I mentioned to you, there were times I wanted to throw the book across the room, but since I was reading on my kindle I controlled myself, lol. I’m curious if you had a favorite hero, Rem or Sterling?

I thought of you when I was reading this book. Your part of the world sounds so beautiful! So, did the wanting to throw the book across the room thing mess with your enjoyment of the story? Sometimes I like to get into the ‘love-to-hate’ groove in my fiction and that one character was certainly worth some heavy duty book throwing. (I’m speaking figuratively, of course.)
Really? You want me to choose between two heroes? I don’t know if I can…both suited their time and story perfectly. Both were flawed, both had strength, both wooed their girl in their own way. Maybe Sterling edges up a bit but that’s because of the ending….so….How about you?

Lol, I was hoping to figure out your “type”, if you leaned more towards the alpha-guy of the beta-guy. Of course you are right, they were both perfect for their time period. I agree about the ending giving Sterling a bit of an edge since his timeline finished last. But you know, I think the 2 ladies were super strong and so admirable, the guys had nothing on them!
It was a good story, but as you know, that villain has now topped my list for the vilest, worst character ever written, haha. Now that it’s over, my blood pressure has returned to normal, whew!

Bwahaha! Perhaps the book should have a health warning attached. And readers should have something soft at hand when the furious urge to throw comes upon them…only not a teddy bears…they are for comfort not throwing! π

Might be her best yet? That is a compelling reason to read this story! She has always been a favorite of mine, particularly since I so appreciate very well researched historical fiction. I think many don’t realize the issues we had with German U-boats off the Atlantic coast and, also, the Gulf. My parents and grandparents used to talk about the first year of the war and that folks were very apprehensive as things weren’t going well at all, anywhere. Thanks!

I had no idea that German U-Boats and spies was a thing in North America during the war. So far away from the fighting and such a lot of expense and manpower — seemed like a poor use of resources, but then I’m not an evil mastermind bent on taking over the world. Bwahahaha! Good luck, CC!

I loved Roseanna’s Codebreaker series! I know she is pretty prolific, but I’ve only read maybe five or six, but all excellent.
And it’s set in North Carolina, my neighboring state.
